Biological and reproduction characteristics of female big-eye kilka (Clupeonella grimmi) including body weight, fork length, age, gonad development stages, gonad weight, ganado somatic ratio (GSR) were studied. We sampled 808 fish specimens from the Southern Caspian Sea, Babolsar Area during December 2002 to May 2003. Gonad development stages were assessed through tissue sectioning. Results revealed spawning peak to occur in early January. We also measured body weight as 8.88±0.08 grams, fork length as 1.03±0.26 mm, age as 3.610.03 years, gonad development stage as 3.67±0.03, gonad weight as 0.5±0.01 grams and ganado somatic ratio (GSR) as 5.39 ±0.1 in the specimens. Totally, five age classes, dominated by the 4+ years were distinguished while no 1+ year's age class was observed. The abundance of gonad developmental stages 2-5 was 18.19%, 14.60%, 48.89% and 18.32% respectively. Macroscopic (visual) and microscopic (tissue section) observations of oocyte revealed the same results for gonad development

Background: Different drugs with different mechanisms have been used to remove iron overload in thalassemia patients. This study aimed to compare the effects of Nanojade and Deferoxamine in reducing serum ferritin levels. Methods: This randomized clinical trial was conducted on 41 major thalassemia patients. The selected patients were allocated to two groups by the permuted block randomization method. The first group was treated with Deferasirox (Nanojade) and the second group was treated with Deferoxamine (Desferal). All patients received the drugs at 14 mg/kg. Blood samples were collected at baseline, after 3 and 6 months after intervention. Chi-square test, Mann-Whitney U-test, and Friedman test were used for analytical statistics at the significance level of 0.05. Results: 51.9% of patients in the Nanojade group and 40% in the Desferal group were females. Before the intervention, no difference was observed in terms of basic and demographic information. Before the intervention, as well as 3 months, and 6 months after the intervention, none of the blood parameters in the studied groups were significantly different (p> 0.05). The overall mean ferritin levels had a significant decrease, in both groups, 6 months after the intervention (PDeferasirox = 0.001 vs PDeferoxamine = 0.043); However, in the comparison between the two groups, no significant difference was observed between the levels of ferritin and creatinine at any of the time points (p> 0.05). Conclusions: Deferasirox oral tablet (Nanojade®) is as effective as an injectable form (deferoxamine (Desferal®)) in reducing serum ferritin in patients with beta-thalassemia major without causing nephrotoxic effects. Therefore, it can be a suitable alternative to its injectable form

Background: b-thalassemia major is a common hereditary blood disease that can affect patients’ oral health and quality of life. The present study aims to determine the relationship between health of deciduous teeth and the Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) in children diagnosed with β-thalassemia major compared with healthy children. Materials and Methods This cross-sectional study was performed on 50 children diagnosed with β-thalassemia major and 50 healthy children aged 3-6 years old. Decayed, missing, and filled teeth (dmft) of the participants were measured according to the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria and the OHRQoL with the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS). Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 19.0. Results: The results showed that the dmft index of the patient group with a mean of 5.36 was significantly higher than the healthy group with a mean of 3.36. The mean OHRQoL in the patient group (19.24) was significantly higher than that of the healthy group (11.24). The mean dmft had a significant positive relationship with the ECOHIS score of the children with thalassemia major (r=0.769, p=0.000), and healthy children (r=0.756, p=0.000). Conclusion: According the results, the positive correlation between the dmft index and the mean OHRQoL indicated that dental problems in most children with β-thalassemia major are associated with a poorer OHRQoL. Since the dmft index and ECOHIS were higher among children diagnosed with β-thalassemia major, the prevention and treatment of dental problems seem necessary for improving their quality of life

The security is an important aspect in our daily life whichever the system is considered, security plays vital role. The biometric person identification technique based on the pattern of human iris is suitable to be applied to access control and provides strong e-security. Iris recognition is one of important biometric recognition approaches in human identification is very active topic in research and practical application. Iris Recognition System consists of Acquisition, Localization, Feature Extraction and Feature Matching phases. Localization stage includes Normalization and Segmentation phase. Circular Hough Transform is one the best suitable algorithm in segmentation phase, but as a result of having two for-loops in its structure; CHT algorithm consumes high time processing and uses high storage capacity. These drawbacks make it hardly appropriate for real time applications of iris recognition system. To improve time and storage complexity, firstly, a preprocessing of CUHK iris image dataset is done to eliminate unnecessarily regions and secondly, a radius-table is created based on pupil size variation of CUHK iris image dataset. The results show at least 40% efficiency in time complexity and minimum 20% efficiency in storage complexity

This paper presents an artificial neural network (ANN) based scheme for fault identification in power transformer protection. The proposed scheme is featured by the application of ANN to identifying system patterns, the unique choice of harmonics of positive sequence differential currents as ANN inputs, the effective handling of current transformer (CT) saturation with an ANN based approach, and the consideration of tap changer position for correcting secondary CT current. Performance of the proposed scheme is studied for a wide variety of operating conditions using data generated from simulation. The results indicate that the proposed scheme provides a fast and sensitive approach for identifying internal faults and is secure against CT saturation and transformer tap changer operation
