    Inflation in Supersymmetric SU(5)

    We analyze the adjoint field inflation in supersymmetric (SUSY) SU(5) model. In minimal SUSY SU(5) hybrid inflation monopoles are produced at the end of inflation. We therefore explore the non-minimal model of inflation based on SUSY SU(5), like shifted hybrid, which provides a natural solution for the monopole problem. We find that the supergravity corrections with non-minimal Kahler potential are crucial to realize the central value of the scalar spectral index n_s ~ 0.96 consistent with the seven year WMAP data. The tensor to scalar ratio r is quite small, taking on values r < 10^{-5}. Due to R-symmetry massless SU(3) octet and SU(2) triplet Higgs bosons are present and could spoil for gauge coupling unification. To keep gauge coupling unification intact, light vector-like particles are added which are expected to be observed at LHC.Comment: 16 page

    Adiabatic passage and ensemble control of quantum systems

    This paper considers population transfer between eigenstates of a finite quantum ladder controlled by a classical electric field. Using an appropriate change of variables, we show that this setting can be set in the framework of adiabatic passage, which is known to facilitate ensemble control of quantum systems. Building on this insight, we present a mathematical proof of robustness for a control protocol -- chirped pulse -- practiced by experimentalists to drive an ensemble of quantum systems from the ground state to the most excited state. We then propose new adiabatic control protocols using a single chirped and amplitude shaped pulse, to robustly perform any permutation of eigenstate populations, on an ensemble of systems with badly known coupling strengths. Such adiabatic control protocols are illustrated by simulations achieving all 24 permutations for a 4-level ladder

    Evaluation Study of Boundary and Depth of the Soil Structure for Geotechnical Site Investigation using MASW

    This study reviews the correlation between the experimental Rayleigh dispersion curve and the Vp &amp; Vs ground model versus depth. Six samples of stations A , B , C , D ,&nbsp; E&nbsp; and&nbsp; F&nbsp; were used in the experiment.The geophone spacing used was set 1 m and total length of each line was 23 m. The result shows positive significance (best fit) of R2 that ranges from 0.80 to 0.90. The fk (frequency-wave number method) dispersion curves analysis confirmed that the soil structure investigated is divided into three zones: (1) Unsaturated soil zone (clay soil), in which the layer is dominated by soil with typically alluvial clayey silt and sand. The Vp ranges from 240 m/s to 255 m/s at a depth of 2 to 8 m. (2) The intermediate zone (stiff soil), in which the layer is dominated by sand, silt, clayey sand, sandy clay and clay of low plasticity. This structure is interpreted as partially saturated soil zone, the soil is typically very dense. It contains soft rock typically fill with cobble, sand, slight gravel and highly weathered at depth of 18 to 30 m with Vp of&nbsp; 255 to 300 m/s. (3) Saturated soil zone at a depth of&nbsp; 8 to 18 m with Vp of 300 to 390 m/s. There is a very good agreement between wave-number (k) and phase velocity (Vw)&nbsp; produced. Both the two parameters shows similar pattern in the topsoil and subsurface layer, which constitute boundary field of soil structure. Moreover, relationship between phase velocity versus wave-length shows best fit of model from inversion with measured value (observed) in&nbsp; implementation of the boundary and depth of each layer

    Evaluation of Global Solar Radiation Estimated from ECMWF-ERA5 and Validation with Measured Data over Egypt

    Solar energy is a big source of renewable energy and, luckily, solar energy is very rich in Egypt and the eastern Mediterranean region.The validation of the global solar radiation from the reanalysis data ECMWF-ERA5 by using the parameters from data elements and to deduce a new model to give a good representation of the GSR distribution when compared with measured data. The estimation of global solar radiation (GSR) distribution over Egyptduring the period time from 2017 to 2019. Evaluated and a comparative assessment of the models was carried out using measured GSR at Helwan (29.82 ᵒN, 31.29ᵒE) and Suez(31ᵒN.32ᵒE) sites are done. Database:The European Center for Middle-Distance Weather Forecast recently released its most complex reanalysis product ERA5 data set (ECMWF). This method has been developed and manufactured, giving it more advantages than ECMWF's previously released ERA-Interim reanalysis products. It has better spatial resolution, can be archived every hour, and uses more advanced assimilation methods and merges more data sources. The results showed that the model could predict the pattern of the measured monthly, daily mean of GSR for the entire period. The correlation coefficient (R) is equal 95% and 97% of GSR for Helwan and Suez respectively.The outputs from our proposed model for monthly global solar radiation distribution over the period of study is given, and  the maximum value 7.5 KWh/m2and the minimum are 3 KWh/m2.The values of RMSE of GSR-ERA5 and GSR-estimated for Helwan and Suez sites are 0.275, 0.446 and 0.2, 0.36 (KWh/m2) respectively. The values of MABE of GSR-ERA5 and GSR-estimated for the two station Helwan and Suez is 0.014, 0.023 and 0.007, 0.03 (KWh/m2) respectively. Finally the proposed model was used to givean indication of theGSR distribution over Egypt

    Diagnostic accuracy of midtrimester antenatal ultrasound for multicystic dysplastic kidneys

