Study of Hg vacancies in (Hg,Cd)Te after THM growth and post-growth annealing by positron annihilation

    Get PDF
Positron lifetime measurements have been performed to study vacancy defects in Hg0.78Cd0.22Te. Post-growth annealing under various Hg vapour pressure conditions have been used to create a well-defined number of Hg vacancies. The sensitivity range of the positron annihilation method was found to be 1015 < cHgvac<1018 cm-3. The obtained experience has been used to investigate THM-grown single crystals. The measured longitudinal and radial dependence of the vacancy concentration can be explained by the temperature profile in the grown (Hg,Cd)Te ingots

Structural perfection of Hg1−xCdxTe Grown by THM

The defect structure of single crystals of Hg1-xCdxTe grown by the travelling heater method (THM) has been investigated using X-ray double crystal topography and a chemical etching technique. The structural perfection is found to depend on the ratio of growth and solidus temperature Tg/Ts

Visual Attention to Fake News Flags in Social Media News Posts: An Eye Tracking Study

Given the widespread prevalence of fake news on social media, fake news warnings can play a decisive role in combating misinformation. However, research is still debating the extent to which readers of news on social media heed fake news warnings, which is important to evaluate their effectiveness. In this work, we focus on fake news flags with color gradients from green (verification) to red (warning) and investigate conditions under which they receive visual attention. In an eye tracking experiment, we assigned fake news flags to three social media post elements (user, source, news article) and manipulated the number of fake news flags that indicate a warning or verification. Our results reveal that fake news flags for the news article receive more visual attention than those for the user or source. In addition, we provide evidence that confirmation bias moderates the effect of unique flags (warning or verification) on visual attention

Overcoming challenges for managing IT innovations in non-IT companies

Information technology (IT) impacts almost every business unit inside the enterprise. However, the role of the IT organization as an enabler of growth and driver of business innovation is mostly ignored. In this paper we introduce six non- IT companies which asses IT innovations as important for their strategy and competitive advantage. Four companies already created formalized structures for managing IT innovations. We describe the reasons why companies have chosen to create those structures and which challenges they experienced. Furthermore, we reveal reasons why companies do not create formalized structures, although IT innovations are important for their business. As a result we propose measures how companies can overcome these challenges to manage IT innovations. Approaching these steps will not only lead to successful IT innovations and improved processes, it will also strengthen the perception of the IT organization as an innovative partner

Electronic tuneability of a structurally rigid surface intermetallic and Kondo lattice: CePt5_5 / Pt(111)

    Get PDF
We present an extensive study of structure, composition, electronic and magnetic properties of Ce--Pt surface intermetallic phases on Pt(111) as a function of their thickness. The sequence of structural phases appearing in low energy electron diffraction (LEED) may invariably be attributed to a single underlying intermetallic atomic lattice. Findings from both microscopic and spectroscopic methods, respectively, prove compatible with CePt5_5 formation when their characteristic probing depth is adequately taken into account. The intermetallic film thickness serves as an effective tuning parameter which brings about characteristic variations of the Cerium valence and related properties. Soft x-ray absorption (XAS) and magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) prove well suited to trace the changing Ce valence and to assess relevant aspects of Kondo physics in the CePt5_5 surface intermetallic. We find characteristic Kondo scales of the order of 102^2 K and evidence for considerable magnetic Kondo screening of the local Ce 4f4f moments. CePt5_5/Pt(111) and related systems therefore appear to be promising candidates for further studies of low-dimensional Kondo lattices at surfaces.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figure
