A study on the efficiency of the sequential batch reactor on the reduction of wastewater pollution from oil washing
© 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.Industrial pollution discharges from washing fuel oils pose severe problems for the environment, particularly for the marine environment receiving these discharges. This work evaluates the biological treatment performance of wastewater (90 m3/h) rich in organic matter with low biodegradability using a sequential batch reactor (SBR) on a laboratory scale. The test using SBR was carried out for 25 days on a continuous cycle of 24 h (30 min of filling, 17 h of aeration, 4 h of anoxia, 2 h of settling, and 30 min of emptying). The feasibility of alternative sources of microorganisms from urban wastewater. The performance of the batch sequencing reactor was evaluated using turbidity, total suspended solids, chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD), ammonium, nitrate, and phenol as indicators. The results obtained showed that the COD/BOD ratio and the pollutant load vary from one campaign to another. The removal efficiency of COD, BOD, TSS (Total suspended solids), ammonium, nitrate, and phenol varies from 81%, 91%, 72%, 100%, 52%, and 63%. Thus, SBR-type treatment could be an interesting way to reduce pollution due to its simplicity, less space occupation, low energy consumption, and not requiring highly qualified personnel
Optimization of coagulation-flocculation for landfill leachate treatment: An experimental design approach using response surface methodology
The present work aims to optimize the leachate treatment of the Mohammedia-Benslimane landfill by coagulation-flocculation using the central composite design. The independent variables studied were pH, coagulant dose, flocculant dose, and stirring time. The response variables studied were turbidity, COD, and absorbance at a wavelength of 254 nm. The results showed that the optimal pH was 6.87, the optimal coagulant dose was 7.89 g/L, the optimal flocculant dose was 12 ml/L, and the optimal stirring time was 22.8 min. These optimal conditions provided the best results for the responses studied. Indeed, turbidity was reduced by 90.38%, COD was reduced by 85.50%, and absorbance at a wavelength of 254 nm was decreased by 55.53%. The analysis of variance indicated that the established models were significant and that they are characterized by a good fit (R2 in the order of 0.97, 0.96, and 0.94 for turbidity, COD, and UV254, respectively). In conclusion, optimizing landfill leachate treatment by flocculation coagulation using the central composite design within response surface methodology yielded promising results for reducing turbidity, COD, and absorbance at a wavelength of 254 nm. This method can be used to optimize landfill leachate treatment in other settings
Study of the Pollution Generated by Wastewater from the Refining of Vegetable Oils
Abstract: This study concerns the assessment of the pollution generated by three industrial discharges produced by the Lesieur company in Ain Harrouda for the production of vegetable oils, such as process water (PWW), ACID wastewater (AWW), and refining wastewater. (RWW). This wastewater is heavily loaded with pollutants that could pose serious environmental problems. The concentrations of polluting matter in chemical oxygen demand (COD), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), and Total suspended solids (TSS), variable in time, could strongly influence the effectiveness of treatment with sludge currently used by Lesieur. In addition, process wastewater and refining wastewater are loaded with fats and oils with varied concentration between3700 and 6000 mg/l. At the same time, wastewater from leg breaking has a concentration varying between 1000 and 6000 mg/L. Additionally, leg-breaking water has a concentration of Total suspended solids (TSS) varying between 10,000 mg/L and 23,000 mg/L.
In comparison, process wastewater and refining water have concentrations (TSS) ranging between 4500 mg/L and 8000 mg/L, related to turbidity exceeding 10000 NTU. Furthermore, COD fluctuates between 700 and 3,400 mg/L and suspended matter between 500 and 8,000 mg/L with average pollution loads of 114 and 358 kg/day, respectively. Indeed, the COD/BOD5 ratio for process wastewater varies between 3 and 7. On the other hand, for basic wastewater, this ratio varies between 3 and 20, which could be due to the quality of wastewater with high polyphenol content. Indeed, refining wastewater has a COD/BOD5 ratio that varies between 2 and 4, which shows that organic matter is biodegradable compared to other types of wastewater. The phenol concentration varies over time and goes from 20 to 125 mg/L, while the surfactants have a variable concentration of 20 and 127 mg/L over time, then increases during the summer, taking into account the increase in market demand

Performance of simultaneous carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus removal from vegetable oil refining wastewater in an aerobic-anoxic sequencing batch reactor (OA-SBR) system by alternating the cycle times
Carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) pollutants are among the most common environmental contaminants in different types of industrial wastewater, and they are a pollution factor that causes the eutrophication of receiving aquatic systems. An aerobic-anoxic sequencing batch reactor (O/A-SBR) system was studied to enhance the efficiency of vegetable oil refining wastewater treatment (VORW). Reactors were exploited with a total cycle period of 24 h (20 min filling, 17 h aeration, 4 h anoxic, 2 h settling, 20 min draw, and 20 min idle). SBR efficiency was evaluated by measuring pH, turbidity, chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), and nutrients such as nitrate, ammonium, and phosphate. The results showed better performance from the start of operation with COD (83%), BOD5 (94%), turbidity (80%), nitrate (93%), ammonium (96%), and phosphate (91%) removal efficiencies. As industrial wastewater treatment is an important and complicated issue regarding environmental pollution, SBR can provide a better solution. The O/A-SBR system is a promising option that the VOR industry may adopt as a pre-treatment due to its more effective, inexpensive, and simple operation for organic matter and nutrient removal
