    Development of an Electromagnetic Actuator for the Hot-Embossing Process

    Hot embossing is in the spotlight due to the development of electronic devices, wearable devices, microfluidic channels, and optical devices. The conventional hot-embossing process creates a pattern on polymer film by using a previously patterned stamp that applied heat and pressure. This method has a disadvantage because it depends on the shape of the patterned stamp. For this reason, this method requires a high cost and a lot of time when replacing the stamp for making a new pattern shape or for modifying the error of the pattern. To solve this problem, the impact print-type hot-embossing method was proposed to create arbitrary patterns, and equipment for this method was assembled. In addition, patterning experiments were conducted to imprint several tens of micrometer-sized patterns in real time. For this method, we proposed an electromagnetic actuator for making the hot-embossing print type and for reducing the size of the actuator compared to previous studies. Through the patterning experiment, we determined that the proposed device could engrave fine dot patterns ranging from 60 µm to 120 µm in diameter. We verified the size of the generated pattern by using a confocal microscope, and we found the proposed hot-embossing technology can realize the desired shape in any position by using the proposed technique. © 2020 by the authors.     Wnt/β-Catenin Signaling Pathway Is Necessary for the Specification but Not the Maintenance of the Mouse Retinal Pigment Epithelium

    β-Catenin (Ctnnb1) has been shown to play critical roles in the development and maintenance of epithelial cells, including the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Ctnnb1 is not only a component of intercellular junctions in the epithelium, it also functions as a transcriptional regulator in the Wnt signaling pathway. To identify which of its functional modalities is critically involved in mouse RPE development and maintenance, we varied Ctnnb1 gene content and activity in mouse RPE lineage cells and tested their impacts on mouse eye development. We found that a Ctnnb1 double mutant (Ctnnb1dm), which exhibits impaired transcriptional activity, could not replace Ctnnb1 in the RPE, whereas Ctnnb1Y654E, which has reduced affinity for the junctions, could do so. Expression of the constitutively active Ctnnb1∆ex3 mutant also suppressed the development of RPE, instead facilitating a ciliary cell fate. However, the post-mitotic or mature RPE was insensitive to the loss, inactivation, or constitutive activation of Ctnnb1. Collectively, our results suggest that Ctnnb1 should be maintained within an optimal range to specify RPE through transcriptional regulation of Wnt target genes in the optic neuroepithelium.</p

    Electroactive Artificial Muscles Based on Functionally Antagonistic Core–Shell Polymer Electrolyte Derived from PS-b-PSS Block Copolymer

    Electroactive ionic soft actuators, a type of artificial muscles containing a polymer electrolyte membrane sandwiched between two electrodes, have been intensively investigated owing to their potential applications to bioinspired soft robotics, wearable electronics, and active biomedical devices. However, the design and synthesis of an efficient polymer electrolyte suitable for ion migration have been major challenges in developing high-performance ionic soft actuators. Herein, a highly bendable ionic soft actuator based on an unprecedented block copolymer is reported, i.e., polystyrene-b-poly(1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium-4-styrenesulfonate) (PS-b-PSS-EMIm), with a functionally antagonistic core–shell architecture that is specifically designed as an ionic exchangeable polymer electrolyte. The corresponding actuator shows exceptionally good actuation performance, with a high displacement of 8.22 mm at an ultralow voltage of 0.5 V, a fast rise time of 5 s, and excellent durability over 14 000 cycles. It is envisaged that the development of this high-performance ionic soft actuator could contribute to the progress toward the realization of the aforementioned applications. Furthermore, the procedure described herein can also be applied for developing novel polymer electrolytes related to solid-state lithium batteries and fuel cells

    Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS) is a system for interpreting and reporting of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of the liver in patients at risk for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). LI-RADS has been developed to address the limitations of prior imaging-based criteria including the lack of established consensus regarding the exact definitions of imaging features, binary categorization (either definite or not definite HCC), and failure to consider non-HCC malignancies. One of the most important goals of LI-RADS is to facilitate clear communication between all the personnel involved in the diagnosis and treatment of HCC, such as radiologists, hepatologists, surgeons, and pathologists. Therefore, clinicians should also be familiar with LI-RADS. This article reviews the LI-RADS diagnostic algorithm, and the definitions and management implications of LI-RADS categories

