    Determinants of gastric cancer screening attendance in Korea: a multi-level analysis

Method Data on gastric cancer screening and individual-level characteristics were obtained from the 2007–2009 Fourth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The area-level variables were collected from the 2005 National Population Census, 2008 Korea Medical Association, and 2010 National Health Insurance Corporation. The data were analyzed using multilevel logistic regression models. Results The estimated participation rate in gastric cancer screening adhered to the Korea National Cancer Screening Program guidelines was 44.0% among 10,658 individuals aged over 40 years who were included in the analysis. Among the individual-level variables, the highest income quartile, a college or higher education level, living with spouse, having a private health insurance, limited general activity, previous history of gastric or duodenal ulcer, and not currently smoking were associated with a higher participation rate in gastric cancer screening. Urbanization showed a significant negative association with gastric cancer screening attendance among the area-level factors (odds ratio (OR) = 0.73; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.57-0.93 for the most urbanized quartile vs. least urbanized quartile). Conclusion There are differences in gastric cancer screening attendance according to both individual and regional area characteristics

    Associations of reproductive factors with incidence of myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke in postmenopausal women: a cohort study

    Background To assess the association between the reproductive factors of age at menarche, age at menopause, and reproductive span and the incidence of myocardial infarction (MI) and ischemic stroke (IS). Methods We used a population-based retrospective cohort study from the National Health Insurance Service database of Korea including a total of 1,224,547 postmenopausal women. Associations between age at menarche (≤ 12, 13–14 [reference], 15, 16, and ≥ 17years), age at menopause (< 40, 40–45, 46–50, 51–54 [reference], and ≥ 55years), and reproductive span (< 30, 30–33, 34–36, 37–40 [reference], and ≥ 41years) and the incidence of MI and IS were assessed by Cox proportional hazard models with adjustment for traditional cardiovascular risk factors and various reproductive factors. Results During a median follow-up of 8.4years, 25,181 MI and 38,996 IS cases were identified. Late menarche (≥ 16years), early menopause (≤ 50years), and short reproductive span (≤ 36years) were linearly associated with a 6%, 12–40%, and 12–32% higher risk of MI, respectively. Meanwhile, a U-shaped association between age at menarche and risk of IS was found, with a 16% higher risk in early menarche (≤ 12years) and a 7–9% higher risk in late menarche (≥ 16years). Short reproductive span was linearly associated with an increased risk of MI, whereas both shorter and longer reproductive spans were associated with an increased risk of IS. Conclusions This study demonstrated different patterns of association between age at menarche and incidence of MI and IS: a linear association for MI versus a U-shaped association for IS. Female reproductive factors in addition to traditional cardiovascular risk factors should be considered when assessing overall cardiovascular risk in postmenopausal women

    Highly controllable transparent and conducting thin films using layer-by-layer assembly of oppositely charged reduced graphene oxides

    A new approach for the fabrication of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) multilayers which can be used for transparent and conducting thin films was developed. This was achieved by using layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of positively and negatively charged rGO sheets, which could provide highly controllable thin films in terms of thickness, transmittance, and sheet resistance. In particular, the thickness of the multilayer thin films of rGO was able to be controlled precisely in the subnanometre scale by similar to 0.46 nm via simply varying the number of stacking layers. Therefore, this method enabled an excellent control of the rGO multilayers over the optical and electrical properties, which are related to the thickness. Furthermore, we demonstrated the application of the rGO multilayers for an OLED device.close585

    Unexpected identification of a recurrent mutation in the DLX3 gene causing amelogenesis imperfecta

    Objective To identify the molecular genetic aetiology of a family with autosomal dominant amelogenesis imperfecta (AI). Subjects and Methods DNA samples were collected from a six-generation family, and the candidate gene approach was used to screen for the enamelin (ENAM) gene. Whole-exome sequencing and linkage analysis with SNP array data identified linked regions, and candidate gene screening was performed. Results Mutational analysis revealed a mutation (c.561_562delCT and p.Tyr188Glnfs*13) in the DLX3 gene. After finding a recurrent DLX3 mutation, the clinical phenotype of the family members was re-examined. The proband's mother had pulp elongation in the third molars. The proband had not hair phenotype, but her cousin had curly hair at birth. Conclusions In this study, we identified a recurrent 2-bp deletional DLX3 mutation in a new family. The clinical phenotype was the mildest one associated with the DLX3 mutations.     Achieving tolerant CO₂ electro-reduction catalyst in real water matrix

    In order to achieve practical application of electrochemical CO₂ conversion technologies, the development of durable catalyst in real water matrix is essential because the use of catalysts only showing high performance within a well-refined environment cannot guarantee their feasibility in realistic conditions. Here, we report a design strategy for a catalyst, which shows excellent tolerance to deactivation factors, using a carbon-based material under more practical condition implemented by real tap water. Screening analyses on various components in tap water elucidated that the impurity group, which can be deposited on the catalyst surface and impede the active sites, such as copper, zinc, and especially iron are the main factors responsible for deactivation. Based on these findings, the structural modified nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube (denoted as ball mill N-CNT) was adopted as a catalyst design to secure durability. Consequently, the ball mill N-CNT revealed tolerance to the disclosed deactivation factors and showed stable performance during unprecedented long-time of 120 h in tap water media

    Changes of Functional MRI Findings in a Patient Whose Pathological Gambling Improved with Fluvoxamine

    Legalized gambling is a growing industry, and is probably a factor in the presently increasing prevalence of pathological gambling. We present a case of a 36-year-old pathological gambler who was treated with fluvoxamine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, and who was assessed by functional MRI before and after drug administration. During activation periods, the pathological gambler was shown cards as stimuli, and fMRI results in several brain regions showed differential effects before and after medication and a maintenance period. This case demonstrates that the treatment response to fluvoxamine in a pathological gambler was observed not only by subjective self-report, but also by objective fMRI results. Therefore, fMRI may be a useful tool in the diagnosis and prediction of treatment response in patients afflicted with pathological gambling
