<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Events before birth, condition at birth, events immediately following birth, and condition in early childhood are linked together, and have implications for health and disease in adulthood. At present, there is lack of clarity about the tests that purport to link these various stages. This is partly because there is paucity of collated information about the best strategies for predicting longer-term outcomes before (using tests in fetal period) or after birth (using tests in neonatal period, infancy as well as early childhood).</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>A series of systematic reviews and meta-analyses will be undertaken to determine, amongst neonates, the ability of various tests and measures to predict infant, childhood and adult outcomes. We will search Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, MEDION, citation lists of review articles and eligible primary articles and will contact experts in the field. Independent reviewers will select studies, extract data and assess study quality according to established criteria. Language restrictions will not be applied. Data synthesis will involve meta-analysis (where appropriate), exploration of heterogeneity and publication bias. Evidence collated will be graded for its quality to support decision making.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>The project will collate, synthesise and evaluate the available evidence concerning the value of tests of neonatal wellbeing to predict long term outcomes. The systematic reviews will assess the quality of available evidence and identify tests with the strongest association with outcomes, and assess their economic value. The output of this project will help formulate practice recommendations.</p
Smell Dysfunction in Patients with Primary Sjögren’s Syndrome: Impact on Quality of Life
Objectives: Patients with primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS) often report smell and taste disturbances. However, the correlation between smell impairment and mucosal dryness is not well understood. The objectives of this study were to investigate the following: (1) the prevalence of smell hypofunction in patients with SS; (2) the impact of smell hypofunction on their quality of life (QoL); (3) whether the patients’ smell is correlated with xerostomia; and (4) whether the patients’ smell is affected by taste hypofunction, disease duration, age, smoking or self-reported neuropathy. Methodology: An ethically approved cross-sectional study was conducted on 65 female patients with SS and 62 sex-matched healthy controls. Their smell was assessed using the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test. Their taste acuity was assessed using the Taste Strips Test. A visual analogue scale was used for the self-assessment of smell and taste functions. Xerostomia was assessed by the salivary flow rate, clinical oral dryness score and the Xerostomia Inventory. The patients’ QoL and mental health well-being were assessed using validated questionnaires. Results: In the SS group, the patients’ smell function was impaired in 27/65 patients compared with the controls (15/62, p < 0.05), and it did not correlate with the severity of xerostomia, taste acuity (r = 0.05, p = 0.6) or self-reported nasal dryness (r = −0.02, p = 0.7). In the patients’ group, smell hypofunction was not correlated with disease duration (β = 0.1, 95% CI = −0.07–0.1) or smoking (β = −0.02, 95% CI = −8–7). Age was not correlated with the smell function in the patients’ group (β = −0.1, p = 0.5) but was correlated significantly with smell in the healthy participants’ group (β = −0.3, p = 0.02). Neuropathy affected 81.2% of the patients’ group. Their QoL and mental health well-being were not affected by smell hypofunction. Conclusion: Smell hypofunction appears to be a clinical manifestation in patients with SS, but it does not seem to be associated with the severity of mucosal dryness or with taste disturbance
Bandgap narrowing in Mn doped GaAs probed by room-temperature photoluminescence
The electronic band structure of the (Ga,Mn)As system has been one of the
most intriguing problems in solid state physics over the past two decades.
Determination of the band structure evolution with increasing Mn concentration
is a key issue to understand the origin of ferromagnetism. Here we present room
temperature photoluminescence and ellipsometry measurements of
Ga_{100%-x}Mn_{x}As alloy. The up-shift of the valence-band is proven by the
red shift of the room temperature near band gap emission from the
Ga_{100%-x}Mn_{x}As alloy with increasing Mn content. It is shown that even a
doping by 0.02 at.% of Mn affects the valence-band edge and it merges with the
impurity band for a Mn concentration as low as 0.6 at.%. Both X-ray diffraction
pattern and high resolution cross-sectional TEM images confirmed full
recrystallization of the implanted layer and GaMnAs alloy formation.Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures, accepted at Phys. Rev. B 201
High Curie temperature and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in homoepitaxial InMnAs films
We have prepared the dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS) InMnAs with
different Mn concentrations by ion implantation and pulsed laser melting. The
Curie temperature of the In1-xMnxAs epilayer depends on the Mn concentration x,
reaching 82 K for x=0.105. The substitution of Mn ions at the Indium sites
induces a compressive strain perpendicular to the InMnAs layer and a tensile
strain along the in-plane direction. This gives rise to a large perpendicular
magnetic anisotropy, which is often needed for the demonstration of electrical
control of magnetization and for spin-transfer-torque induced magnetization
