    Multimode optical fiber specklegram smart bed sensor array

    Significance: Monitoring the movement and vital signs of patients in hospitals and other healthcare environments is a significant burden on healthcare staff. Early warning systems using smart bed sensors hold promise to relieve this burden and improve patient outcomes.We propose a scalable and cost-effective optical fiber sensor array that can be embedded into a mattress to detect movement, both sensitively and spatially. Aim: Proof-of-concept demonstration that a multimode optical fiber (MMF) specklegram sensor array can be used to detect and image movement on a bed. Approach: Seven MMFs are attached to the upper surface of a mattress such that they cross in a 3 × 4 array. The specklegram output is monitored using a single laser and single camera and movement on the fibers is monitored by calculating a rolling zero-normalized cross-correlation. A 3 × 4 image is formed by comparing the signal at each crossing point between two fibers. Results: The MMF sensor array can detect and image movement on a bed, including getting on and off the bed, rolling on the bed, and breathing. Conclusions: The sensor array shows a high sensitivity to movement, which can be used for monitoring physiological parameters and patient movement for potential applications in healthcare settings.Stephen C.     Common and low frequency variants in MERTK are independently associated with multiple sclerosis susceptibility with discordant association dependent upon HLA-DRB1*15:01 status

    Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. The risk of developing MS is strongly influenced by genetic predisposition, and over 100 loci have been established as associated with susceptibility. However, the biologically relevant variants underlying disease risk have not been defined for the vast majority of these loci, limiting the power of these genetic studies to define new avenues of research for the development of MS therapeutics. It is therefore crucial that candidate MS susceptibility loci are carefully investigated to identify the biological mechanism linking genetic polymorphism at a given gene to the increased chance of developing MS. MERTK has been established as an MS susceptibility gene and is part of a family of receptor tyrosine kinases known to be involved in the pathogenesis of demyelinating disease. In this study we have refined the association of MERTK with MS risk to independent signals from both common and low frequency variants. One of the associated variants was also found to be linked with increased expression of MERTK in monocytes and higher expression of MERTK was associated with either increased or decreased risk of developing MS, dependent upon HLA-DRB1*15:01 status. This discordant association potentially extended beyond MS susceptibility to alterations in disease course in established MS. This study provides clear evidence that distinct polymorphisms within MERTK are associated with MS susceptibility, one of which has the potential to alter MERTK transcription, which in turn can alter both susceptibility and disease course in MS patients

    Onshore carboniferous basins : third review report

    focussed on achieving a better understanding of the Bowland Shale in northern England. The broad aim is to understand the geological variability of the formation from a basin- through to microscale, and assess the impact of variability on hydrocarbon generation, storage and production (for example, the co-incidence or otherwise of factors including organic content and kerogen type; mineralogy; and engineering behaviour). This report is the third summary report describing activities of the consortium, covering the period October 2015 – June 2016. A series of 3 inter-related work packages are designed to improve understanding of the Bowland Shale of northern England. The original numbering of these is retained to allow continuity between previous progress reports. Specifically, these work packages address: 1. Work Package 1,2: Basin analysis of the Pennine Basin; Characterization of shale facies; 2. Work Package 3: Development of chemical stratigraphies through prospective parts of the stratigraphic column; 3. Work Package 4: Hydromechanical behaviour of shales. Two work packages outside the consortium are also considered, namely 4. Retrieval of new materials to test 5. Reprocessing of 3D seismic data to assess rock properties Descriptions of previous activities have been released, covering the period July 2014 to March 2015 (Hough et al., 2015a), and the period April 2015 to September 2015 (Hough et al., 2015b). The consortium currently has 4 sponsors who each contribute £25 000 per year; BGS contributes around £200 000 annually, which results in an annual budget of approximately £300 000. The consortium is planned to last 3 years initially, and started in July 2014 with a scheduled end date of June 2017

    Aesthetic Education in the Early Years: Exploring Familiar and Unfamiliar Personal-Cultural Landscapes

    This article explores a double-bind in early schooling: a persistent value placed upon presenting multicultural art forms to a child constructed as incapable of grasping what is not familiar. The author argues that this bind is situated within dominant developmental discourses that emphasize the appropriateness of concrete and sequential activities and within dominant school art discourses that have constructed early school art as ‘process over product’ and that have understood culture as heritage. Suggesting that all novices — adults and children — make meaning from complex cultural values intertwined with the arts in some similar ways, she presents a description of a personal encounter with a Japanese tea garden and ceremony in order to (a) explore notions of art, development, and school art as cultural sensibilities, and (b) illustrate a cyclical process of direct perception, personal-contextual meaning-making, and discursive analysis. She concludes by arguing that encounters with the unfamiliar present unrealized educative possibilities for aesthetic experience in early schooling and by discussing new directions for an aesthetic early childhood education
