    A study of the fracture, mechanical behaviour and morphology of an epoxy resin system

    The fracture and mechanical properties of an epoxy resin system have been investigated as a function of changes in stoichiometry and heat treatment. Relationships between the various macroscopically measured properties and the microscopic characteristics of the cured resin are described. The investigation shows that the concept of fracture surface work, Ƴ , measured by a cleavage technique, is a sensitive parameter for monitoring changes in the resin's fracture properties and that the Irwin-Kies and Berry analyses can provide a more sensitive monitor of Ƴ than the Gurney method, in some circumstances. The investigation also demonstrates how the elastic and visco-elastic properties of the resin can effect plasticisation at the tip of a crack, with consequent improvement in fracture toughness. To aid the interpretation of the mechanical data, a morphological characterisation of the cured resin will be described in which quantitative infrared spectroscopy, thermo-mechanical analysis, solvent. uptake resistance, chemical and ion-beam etching methods have been used

    Longitudinal panel data study of self-rated health among migrants in French-speaking Switzerland, 2003–2017

    Introduction Studies have documented poorer health among migrants than natives of several European countries, but little is known for Switzerland. We assessed the association between country of birth, socioeconomic factors and self-reported health (SRH) in a prospective cohort of adults living in Lausanne, Switzerland.Methods We used the data from the Colaus panel data study for three periods: 2003–2006 (n=6733), 2009–2012 (n=5064) and 2014–2017 (n=4555) corresponding to 35% of the source population. The response variable was SRH. Main explanatory variables were socioeconomic status, educational level, professional status, income, gender, age and years in Switzerland. The main covariate was country of birth, dichotomised as born in Switzerland or not. We specified random effects logistic regressions and used Bayesian methods for the inference.Results Being born outside of Switzerland was not associated with worse SRH (OR 1.09, 95% CI 0.52 to 2.31). Several other patient variables were, however, predictive of poor health. Educational level was inversely associated with the risk of reporting poor health. Monthly household income showed a gradient where higher income was associated with lower odds of reporting poor SRH, for both for migrants and non-migrants. Migrant women had lower odds of reporting poor SRH than men (OR 0.73, 95% CI 0.55 to 0.98). Migrant people living in couple have less risk of reporting poor SRH than people who live alone and the risk is lower for migrant people living in couple with children (OR 0.66, 95% CI 0.55 to 0.80).Discussion Migrant status was not associated with poorer SRH.     Randomised double blind placebo controlled trial investigating the effect of calcium and vitamin D supplementation on bone mineral density and bone metabolism in adult patients with cystic fibrosis

    AbstractBackgroundLow bone mineral density (BMD) is prevalent in adults with cystic fibrosis and might be related to calcium and vitamin D malabsorption from the gastrointestinal tract. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of calcium and vitamin D supplementation on BMD and bone metabolism in these subjects.MethodsPatients were invited to participate if they had a BMD Z score of −1 or less in the lumbar spine, proximal femur or distal forearm. Patients were randomised to receive calcium 1 g+vitamin D 800 IU or placebo daily, in addition to their regular vitamin D supplements (900 IU/day). BMD and bone biochemical markers were measured before and after 1 year of treatment.ResultsAfter 12 months, the treatment group (n=15) showed a reduced rate of bone loss compared with the control group (n=15) in the lumbar spine (mean difference 1.9% [CI −0.9% to 4.6%]), total hip (mean difference 0.7% [CI −2.2% to 3.5%]) and distal forearm (mean difference 1.7% [CI −2.2% to 5.5%]), but these changes did not reach statistical significance. There was also a trend towards a reduction in bone turnover in the treatment group.ConclusionsCalcium and vitamin D supplementation reduced the rate of bone turnover and bone loss in adult patients with cystic fibrosis, but these changes did not reach statistical significance. These data suggest that a longer term trial of this simple intervention would be justified

    Patient leaflets on respiratory tract infections did not improve shared decision making and antibiotic prescriptions in a low-prescriber setting

    Patient information leaflets can reduce antibiotic prescription rates by improving knowledge and encouraging shared decision making (SDM) in patients with respiratory tract infections (RTI). The effect of these interventions in antibiotic low-prescriber settings is unknown. We conducted a pragmatic pre-/post interventional study between October 2022 and March 2023 in Swiss outpatient care. The intervention was the provision of patient leaflets informing about RTIs and antibiotics use. Main outcomes were the extent of SDM, antibiotic prescription rates, and patients' awareness/knowledge about antibiotic use in RTIs. 408 patients participated in the pre-intervention period, and 315 patients in the post- intervention period. There was no difference in the extent of SDM (mean score (range 0-100): 65.86 vs. 64.65, p = 0.565), nor in antibiotic prescription rates (no prescription: 89.8% vs. 87.2%, p = 0.465) between the periods. Overall awareness/knowledge among patients with RTI was high and leaflets showed only a small effect on overall awareness/knowledge. In conclusion, in an antibiotic low-prescriber setting, patient information leaflets may improve knowledge, but may not affect treatment decisions nor antibiotic prescription rates for RTIs

    Measles virus causes immunogenic cell death in human melanoma

    Oncolytic viruses (OV) are promising treatments for cancer, with several currently undergoing testing in randomised clinical trials. Measles virus (MV) has not yet been tested in models of human melanoma. This study demonstrates the efficacy of MV against human melanoma. It is increasingly recognised that an essential component of therapy with OV is the recruitment of host anti-tumour immune responses, both innate and adaptive. MV-mediated melanoma cell death is an inflammatory process, causing the release of inflammatory cytokines including type-1 interferons and the potent danger signal HMGB1. Here, using human in vitro models, we demonstrate that MV enhances innate antitumour activity, and that MV-mediated melanoma cell death is capable of stimulating a melanoma-specific adaptive immune response
