In this paper, a data assimilation scheme based on the adjoint free Four-Dimensional Variational(4DVar) method is applied to an existing storm surge model of the German North Sea. To avoid the need of an adjoint model, an ensemble-like method to explicitly represent the linear tangent equation is adopted. Results of twin experiments have shown that the method is able to recover the contaminated low dimension model parameters to their true values. The data assimilation scheme was applied to a severe storm surge event which occurred in the North Sea in December 5, 2013. By adjusting wind drag coefficient, the predictive ability of the model increased significantly. Preliminary experiments have shown that an increase in the predictive ability is attained by narrowing the data assimilation time window

The brain of children is less susceptible to brain damage than that of adults. The mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are only insufficiently understood. The interdisciplinary research group consisting of clinicians and basic researches of theoretical Departments investigated the extent and the time course of functional restitution in children after brain damage. Medical and psychological parameters were investigated (prehension, locomotion, a variety of neurological items, spatial memory, psycho-social functions, cognitive functions, etc). The ontogenetic development of these functions was quantitatively studied in subjects with an age from 12 months to 12 years. In cats the neuronal organisation of the investigated motor functions was analysed. The developmental study displayed distinct time related steps for the different functions which can be used as control values in patients after brain damage. The methods in use were effective in measuring deficits of the respective functions in patients and in assessing changes in the post-traumatic course. The study investigating the long-term effects of rehabilitation after brain trauma showed a close correlation between persistent neurological and neuropsychological deficits and the respective data at the beginning of the rehabilitative treatment. Altogether, the investigations have demonstrated that the investigated motor and cognitive functions have rather differentiated developmental time courses and that the methods in use are sensitive enough to record changes in the respective parameters. In the study of hilbertian subspaces of Banach spaces and lower estimates of norms by hilbertian norms, entropy numbers and Gelfand numbers are important tools which were further developed in this research. Some new applications were found, e.g. studying the growth of polynomials in several variables or regularizing general convex bodies or its polars after a few rotations. Some of the results can also be formulated in terms of entropy or Gelfand numbers. A general formula for the entropy numbers of operators between weak type 2 and weak type 2 dual spaces in terms of other s-numbers was found, which yielded a partial positive result on the duality problem for entropy numbers. Studying this duality problem further, it was found that euclidean balls may - in an isomorphic sense - produce a tiling of R"n. Also, entropy numbers and volume estimates for k-codimensional sections of convex bodies are related. Concerning spherical functions, a very precise formula for the rate of best approximation E_k_,_n(f) of continuous functions on the sphere S"n"-"1 by (restrictions of) polynomials of degree k in n variables was shown, estimating E_k_,_n(f) by #omega#(f,n/(n+k)), #omega# the modulus of continuity. The factor n is the best possible, as can be seen by choosing f to be a certain norm restriction.