    OBJECTIVES: To establish the diagnostic accuracy of obstetric ultrasound at a tertiary fetal medicine centre in the prenatal detection of unilateral and bilateral MCDK in fetuses where this condition was suspected; and to undertake a systematic review of the literature on this topic. METHODS: Retrospective observational study of all cases with an antenatal diagnosis of either unilateral or bilateral MCDK referred to a regional tertiary fetal medicine unit between 1997 and 2015. Postnatal diagnosis was confirmed by postnatal ultrasound reports or postmortem examination. The accuracy for prenatal ultrasound in the diagnosis of MCDK was calculated. We also performed a review of the literature using a systematic search strategy, regarding the prenatal diagnosis and diagnostic accuracy of MCDK. RESULTS: We included 144 women in the analysis; 37 (25.7%) opted for pregnancy termination (due to unilateral MCDK with additional abnormalities, bilateral suspected MCDK or severe obstructive uropathy). In 126 women all pre- and postnatal data were available, including 104 livebirths; 19 who opted for TOP and where PM was available; and 3 that had an intrauterine fetal death. Two infants died shortly after birth, (due to known bilateral MCDK and known cranial vault defect). The overall number of postnatally confirmed MCDK was 100: of these 98 were diagnosed prenatally (true positive), while 2 were thought to be hydronephrosis prenatally (false negative) and the diagnosis of MCDK was made after birth. In 9 cases the initial antenatal diagnosis of suspected MCDK was revised, either later in pregnancy (n = 2) or postnatally (n = 7). The overall diagnostic accuracy of MCDK reported in the existing literature was found to range from 53.3 to 100%. MCDK was isolated in the majority of cases, while in 29% of cases was found to be associated with other renal and extra-renal fetal abnormalities. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that the diagnostic accuracy for the use of antenatal ultrasound to detect postnatal MCDK was about 91% and can therefore be used to guide antenatal counselling. However, prenatal or postnatal revision of the diagnosis occurs in about 7% of cases and parents should be counselled appropriately

    Super resolution of car plate images using generative adversarial networks

    Car plate recognition is used in traffic monitoring and control systems such as intelligent parking lot management, finding stolen vehicles, and automated highway toll. In practice, Low-Resolution (LR) images or videos are widely used in surveillance systems. In low resolution surveillance systems, the car plate text is often illegible. Super-Resolution (SR) techniques can be used to improve the car plate quality by processing a series of LR images into a single High-Resolution (HR) image. Recovering the HR image from a single LR is still an ill-conditioned problem for SR. Previous methods always minimize the mean square loss in order to improve the peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR). However, minimizing the mean square loss leads to overly smoothed reconstructed image. In this paper, Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) based SR is proposed to reconstruct the LR images into HR images. Besides that, perceptual loss is proposed to solve the smoothing issue. The quality of the GAN based SR generated images is compared to existing techniques such as bicubic, nearest and Super-Resolution Convolution Neural Network (SRCNN). The results show that the reconstructed images using GANs based SR achieve better results in term of perceptual quality compared to previous methods

    The aim of this chapter is to investigate how social media help create and diffuse popular music in Saudi Arabia and how such music questions the officially accepted identities and social practices. Social media are widely used as means of promotion among artists around the world; yet Saudi Arabia deserves special attention. This is because traditional media act much more strictly as gatekeepers in the kingdom; hence, social media offer greater possibility for circulation of popular entertainment, especially when it touches upon the questions related to the core values of the Saudi society. Such is the case of recordings by Hesham Fageeh “No woman, No drive” (2013) or the recently trending video clip “Hwages” that, both, received peak visibility online and sparked debates about women empowerment. Similarly, some videos trending online prompted a dance craze, for instance, “Barbs” showed a choreography that was subsequently copied by fans who uploaded their performances online. Dancing is a prohibition among the conservative segments of society; yet, the vastly young population of Saudi Arabia seeks entertainment.Social media in Saudi Arabia have become primordial means of communication in the kingdom with highest rates of social media participation in the Middle East and seventh rank in the world (2016). Consequently, this chapter employs a mixed-method approach in order to uncover how social media breaks the monopoly on entertainment by promoting different musical genres and encouraging social debate

    Targeting Infectious Agents as a Therapeutic Strategy in Alzheimer’s Disease

    Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most prevalent dementia in the world. Its cause(s) are presently largely unknown. The most common explanation for AD, now, is the amyloid cascade hypothesis, which states that the cause of AD is senile plaque forma- tion by the amyloid β peptide, and the formation of neurofibrillary tangles by hyperphosphorylated tau. A second, burgeoning theory by which to explain AD is based on the infection hypothesis. Much experimental and epidemiological data support the involvement of infections in the development of dementia. According to this mechanism, the infection either directly or via microbial virulence factors precedes the formation of amyloid β plaques. The amyloid β peptide, possessing antimicrobial properties, may be beneficial at an early stage of AD, but becomes detrimental with the progression of the disease, concomi- tantly with alterations to the innate immune system at both the peripheral and central levels. Infection results in neuroinflam- mation, leading to, and sustained by, systemic inflammation, causing eventual neurodegeneration, and the senescence of the immune cells. The sources of AD-involved microbes are various body microbiome communities from the gut, mouth, nose, and skin. The infection hypothesis of AD opens a vista to new therapeutic approaches, either by treating the infection itself or modulating the immune system, its senescence, or the body’s metabolism, either separately, in parallel, or in a multi-step way.Basque Government under the grant “Artificial Intelligence in BCAM number EXP. 2019/00432

    Hadron Spectrum in QCD with Valence Wilson Fermions and Dynamical Staggered Fermions at $6/g^2=5.6

    We present an analysis of hadronic spectroscopy for Wilson valence quarks with dynamical staggered fermions at lattice coupling 6/g2=β=5.66/g^2 = \beta=5.6 at sea quark mass amq=0.01am_q=0.01 and 0.025, and of Wilson valence quarks in quenched approximation at β=5.85\beta=5.85 and 5.95, both on 163×3216^3 \times 32 lattices. We make comparisons with our previous results with dynamical staggered fermions at the same parameter values but on 16416^4 lattices doubled in the temporal direction.Comment: 32 page
