    Efficiency Analysis of Project Management Offices for Large-scale Information System Projects: Insights for Construction Megaprojects

    In this study, the efficiencies of Project Management Offices (PMOs) in large-scale information system (IS) projects are addressed by using data envelopment analysis. Moreover, the potential improvement levels for each input and output factors of inefficient PMOs are examined. The effects of performance levels of PMO functions on project outcomes with respect to efficiency levels are also analyzed. A total of forty-nine PMOs are analyzed for this study. The result shows that twenty-four PMOs are found to be efficient. As a result of analyzing the impact of efficiency on project performance depending on the functional levels of PMOs, those groups with a high degree of efficiency show higher outcomes compared with the groups with a low degree of efficiency regardless of the functional levels of PMOs. Furthermore, the gap in outcome between the groups with a high degree of efficiency and the groups with a low degree of efficiency is maintained at almost the same level, regardless of the functional levels of PMOs, with the exception of the case of practice management. This indicates that even those groups with a low degree of efficiency could expect high outcomes in terms of schedule and cost compliance if their level of practice management is high

    Treadmill Exercise Alleviates Aging-induced Apoptosis in Rat Cardiac Myocytes

    SummaryBackgroundThe incidence and prevalence of heart failure increases with age. Cardiomyocyte apoptosis contributes to the pathogenesis of heart failure. In the end-stage of human heart failure, increased cardiomyocyte apoptosis is observed. Exercise training is one of the nonpharmacological treatments for chronic heart failure.MethodsIn the present study, we investigated the effect of treadmill exercise on the aging-induced apoptosis within cardiac myocytes in relation to the expression of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) using rats. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) staining and Western blotting for the expression of Bcl-2, Bax, HSP70, and phosphorylated p38 (p-p38) in the cardiac myocardium were conducted.ResultsAging induced apoptosis in the myocardium, which was confirmed by increased TUNEL-positive cells and the enhancement of Bax. Expression of HSP70 was suppressed and p-p38 expression was enhanced by aging. Treadmill exercise alleviated aging-induced apoptosis with enhancing HSP70 expression and suppressing p-p38 expression in the cardiac myocytes.ConclusionBased on the present results, it can be inferred that treadmill exercise can provide a cardioprotective effect on aging-induced apoptosis through the enhancement of HSP70 expression in the heart. Thus, regular exercise may be a useful strategy for preventing heart problems in the elderly

    Context-Preserving Two-Stage Video Domain Translation for Portrait Stylization

    Portrait stylization, which translates a real human face image into an artistically stylized image, has attracted considerable interest and many prior works have shown impressive quality in recent years. However, despite their remarkable performances in the image-level translation tasks, prior methods show unsatisfactory results when they are applied to the video domain. To address the issue, we propose a novel two-stage video translation framework with an objective function which enforces a model to generate a temporally coherent stylized video while preserving context in the source video.     Elastic Modulus of Osteoporotic Mouse Femur Based on Femoral Head Compression Test

    A biomechanical test is a good evaluation method that describes the structural, functional, and pathological differences in the bones, such as osteoporosis and fracture. The tensile test, compression test, and bending test are generally performed to evaluate the elastic modulus of the bone using mice. In particular, the femoral head compression test is mainly used for verifying the osteoporosis change of the femoral neck. This study conducted bone mineral density analysis using in vivo microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) to observe changes in osteoporosis over time. It proposed a method of identifying the elastic modulus of the femur in the normal group (CON group) and the osteoporotic group (OVX group) through finite element analysis based on the femoral head compression test and also conducted a comparative analysis of the results. Through the femoral head compression test, it was verified that the CON group’s ultimate and yield loads were significantly higher than those of the OVX group. It was considered that this result was caused by the fact that the bone mineral density change by osteoporosis occurred in the proximal end more often than in the femur diaphysis. However, the elastic modulus derived from the finite element analysis showed no significant difference between the two groups

    Cognitive impairment in childhood onset epilepsy: up-to-date information about its causes

    Cognitive impairment associated with childhood-onset epilepsy is an important consequence in the developing brain owing to its negative effects on neurodevelopmental and social outcomes. While the cause of cognitive impairment in epilepsy appears to be multifactorial, epilepsy-related factors such as type of epilepsy and underlying etiology, age at onset, frequency of seizures, duration of epilepsy, and its treatment are considered important. In recent studies, antecedent cognitive impairment before the first recognized seizure and microstructural and functional alteration of the brain at onset of epilepsy suggest the presence of a common neurobiological mechanism between epilepsy and cognitive comorbidity. However, the overall impact of cognitive comorbidity in children with epilepsy and the independent contribution of each of these factors to cognitive impairment have not been clearly delineated.
