Does Trade With Labour Sending Countries Reduce Demand For Migrant Workers: A Lesson From Malaysia

    Get PDF
This paper has three objectives. The first objective is to examine the long-run relationships among exports, imports, income and demand for migrant workers. This is followed by a causality test between these variables as the second objective. Finally, the third objective is to examine the extent to which exports, imports and income affect the demand for migrant workers. The study utilizes time series data and a Vector Auto Regressive (VAR) framework while examining two models, namely, Malaysia and Malaysia-Indonesia (Malindo). The findings show that all variables in the models are cointegrated. Generally, there is no short-run causality between variables in the models. In the long-run, causality runs from exports, imports and income to demand for migrant workers for the Malaysia model. There is bi-directional causality in the long-run between exports and imports, respectively, and demand for migrant workers in the Malindo model. Exports and demand for migrant workers in the Malaysia model, and exports and imports, respectively, and demand for migrant workers from Indonesia in the Malindo model are substitutes. Moreover, the income per capita for Malaysia has a non-significant negative effect on the demand for total migrant workers and a significant positive effect on the demand for migrant workers from Indonesia. The study suggests that trade can be a necessary instrument, but not a sufficient instrument for reducing the demand for migrant workers

Utilising several manufacturing sub-sectors in Malaysia, this study attempts to investigate the spillover effect of US FDI on Malaysian economy. By identifying this issue, it could help in terms of selecting future FDI-related strategies in order to magnify the positive effect of FDI inflows. Applying seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) method, this study observes that there is no guarantee that FDI inflows into various sectors within manufacturing industry will generate positive externalities

Environment sustainability plays a vital role as it indirectly affects the well-being of a country. There are many aspects of environment issues that needs to be focused on and this study chooses to highlight the municipal solid waste topic. By applying a panel data analysis, this paper is determined to examine the impact of economic variables towards the total municipal waste disposal in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Various economic variables have been proven to affect the municipal waste disposal in a country. In this study, total population, unemployment rate and urban population rate from 2003 until 2017 are used to analyze its influence on the total municipal waste disposal. Methods adopted are the panel unit root tests, panel cointegration tests FMOLS as well as panel Granger causality test. It is found that all variables are significant in this study and affects the total municipal waste disposal in short run of the Scandinavian countries. However, the study finds that unemployment rate is insignificant to the total of municipal waste disposal in the long run

This research study is conducted to examine the relationship between economic development, population, carbon dioxide (CO2) emission, energy consumption and foreign direct investment during the process of urbanization in selected countries namely Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The annual dataset is taken from 2010 to 2017 in World Bank and CEIC. Software Eviews 10 is used for panel data analysis and tests used are Descriptive analysis, Pooled Ordinary Least Square (POLS) Method, Correlation Test, Random Effect Model, Fixed Effect Model, Breusch-Pagan LM test, Hausman Test, Panel Unit Root Test, Panel Cointegration Test and Panel Granger Causality Test. Results shows that all variable data is valid as the mean for each variable was below the range of minimum and maximum values reflect that there is no possible outlier. In addition, majority of the variables are in 1st order and found to be cointegrated, indicating the existence of a long-term equilibrium relationship between carbon dioxide emissions, FDI, population and energy consumption in terms of GDP. In the short term, there are three uni-directional Granger causality that run from GDP, energy consumption and foreign investment to population, while ECT shows that population and energy use exist in the long run. Policies such as decentralization, business and industry. and human resources need to be implemented by policy makers in selected ASEAN countries to ensure economic growth without affecting the environment during the process of urbanization

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to analyze the issue of bayʿ wa salaf (the combination of sale and loan contracts in a single arrangement) from the Sharīʿah perspective. Based on the Sharīʿah findings on the issue, the paper examines the existing Islamic banking products and services that use these two specific contracts to determine whether the current practice is in line with Sharīʿah. Design/methodology/approach - The paper uses the qualitative method by reviewing and analyzing relevant literature and operational structures to comprehend the issues pertaining to bayʿ (sale) and salaf (loan). It then provides Sharīʿah parameters for bayʿ wa salaf before applying them in assessing some existing Islamic banking products and practices. Subsequently, the compliance status of the banking operations that use these contracts in a specific product structure can be ascertained. Findings - The paper finds that the bayʿ wa salaf arrangement in the existing Islamic banking products and services, as elaborated in the paper, does not fall under the prohibited category. This deduction is made in accordance with the parameters derived from jurists’ discussion on the issue of bayʿ wa salaf. It also takes into consideration other factors influencing the existence of such arrangements. Research limitations/implications - This conceptual research highlights the jurists’ discussion on the issue of bayʿ wa salaf and the compliance status of the current products and services that use the contracts in a single arrangement (specifically in the case of Malaysia) without discussing other possible structures that can be applied as an alternative to the bayʿ wa salaf arrangement. Practical implications - Thorough understanding of the issue can strengthen the industry’s confidence in executing operations that conform to Sharīʿah principles. Originality/value - The paper provides comprehensive deliberation on the ruling of bayʿ wa salaf from various schools of thought and exhaustive elaboration on existing Islamic banking products that apply bayʿ wa salaf in their structures. This contributes in reinforcing the stakeholders’ confidence in the operations of Islamic banking and finance

By using an input-output model, this paper attempts to examine the economic impact on the Malaysian economy resulting from an increase in crude oil petroleum price. By simulating different levels of crude oil prices, we found that an increase in the world crude oil petroleum price gives more capacity to the economy in generating output and revenue collected by the government in the form of direct and indirect taxes. However, it is very clear that if the crude oil price reaches USD60/barrel, the government will be required to subsidise about RM8.27 of the petrol retail price in order to maintain the current price level.