    Characteristic Impedance Adjustment of Thin-Metal Mesh Transmission Lines for mmWave Display-Integrated Antennas

    This paper proposes four methods and empirical formulas of adjusting characteristic impedances for thin-metal mesh transmission lines. The characteristic impedances are discretely adjusted by changing the number and the size of unit meshes, which provides macro-tuning capability, and the discrete values can be tuned more precisely by varying the thin-metal line width and the aspect ratio of mesh geometry. The validity of proposed methods is confirmed by full-wave numerical simulations, and the simulated impedance variations are well-described by our empirical formulas. For further verifications, 26 distinguished samples of thin-metal mesh transmission lines and a 28-GHz thin-metal mesh antenna are fabricated, and their characteristics are measured in millimeter-wave spectrums. The measured results confirm that the proposed methods and empirical formulas can provide accurate and more flexible design rules for impedance adjustment, which allows potential advances in display-integrated antenna applications

    Analysis of online parenting community posts on expanded newborn screening for metabolic disorders using topic modeling: a quantitative content analysis

    Purpose As more newborns have received expanded newborn screening (NBS) for metabolic disorders, the overall number of false-positive results has increased. The purpose of this study was to explore the psychological impacts experienced by mothers related to the NBS process. Methods An online parenting community in Korea was selected, and questions regarding NBS were collected using web crawling for the period from October 2018 to August 2021. In total, 634 posts were analyzed. The collected unstructured text data were preprocessed, and keyword analysis, topic modeling, and visualization were performed. Results Of 1,057 words extracted from posts, the top keyword based on ‘term frequency-inverse document frequency’ values was “hypothyroidism,” followed by “discharge,” “close examination,” “thyroid-stimulating hormone levels,” and “jaundice.” The top keyword based on the simple frequency of appearance was “XXX hospital,” followed by “close examination,” “discharge,” “breastfeeding,” “hypothyroidism,” and “professor.” As a result of LDA topic modeling, posts related to inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs) were classified into four main themes: “confirmatory tests of IEMs,” “mother and newborn with thyroid function problems,” “retests of IEMs,” and “feeding related to IEMs.” Mothers experienced substantial frustration, stress, and anxiety when they received positive NBS results. Conclusion The online parenting community played an important role in acquiring and sharing information, as well as psychological support related to NBS in newborn mothers. Nurses can use this study’s findings to develop timely and evidence-based information for parents whose children receive positive NBS results to reduce the negative psychological impact

    Assessment of the Prognostic Factors for a Local Recurrence of Rectal Cancer: the Utility of Preoperative MR Imaging

    OBJECTIVE: To determine the utility of MR imaging in evaluating the prognostic factors for a local recurrence of rectal cancer following a curative resection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The preoperative MR images obtained from 17 patients with a local recurrence and 54 patients without a local recurrence, who had undergone a curative resection, were independently evaluated by three radiologists. The following findings were analyzed: the direct invasion of the perirectal fat by the primary rectal carcinoma, involvement of the perirectal lymph nodes, perirectal spiculate nodules, perivascular encasement, and an enlargement of the pelvic wall lymph nodes. The clinical and surgical profiles were obtained from the patients' medical records. The association of a local recurrence with the MR findings and the clinicosurgical variables was statistically evaluated. RESULTS: Of the MR findings, the presence of perivascular encasement (p = 0.001) and perirectal spiculate nodules (p = 0.001) were found to be significant prognostic factors for a local recurrence. Of the clinicosurgical profiles, the presence of a microscopic vascular invasion (p = 0.005) and the involvement of the regional lymph nodes (p = 0.006) were associated with a local recurrence. Logistic regression analysis showed that the presence of perirectal spiculate nodules was an independent predictor of a local recurrence (odds ratio, 7.382; 95% confidence interval, 1.438, 37.889; p = 0.017). CONCLUSION: The presence of perirectal spiculate nodules and perivascular encasement on the preoperative MR images are significant predictors of a local recurrence after curative surgery for a rectal carcinoma. This suggests that preoperative MR imaging can provide useful information to help in the planning of preoperative adjuvant therapy.ope
