On the nonlinear statistics of range image patches
In [A. B. Lee, K. S. Pedersen, and D. Mumford, Int. J. Comput. Vis., 54 (2003), pp. 83–103], the authors study the distributions of 3 × 3 patches from optical images and from range images. In [G. Carlsson, T. Ishkanov, V. de Silva, and A. Zomorodian, Int. J. Comput. Vis., 76 (2008), pp.
1–12], the authors apply computational topological tools to the data set of optical patches studied by Lee, Pedersen, and Mumford and find geometric structures for high density subsets. One high density subset is called the primary circle and essentially consists of patches with a line separating a light and a dark region. In this paper, we apply the techniques of Carlsson et al. to range patches.
By enlarging to 5×5 and 7×7 patches, we find core subsets that have the topology of the primary circle, suggesting a stronger connection between optical patches and range patches than was found by Lee, Pedersen, and Mumford

Histamine and Histamine H4 Receptor Promotes Osteoclastogenesis in Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Histamine H4 receptor (H4R) has immune-modulatory and chemotaxic effects in various immune cells. This study aimed to determine the osteoclastogenic role of H4R in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The concentration of histamine in synovial fluid (SF) and sera in patients with RA was measured using ELISA. After RA SF and peripheral blood (PB) CD14+ monocytes were treated with histamine, IL-17, IL-21 and IL-22, and a H4R antagonist (JNJ7777120), the gene expression H4R and RANKL was determined by real-time PCR. Osteoclastogenesis was assessed by counting TRAP-positive multinucleated cells in PB CD14+ monocytes cultured with histamine, Th17 cytokines and JNJ7777120. SF and serum concentration of histamine was higher in RA, compared with osteoarthritis and healthy controls. The expression of H4R was increased in PB monocytes in RA patients. Histamine, IL-6, IL-17, IL-21 and IL-22 induced the expression of H4R in monocytes. Histamine, IL-17, and IL-22 stimulated RANKL expression in RA monocytes and JNJ7777120 reduced the RANKL expression. Histamine and Th17 cytokines induced the osteoclast differentiation from monocytes and JNJ7777120 decreased the osteoclastogenesis. H4R mediates RANKL expression and osteoclast differentiation induced by histamine and Th17 cytokines. The blockage of H4R could be a new therapeutic modality for prevention of bone destruction in RA

