    Learning to live with the lack: pedagogy of the beguiled

    An important aspect of globalisation/Americanisation is, prima facia, the global export of televisual products such as Sesame Street, Barney, etc. that are explicitly concerned with cultivating elementary forms of organisational life. Thus, it is surprising that organization studies has been virtually silent on childhood and pedagogy. This lacuna needs filling especially because the development of a post-national, cosmopolitan society problematises existing pedagogical models. In this paper we argue that cosmopolitanism requires a pedagogy that is centred on the Lack and the mythic figure of the Trickster. We explore this through an analysis of children’s stories, including Benjamin’s radio broadcasts for children, Sesame Street and Dr Seuss

    Dance-work: Images of organization in Irish dance

    The Irish economic boom, commonly known as the Celtic Tiger, provides an interesting and unique opportunity to explore the relationship between the profound shifts in the organization of working life and in the production and consumption of culture. In this paper, we confine our inquiry into the relationship with one aspect of popular culture, namely dance, focusing on the phenomenon of Riverdance which emerged contemporaneously with the Celtic Tiger. We argue that both are deeply immersed in larger organizing discourses, historical narratives about national identity and civilizing attempts to control the body. We identify three distinct 'moments' in the development of Irish dance, which we label as pre-national, 'Traditional' Ireland; national, 'Modern', Parochial Ireland and global, 'Post-modern' Ireland. This provides a narrative through which we explore the transformation of working relations in Ireland during the 19th and 20th centuries

    Evaluating the holistic costs and benefits of corn production systems in Minnesota, US

    Global agriculture aims to minimize its impacts on environment and human health while maintaining its productivity. This requires a comprehensive understanding of its benefits and costs to ecosystems and society. Here, we apply a new evaluation framework developed by the Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity for Agriculture and Food (TEEBAgriFood) to assess key benefits and costs on the production side of genetically modified (GM) and organic corn systems in Minnesota, USA. The market value of GM corn is 4.5billion,andonly4.5 billion, and only 31.8 million for organic corn using production data and market prices of 2017. GM corn generates revenue of 1488perhectare(at1488 per hectare (at 121 per MT), which is significantly lower than the organic corn at 2793perhectare(at2793 per hectare (at 294 per MT). Using a novel three-stage wellbeing valuation, analysis of the associations between corn production intensity and subjective measures of general health and wellbeing indicates that the total non-financial health cost associated with GM corn is 427.50perhectareor427.50 per hectare or 1.3 billion annually. We also find that the total annual environmental cost associated with GM corn production is 179perhectareor179 per hectare or 557.65 million within Minnesota.     A framework for measuring social value in infrastructure and built environment projects: an industry perspective

    As the infrastructure and built environment sectors shift from traditional economic valuation towards more holistic approaches, projects are being designed, built and evaluated in new ways. An important emerging technique for the economic evaluation of projects is social value measurement. This paper sets out the foundations for the social value measurement techniques that underpin the methods and frameworks developed in central governments and by multilateral and international organisations and describes how these can be adapted to value the broader societal and environmental effects of infrastructure and built environment projects. The paper provides practical evidence of social value measurement in valuing heritage impacts for Stonehenge World Heritage Site as well as presenting a detailed account of the foundations of cost-benefit analysis as a tool for social value measurement and non-market valuation

This paper develops a model of deep institutional innovation at times of historic change such as the present and outlines a research agenda aimed at initiating a holistic assessment of the main foundational institutions in society and re-imagining them in ways that will allow them to fulfill their basic ethical and effectiveness functions. Such a fundamental critique and re-imaging, the paper argues, is essential if global challenges are to be mitigated and resolved

    Drug delivery systems influence the various processes of release, absorption, distribution and elimination of drug. Conventional delivery methods administer drug through the mouth, the skin, transmucosal areas, inhalation or injection. However, one of the current challenges is the lack of effective and targeted oral drug administration. Development of sophisticated strategies, such as micro- and nanotechnology that can integrate the design and synthesis of drug delivery systems in a one-step, scalable process is fundamental in advancing the limitations of conventional processing techniques. Thus, the objective of this thesis is to evaluate novel microencapsulation technologies in the production of size-specific and target-specific drug-loaded particles. The first part of this thesis describes the utility of PDMS and silicon microfluidic flow focusing devices (MFFDs) to produce PLGA-based microparticles. The formation of uniform droplets was dependent on the surface of PDMS remaining hydrophilic. However, the durability of PDMS was limited to no more than 1 hour before wetting of the microchannel walls with dichloromethane and subsequent swelling occurred. Critically, silicon MFFDs revealed very good solvent compatibility and was sufficiently robust to withstand elevated fluid flow rates. Silicon MFFDs facilitated experiments to run over days with continuous use and re-use of the device with a narrower microparticle size distribution, relative to conventional production techniques. The second part of this thesis demonstrates an alternative microencapsulation technology, SmPill® minispheres, to target CsA delivery to the colon. Characterisation of CsA release in vitro and in vivo was performed. By modulating the ethylcellulose:pectin coating thickness, release of CsA in-vivo was more effectively controlled compared to current commercial CsA formulations and demonstrated a linear in-vitro in-vivo relationship. Coated minispheres were shown to limit CsA release in the upper small intestine and enhance localised CsA delivery to the colon
