The Width Difference of BdB_d Mesons

    Get PDF
We estimate \dg/\Gamma_d, including 1/mb1/m_b contributions and part of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections. We find that adding the latter corrections decreases the value of \dg/\Gamma_d computed at the leading order by a factor of almost 2. We also show that under certain conditions an upper bound on the value of \dg/\Gamma_d in the presence of new physics can be derived. With the high statistics and accurate time resolution of the upcoming LHC experiment, the measurement of \dg seems to be possible. This measurement would be important for an accurate measurement of sin(2β)\sin(2\beta) at the LHC. In addition, we point out the possibility that the measurement of the width difference leads to a clear signal for new physics.Comment: 5 pages, latex. AbstractRetroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) is a rare disease characterized by the presence of fibroinflammatory tissue around the abdominal aorta and ureteral entrapment in most cases. Idiopathic RPF is frequently reported in association with autoimmune diseases; however, there have been few reports of idiopathic RPF associated with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Here, we report a case of idiopathic RPF with Hashimoto's thyroiditis in a patient with a single functioning kidney, which was successfully treated by corticosteroid therapy and transient intraureteral stent insertion with a double-J catheter

Silver nanoparticles modify VEGF signaling pathway and mucus hypersecretion in allergic airway inflammation

    Get PDF
The anti-inflammatory action of silver nanoparticles (NPs) has been reported in a murine model of asthma in a previous study. But more specific mechanisms of silver NPs in an attenuation of allergic airway inflammation have not yet been established. Vascular and mucous changes are believed to contribute largely in pathophysiology in asthma. Among various factors related to vascular changes, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays a pivotal role in vascular changes in asthma. Mucin proteins MUC5AC and MUC5B have been implicated as markers of goblet cell metaplasia in lung pathologies. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of silver NPs on VEGF signaling pathways and mucus hypersecretion. Ovalbumin (OVA)-inhaled female BALBc mice were used to evaluate the role of silver NPs and the related molecular mechanisms in allergic airway disease. In this study, with an OVA-induced murine model of allergic airway disease, it was found that the increased levels of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α, VEGF, phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase (PI3K) and phosphorylated-Akt levels, and mucous glycoprotein expression (Muc5ac) in lung tissues were substantially decreased by the administration of silver NPs. In summary, silver NPs substantially suppressed mucus hypersecretion and PI3K/HIF-1α/VEGF signaling pathway in an allergic airway inflammation

Microbial community and metabolomic comparison of irritable bowel syndrome faeces

Human health relies on the composition of microbiota in an individual’s gut and the synthesized metabolites that may alter the gut environment. Gut microbiota and faecal metabolites are involved in several gastrointestinal diseases. In this study, 16S rRNA-specific denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and quantitative PCR analysis showed that the mean similarity of total bacteria was significantly different (P<0.001) in faecal samples from patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS; n = 11) and from non-IBS (nIBS) patients (n = 8). IBS subjects had a significantly higher diversity of total bacteria, as measured by the Shannon index (H′) (3.36<H′<4.37, P = 0.004), Bacteroidetes and lactobacilli; however, less diversity was observed for Bifidobacter (1.7< H′<3.08, P<0.05) and Clostridium coccoides (0.9< H′<2.98, P = 0.007). In this study, no significant difference was found in total bacterial quantity (P>0.05). GC/MS-based multivariate analysis delineated the faecal metabolites of IBS from nIBS samples. Elevated levels of amino acids (alanine and pyroglutamic acid) and phenolic compounds (hydroxyphenyl acetate and hydroxyphenyl propionate) were found in IBS. These results were highly correlated with the abundance of lactobacilli and Clostridium, which indicates an altered metabolism rate associated with these gut micro-organisms. A higher diversity of Bacteroidetes and Lactobacillus groups in IBS faecal samples also correlated with the respective total quantity. In addition, these changes altered protein and carbohydrate energy metabolism in the gut

Inha UniversityMODIS LAI product is very important because it has potential for the monitoring of global scale ecosystem, global change of carbon and water. This study aims to analyze the temporal variability of annual MODIS LAI product using field measured LAI dataset for four vegetation types. The MODIS annual LAI pattern shows the high variety or inaccuracy of LAI during rainy season over South Korea. This phenomenon is caused by high cloud coverage and fails of processing by a radiative transfer model in this rainy season. Annual LAI pattern estimated by a radiative transfer model has least variance of LAI values during this time. In coniferous forest, MODIS annual LAI pattern shows the abnormal decreasing of LAI during nongrowing season comparing with field-measured LAI. This decrease of LAI being an inaccurate phenomenon is caused by rather higher cloud coverage and decreasing of understory plants. MODIS LAI product in deciduous and grass coverage is underestimated by comparing with field-measured LAI. In rice paddy, MODIS LAI shows longer growing season than field measured LAI. For the accurate analysis of temporal MODIS LAI product, it needs considering of vegetation coverage types, cloud coverage, and algorithm types of MODIS LAI. © 2005 IEEE.Project Number 14404021, Peport of Research Project ; Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research(B)(2), from April 2002 to March 2006, Edited by Muramoto,Ken-ichiroKamata, NaotoKawanishi, TakuyaKubo, MamoruLiu, JiyuanLee, Kyu-Sung ,

Prevalence of human papillomavirus infection and genotype distribution among high-risk Korean women for prospecting the strategy of vaccine development

    Get PDF
We investigated the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and the distribution of high-risk HPV genotypes among 2,308 high-risk Korean women to predict how much the current prophylactic HPV vaccines might affect the prevention of cervical cancer in Korea. HPV DNA was detected in 939 women (40.7%) but only one-third of women were positive for HPV-16 and/or HPV-18, the genotypes used for developing the HPV vaccines. Thus, the development of area-specific HPV vaccines based on dominant HPV genotypes in our country is needed for preventing HPV infection and the development of premalignant lesions in the cervix of Korean women

BackgroundFood exchange lists are one of the main methods of nutritional education. However, Korean food exchange lists have not been revised since 1994. Therefore, we surveyed the opinions of diabetes educators and patients with diabetes regarding the need for revision of the current food exchange lists.MethodsFor two weeks beginning on 10 March 2008, a 12-item questionnaire regarding the opinion and need for revision of the current food exchange lists was e-mailed to diabetes educators nationwide. Another 15-question survey was administered to patients with diabetes in 13 hospitals located in the Seoul and Gyeonggi regions of Korea.ResultsWe obtained survey responses from 101 diabetes educators and 209 patients; 65 (64.3%) of the educators answered that the current food exchange lists should be revised. The items that needed revision were the glycemic index, addition of new foods and reaffirmation of exchange standard amounts. The patients demanded specific education about choosing appropriate foods, a balanced meal plan, proper snacks, and dining intake.ConclusionOur survey results demonstrate the need to revise the Korean food exchange lists. This process should focus on glycemic index, the addition of new foods and reconfirmation of one exchange reference unit