The Nonlinear Statistics of High-Contrast Patches in Natural Images
Recently, there has been a great deal of interest in modeling the non-Gaussian structures of natural images. However, despite the many advances in the direction of sparse coding and multi-resolution analysis, the full probability distribution of pixels values in a neighborhood has not yet been described. In this study, we explore the space of data points representing the values of 3 × 3 high-contrast patches from optical and 3D range images. We find that the distribution of data is extremely “sparse” with the majority of the data points concentrated in clusters and non-linear low-dimensional manifolds. Furthermore, a detailed study of probability densities allows us to systematically distinguish between images of different modalities (optical versus range), which otherwise display similar marginal distributions. Our work indicates the importance of studying the full probability distribution of natural images, not just marginals, and the need to understand the intrinsic dimensionality and nature of the data. We believe that object-like structures in the world and the sensor properties of the probing device generate observations that are concentrated along predictable shapes in state space. Our study of natural image statistics accounts for local geometries (such as edges) in natural scenes, but does not impose such strong assumptions on the data as independent components or sparse coding by linear change of bases.Mathematic
Laterally wedged insoles in knee osteoarthritis: do biomechanical effects decline after one month of wear?
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Objective</p> <p>This study aimed to determine whether the effect of laterally wedged insoles on the adduction moment in knee osteoarthritis (OA) declined after one month of wear, and whether higher reported use of insoles was associated with a reduced effect on the adduction moment at one month.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Twenty people with medial compartment OA underwent gait analysis in their own shoes wearing i) no insoles and; ii) insoles wedged laterally 5° in random order. Testing occurred at baseline and after one month of use of the insoles. Participants recorded daily use of insoles in a log-book. Outcomes were the first and second peak external knee adduction moment and the adduction angular impulse, compared across conditions and time with repeated measures general linear models. Correlations were obtained between total insole use and change in gait parameters with used insoles at one month, and change scores were compared between high and low users of insoles using general linear models.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>There was a significant main effect for condition, whereby insoles significantly reduced the adduction moment (all p < 0.001). However there was no significant main effect for time, nor was an interaction effect evident. No significant associations were observed between total insole use and change in gait parameters with used insoles at one month, nor was there a difference in effectiveness of insoles between high and low users of the insoles at this time.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Effects of laterally wedged insoles on the adduction moment do not appear to decline after one month of continuous use, suggesting that significant wedge degradation does not occur over the short-term.</p
The Galaxy Populations of X-Ray Detected, Poor Groups
(Abridged) We determine the quantitative morphology and star formation
properties of galaxies in six nearby X-ray detected, poor groups using
multi-object spectroscopy and wide-field R imaging. We measure structural
parameters for each galaxy by fitting a PSF-convolved, two component model to
their surface brightness profiles. To compare directly the samples, we fade,
smooth, and rebin each galaxy image so that we effectively observe each galaxy
at the same redshift (9000 km/s) and physical resolution (0.87h^(-1) kpc). We
compare results for the groups to a sample of field galaxies. We find that: 1)
Galaxies spanning a wide range in morphological type and luminosity are
well-fit by a de Vaucouleurs bulge with exponential disk profile. 2)
Morphologically classifying these nearby group galaxies by their bulge fraction
(B/T) is fairly robust on average, even when their redshift has increased by up
to a factor of four and the effective resolution of the images is degraded by
up to a factor of five. 3) The fraction of bulge-dominated systems in these
groups is higher than in the field (~50% vs. ~20%). 4) The fraction of
bulge-dominated systems in groups decreases with increasing radius, similar to
the morphology-radius (~density) relation observed in galaxy clusters. 5)
Current star formation in group galaxies is correlated with significant
morphological asymmetry for disk-dominated systems (B/T<0.4). 6) The group
galaxies that are most disk-dominated (B/T<0.2) are less star forming and

The parkinsonian mimetic, MPP+, specifically impairs mitochondrial transport in dopamine axons
Impaired axonal transport may play a key role in Parkinson’s disease. To test this notion, a microchamber system was adapted to segregate axons from cell bodies using green fluorescent protein-labeled mouse dopamine (DA) neurons. Transport was examined in axons challenged with the DA neurotoxin MPP(+). MPP(+) rapidly reduced overall mitochondrial motility in DA axons; among motile mitochondria, anterograde transport was slower yet retrograde transport was increased. Transport effects were specific for DA mitochondria, which were smaller and transported more slowly than their non-DA counterparts. MPP(+) did not affect synaptophysin-tagged vesicles or any other measureable moving particle. Toxin effects on DA mitochondria were not dependent upon ATP, calcium, free radical species, JNK, or caspase3/PKC pathways but were completely blocked by the thiol-anti-oxidant N-acetyl-cysteine or membrane-permeable glutathione. Since these drugs also rescued processes from degeneration, these findings emphasize the need to develop therapeutics aimed at axons as well as cell bodies to preserve “normal” circuitry and function as long as possible
{BOAO Photometric Survey of Galactic Open Clusters. II. Physical Parameters of 12 Open Clusters
We have initiated a long-term project, the BOAO photometric survey of open
clusters, to enlarge our understanding of galactic structure using UBVI CCD
photometry of open clusters which have been little studied before. This is the
second paper of the project in which we present the photometry of 12 open
clusters. We have determined the cluster parameters by fitting the Padova
isochrones to the color-magnitude diagrams of the clusters. All the clusters
except for Be 0 and NGC 1348 are found to be intermediate-age to old (0.2 - 4.0
Gyrs) open clusters with a mean metallicity of [Fe/H] = 0.0.Comment: 11 page
