Driving in ZZ Ceti stars - Problem solved?
There is a fairly tight correlation between the pulsation periods and
effective temperatures of ZZ Ceti stars (cooler stars have longer periods).
This seems to fit the theoretical picture, where driving occurs in the partial
ionization zone, which lies deeper and deeper within the star as it cools. It
is reasonable to assume that the pulsation periods should be related to the
thermal timescale in the region where driving occurs. As that region sinks
further down below the surface, that thermal timescale increases. Assuming this
connection, the pulsation periods could provide an additional way to determine
effective temperatures, independent of spectroscopy. We explore this idea and
find that in practice, things are not so simple.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Entanglement between two superconducting qubits via interaction with non-classical radiation
We propose a scheme to physically interface superconducting nano-circuits and
quantum optics. We address the transfer of quantum information between systems
having different physical natures and defined in Hilbert spaces of different
dimensions. In particular, we investigate the transfer of the entanglement
initially in a non-classical state of a continuous-variable system to a pair of
superconducting charge qubits. This set-up is able to drive an initially
separable state of the qubits into an almost pure, highly entangled state
suitable for quantum information processing.Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX; revised versio
The Revival of the Unified Dark Energy-Dark Matter Model ?
We consider the generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG) proposal for unification of
dark energy and dark matter and show that it admits an unique decomposition
into dark energy and dark matter components once phantom-like dark energy is
excluded. Within this framework, we study structure formation and show that
difficulties associated to unphysical oscillations or blow-up in the matter
power spectrum can be circumvented. Furthermore, we show that the dominance of
dark energy is related to the time when energy density fluctuations start
deviating from the linear behaviour.Comment: 6 pages, 4 eps figures, Revtex4 style. New References are added. Some

Energies of knot diagrams
We introduce and begin the study of new knot energies defined on knot
diagrams. Physically, they model the internal energy of thin metallic solid
tori squeezed between two parallel planes. Thus the knots considered can
perform the second and third Reidemeister moves, but not the first one. The
energy functionals considered are the sum of two terms, the uniformization term
(which tends to make the curvature of the knot uniform) and the resistance term
(which, in particular, forbids crossing changes). We define an infinite family
of uniformization functionals, depending on an arbitrary smooth function
and study the simplest nontrivial case , obtaining neat normal forms
(corresponding to minima of the functional) by making use of the Gauss
representation of immersed curves, of the phase space of the pendulum, and of
elliptic functions
Magnetic Order and Spin Dynamics in Ferroelectric HoMnO
Hexagonal HoMnO is a frustrated antiferromagnet (T=72 K)
ferroelectric (T=875 K) in which these two order parameters are coupled.
Our neutron measurements of the spin wave dispersion for the S=2 Mn on
the layered triangular lattice are well described by a two-dimensional
nearest-neighbor Heisenberg exchange J=2.44 meV, and an anisotropy that is
0.093 meV above the spin reorientation transition at 40 K, and 0.126 meV below.
For the magnetic structures and phase diagram have been
determined, and reveal additional transitions below 8 K where the
ferroelectrically displaced Ho ions are ordered magnetically.Comment: To be published in Physical Review Letter
A square root of the harmonic oscillator
Allowing for the inclusion of the parity operator, it is possible to
construct an oscillator model whose Hamiltonian admits an EXACT square root,
which is different from the conventional approach based on creation and
annihilation operators. We outline such a model, the method of solution and
some generalizations.Comment: RevTex, 10 pages in preprint form, no figure
