This study aims to clarify the role which the development of the Teaching Games For Understanding(TGFU) Approach of England and Wales in the 1980s took for teachers' development. The results are summarised as follows: (1)The development of the TGFU was organised with the induction course for the improvement of teachers' games teaching. There were some principles of collaborative work among lecturers, PE advisers, and school teachers during the development. (2)Some teachers could understand the games itself deeper and be aware of the significance of the cooperative learning for puplis as they had dialogue with their colleagues about their teaching and reflected on it in the continuous induction course. (3)In order to improve the games teaching, it seems that the task of the rearrangement of the communication between teachers and pupils as well as among pupils should be remained

This study aims to clalify the facts that the implementation of both of the Accreditation of Initial Teacher Training by DES in 1984 and the National Curriculum in 1988 had influence on the time allocation and contens of physical education lessons in primary phase initial teacher training. The results are summarised as follows: (1)In primary phase initial teacher training, the number of time allocation of physical education lessons increased about both of BEd courses and PGCE courses from 1970's to 1980's. (2)In the begining of 1990's, the number of the time allocation of physical education lessons decreased about BEd training courses. That decrease caused by increase of the time allocation of English, mathematics and science. (3)It is seems that the criteria for courses of initial training of primary teachers by CATE in 1993 had undesirable influences on the reform of physical education in primary phase initial teacher training

What and How Should We Teach in Games Teaching of Physical Education Lessons? : Focusing on the 'Teaching For Understanding' approach about games teaching in primary schools

    Get PDF
This study aims to clarify significance and awaiting solution of the 'Teaching For Understanding' approach (Thorpe, R. & Bunker, R. & Almond, L., 1986) about games teaching in primary schools. The following results were obtained: teachers which succeeded in implementing the 'Teaching For Understanding' approach improved their pedagogical understanding and teaching skills as follows: 1) more profound understanding about tactics and strategies peculiar to each game (Smith, M.D.,1991) 2) practice of high qualitative teaching skills (Butler, J.L.,1997) 3) deeper insight into the pupils (Butler, J.L.,1997). If these pupils-centred teaching styles and the aim of the construction of meaning for the pupils should be esteemed, it has to be inquired about 'the context' which is the process of forming the competence to be acquired, appreciated and shaped as a result of interactions with other pupils or a teacher (Almond, L.1997)

(3)It proposed that the school teachers should be trained for getting the skill and the strategy of mentoring

A Study on Objectives and Evaluation of Physical Education in the English & Welsh National Curriculum(1988) -Focusing on the Character of Attainment Targets in the Physical Education Working Group's final Report(1991)-

This study aims to clalify the character of attainment targets of physical education in the English&Welsh National Curriculum(1988).Especially this study focuses on the character of attainment targets in the Physical Education Working Group's Final Report(1991)from the view point of the formative evaluation. The results are summarised as follows: (1)Those attainment targets were composed of three elements that implyed the concept of abiligy to learn. And that program of study was composed of discriptions that implyed the concept of contens and teaching materials. (2)It is seems that three elements of those attainment targets imply features of 'behavioral aspects'. (3)It is seems that the cyclical processes of those attainment targets don't imply the teaching=learning process. So it is seems that criterion-referenced assessment doesn't play a formative part sufficiently
