Vector Bundle Moduli Superpotentials in Heterotic Superstrings and M-Theory
The non-perturbative superpotential generated by a heterotic superstring
wrapped once around a genus-zero holomorphic curve is proportional to the
Pfaffian involving the determinant of a Dirac operator on this curve. We show
that the space of zero modes of this Dirac operator is the kernel of a linear
mapping that is dependent on the associated vector bundle moduli. By explicitly
computing the determinant of this map, one can deduce whether or not the
dimension of the space of zero modes vanishes. It is shown that this
information is sufficient to completely determine the Pfaffian and, hence, the
non-perturbative superpotential as explicit holomorphic functions of the vector
bundle moduli. This method is illustrated by a number of non-trivial examples.Comment: 81 pages, LaTeX, corrected typo
Density Perturbations in the Ekpyrotic Scenario
We study the generation of density perturbations in the ekpyrotic scenario
for the early universe, including gravitational backreaction. We expose
interesting subtleties that apply to both inflationary and ekpyrotic models.
Our analysis includes a detailed proposal of how the perturbations generated in
a contracting phase may be matched across a `bounce' to those in an expanding
hot big bang phase. For the physical conditions relevant to the ekpyrotic
scenario, we re-obtain our earlier result of a nearly scale-invariant spectrum
of energy density perturbations. We find that the perturbation amplitude is
typically small, as desired to match observation.Comment: 36 pages, compressed and RevTex file, one postscript figure file.

Spin-orbit mode transfer via a classical analog of quantum teleportation
We translate the quantum teleportation protocol into a sequence of coherent
operations involving three degrees of freedom of a classical laser beam. The
protocol, which we demonstrate experimentally, transfers the polarisation state
of the input beam to the transverse mode of the output beam. The role of
quantum entanglement is played by a non-separable mode describing the path and
transverse degrees of freedom. Our protocol illustrates the possibility of new
optical applications based on this intriguing classical analogue of quantum
entanglement.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figure
Long-wavelength approximation for string cosmology with barotropic perfect fluid
The field equations derived from the low energy string effective action with
a matter tensor describing a perfect fluid with a barotropic equation of state
are solved iteratively using the long-wavelength approximation, i.e. the field
equations are expanded by the number of spatial gradients. In the zero order, a
quasi-isotropic solution is presented and compared with the general solution of
the pure dilaton gravity. Possible cosmological models are analyzed from the
point of view of the pre-big bang scenario. The second order solutions are
found and their growing and decaying parts are studied.Comment: 19 pages, 1 figur
B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia associated with t(8;22)(p11.2q11.2): Role of additional cytogenic anomalies
B lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) may be associated with recurrent cytogenetic and molecular abnormalities. We describe the fourth-known case of B-ALL associated with the t(8;22)(p11.2q11.2) – a translocation seen more frequently in T lymphoblastic leukemia and acute myelogenous leukemia. This patient’s leukemia involves a combination of additional cytogenetic anomalies not yet described in the literature, including del(11)(q13q23), add(9)(p22), and monosomy 7. Given the role in B cell differentiation of genes in the affected regions, including MEN1 (11q13), ATM (11q22), ETS1(11q23), MLL (11q23), AF9 (9p22), and IKZ-F1 (7p12), this case may provide further insight into B cell leukemogenesis associated with the t(8;22). Deletion or mutation of these genes may be critical in targeting the B cell population, and this cytogenetic profile of a B-ALL suggests additional gene targets for diagnostic and therapeutic consideration
Topological phase for spin-orbit transformations on a laser beam
We investigate the topological phase associated with the double connectedness
of the SO(3) representation in terms of maximally entangled states. An
experimental demonstration is provided in the context of polarization and
spatial mode transformations of a laser beam carrying orbital angular momentum.
The topological phase is evidenced through interferometric measurements and a
quantitative relationship between the concurrence and the fringes visibility is
derived. Both the quantum and the classical regimes were investigated.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
