Overcoming challenges in smart phone use among older adults in Saudi Arabia

    Get PDF
This empirical study investigates attitudes about smart phones and their use by senior citizens in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), and develops general design guidelines for a smart phone interface designed to appeal to this group and thus increase the adoption of smart phones among its members. The overall rationale for the study is to enable seniors in Arabic-speaking, predominantly Muslim countries to better access the proven benefits of smart phone use among seniors, including positive impacts on mental functioning, the adoption of healthier lifestyles through improved access to healthcare information and applications, and to support more autonomous and independent living. Many studies have generated best practice guidance on smart phone design for seniors, but these have mostly been conducted in Western, English-speaking countries. This research builds on existing best practice guidance but uses the study findings to prioritize the most important design points relating to the needs of Arabic-speaking users in Muslim countries, and to identify any required additions or modifications to the existing guidance and to current theories of technology adoption. The initial findings of a survey of Saudi Arabian senior citizens were used to develop a prototype smart phone interface, which was evaluated by a sample of participants. The outcomes of this trial and the findings of semi-structured interviews were then used to develop final recommendations for a smart phone application for use by the target population, and for a modified theory of technology adoption

Characteristics of Culturally Inclusive Art Education Pedagogy: A Historical Document Analysis Study

    Get PDF
The objective of this mixed methods historical document analysis is to identify the characteristics of culturally inclusive art education pedagogy. Using the theoretical lenses of intersectionality, critical theory, and socially inclusive pedagogy, this study seeks to determine the reasons for the misapplication of diversity and inclusion in art education. Qualitative and quantitative methods are applied to the historical document analysis of National Art Education Association articles in two major journals: Art Education and Studies in Art Education. The findings indicate that for the last 20 years, 20% of the articles published in Studies in Art Education and 30% of those published in Art Education mentioned diversity in some capacity. The findings indicate that deficit thinking and whiteness within the literature are limited to articles that highlight the need to fight white supremacy in the form of racialized stereotypes and inequality in arts and education because of the selection processes that the researchers followed. The findings also help to formulate a set of recommended characteristics of culturally inclusive art education pedagogy. These characteristics are as follows: 1) critically reflecting on oneā€™s personal characteristics and its impact on oneā€™s view of people who are different from oneself, (2) cultivating a deeper understanding of culture beyond only celebrating physical differences in order to capture deeper nuances and reveal differences in lived experience, (3) reflecting on the cultural framing of references and its effect on the materials displayed or presented in the classroom and the curriculum, and (4) examining and adjusting teaching practices based on both the instructorā€™s and the learnerā€™s points of view. Lastly, this study provides an overview of the history of art education in terms of diversity and inclusion in the curriculum and pedagogy as related to race and ethnicity over the past 20 years (2001ā€“2020). Overall, the findings of this research provide greater insight into the ways in which inclusion and diversity can influence art educatorsā€™ practices

Developing system-based leading indicators for proactive risk management in the chemical processing industry

Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, 2012.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 78-80).The chemical processing industry has faced challenges with achieving improvements in safety performance, and accidents continue to occur. When accidents occur, they usually have a confluence of multiple factors, suggesting that there are underlying complex systemic problems. Moreover, accident investigations often reveal that accidents were preventable and that many of the problems were known prior to those accidents, suggesting that there may have been early warning signs. System-based analysis addresses systemic aspects and leading indicators enable the detection of ineffective controls and degradation of the system. Together, they could enable taking needed actions before an incident or a loss event. To develop process safety indicators, the chemical processing industry currently uses guidelines that are mainly based on the concepts of the "Swiss Cheese Model" and the "Accident Pyramid." The current guidelines lack a systemic approach for developing process safety indicators; the guidelines view indicators as independent measures of the safety of a system (e.g. a failure of a barrier), which can be misleading because it would not identify ineffective controls, such as those associated with the migration of the system towards an unsafe state, or associated with interdependencies between barriers. Moreover, process safety indicators that are currently used in the chemical industry are more focused on lagging as opposed to leading indicators. This main objective of this thesis is to develop a structured system-based method that can assist a hydrocarbon/chemical processing organization in developing system-based process safety leading indicators. Building on developed safety control structures and the associated safety constraints, the proposed method can be used to develop both technical and organizational leading indicators based on the controls, feedbacks, and process models, which, ultimately, can ensure that there is an effective control structure.by Ibrahim A. School Division Policies Related to Suicide Prevention and Response

    Get PDF
Suicide is one of the leading causes of death among youth age 10-19, and is an increasing concern in the wake of COVID-19. K-12 schools are crucial spaces for offering mental health support to students, and can implement policies to help prevent suicidal thoughts and behaviors. This MERC research and policy brief focuses on education policy related to suicide prevention and response. It is structured to answer five questions: 1) What are recent trends in youth suicide? 2) What does research show about school division policies that are effective in suicide prevention and response? 3) What policies in Virginia and the MERC region guide the prevention of suicide in school divisions? 4) What are the key takeaways and recommendations for preventing youth suicide through education policy

Strategies for Addressing Chronic Absenteeism in the Post-Pandemic Era

Although chronic absenteeism has been an enduring concern in PK-12 schools, it has doubled since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. To explore strategies for addressing this issue, this MERC research and policy brief answers five questions: 1) What are trends in chronic absenteeism pre and post-pandemic?, 2) What factors contribute to chronic absenteeism and which student groups are particularly vulnerable? 3) What are the connections between chronic absenteeism and other student outcomes? 4) What strategies are effective in reducing chronic absenteeism?, and 5) What are policies at the state and school board level intended to help address chronic absenteeism? It concludes with key takeaways and recommendations for addressing chronic absenteeism in the post-pandemic era

Addressing School Bullying Since the Onset of COVID-19: A MERC Research and Policy Brief

    Get PDF
Among the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic is a shift in the nature and intensity of school bullying, perhaps symptomatic of the rapid changes and stressors that PK-12 students have endured since 2020. In this MERC research and policy brief, we explore how school bullying has changed since the onset of COVID-19 as well as research-based strategies for how educators and division leaders can best respond to it. The brief answers the following questions: 1) What is the nature of school bullying since the onset of COVID-19? 2) Which students have been particularly impacted by bullying since the pandemic? 3) What are recommended strategies for preventing school bullying since the onset of COVID-19? 4) What are current policies in Virginia and MERC school divisions related to addressing bullying? 5) What are the key takeaways and enduring questions about addressing school bullying since the onset of COVID-19
