    Antiferromagnetic and structural transitions in the superoxide KO2 from first principles: A 2p-electron system with spin-orbital-lattice coupling

    KO2 exhibits concomitant antiferromagnetic (AFM) and structural transitions, both of which originate from the open-shell 2p electrons of O2_{2}^{-} molecules. The structural transition is accompanied by the coherent tilting of O2_{2}^{-} molecular axes. The interplay among the spin-orbital-lattice degrees of freedom in KO2 is investigated by employing the first-principles electronic structure theory and the kinetic-exchange interaction scheme. We have shown that the insulating nature of the high symmetry phase of KO2 at high temperature (T) arises from the combined effect of the spin-orbit coupling and the strong Coulomb correlation of O 2p electrons. In contrast, for the low symmetry phase of KO2 at low T with the tilted O2_{2}^{-} molecular axes, the band gap and the orbital ordering are driven by the combined effects of the crystal-field and the strong Coulomb correlation. We have verified that the emergence of the O 2p ferro-orbital ordering is essential to achieve the observed AFM structure for KO2

    Distribution of Korean Family Names

    The family name distribution in Korea is investigated in comparison with previous studies in other countries. In Korea, both the family name and its birthplace, where the ancestor of the family originated, are commonly used to distinguish one family name from the others. The family name distributions with and without the information of the regional origins are analyzed by using different data sets of various sizes, and compared with previous studies performed in other countries. The growth rate of the family is empirically obtained. Contrary to commonly used assumptions, the growth rate is found to be higher for the smaller family.Comment: 13 pages in one column forma

The patient presented with bilateral painless moving toes and unilateral subclinical sacral (S1) radiculopathy. Bilateral movements with the unilateral lesion, and fluctuation with postural changes and distant muscle contraction suggest that the underlying pathomechanism was a central reorganization in the spinal level

    Mesenchymal stem cells are of great interest, especially in regeneration medicine. Mesenchymal stem cells have the ability to differentiate into several tissues including bone and fat. The stem cells can be obtained from various tissues including bone marrow, periosteum, gingiva, and tooth. Traditionally, two-dimensional culture has been applied for stem cell research. However, more recently, a three-dimensional model has been of great interest for studying the stem cells because it mimics the physiological conditions. Spheroid culture is one way of applying three-dimensional culture. This report describes the two-dimensional culture and spheroid culture and the morphological comparison will be performed between two-dimensional culture and spheroid culture

    The Efficiency of Simultaneous Binaural Ocular Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials: A Comparative Study with Monaural Acoustic Stimulation in Healthy Subjects

    ObjectivesTo evaluate the test-retest reliability and convenience of simultaneous binaural acoustic-evoked ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMP).MethodsThirteen healthy subjects with no history of ear diseases participated in this study. All subjects underwent oVEMP test with both separated monaural acoustic stimulation and simultaneous binaural acoustic stimulation. For evaluating test-retest reliability, three repetitive sessions were performed in each ear for calculating the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for both monaural and binaural tests. We analyzed data from the biphasic n1-p1 complex, such as latency of peak, inter-peak amplitude, and asymmetric ratio of amplitude in both ears. Finally, we checked the total time required to complete each test for evaluating test convenience.ResultsNo significant difference was observed in amplitude and asymmetric ratio in comparison between monaural and binaural oVEMP. However, latency was slightly delayed in binaural oVEMP. In test-retest reliability analysis, binaural oVEMP showed excellent ICC values ranging from 0.68 to 0.98 in latency, asymmetric ratio, and inter-peak amplitude. Additionally, the test time was shorter in binaural than monaural oVEMP.ConclusionoVEMP elicited from binaural acoustic stimulation yields similar satisfactory results as monaural stimulation. Further, excellent test-retest reliability and shorter test time were achieved in binaural than in monaural oVEMP
