    Investigating the role of prey depletion in cetacean distributions and population dynamics

    34th European Cetacean Society Conference, O Grove, 16-20 April 2023A key driver in determining the distribution and demography of cetaceans is the dispersion of their prey, in terms of availability, abundance and quality. A Working Group on Resource Depletion has been established within ASCOBANS to review current knowledge and develop recommendations for research and action. It includes members with expertise in veterinary and fishery science, cetacean biology, ecology and conservation. The group has eight terms of reference - reviewing and collating recent information on resource depletion and its impacts, prey distribution and abundance, health and condition indicators, small cetacean diet, spatio-temporal trends in small cetacean species, emerging technologies, integrating information from multiple data sources, and making recommendations for possible mitigation measures to aid conservation. As a first step, the group has summarised information on the diets of all small cetacean species regularly occurring in the ASCOBANS Agreement Area, and explored the parameters required to assess cetacean health and condition at both an individual and population level. The need to better understand prey choice in terms of prey availability and caloric content is highlighted along with the development of indicators of food shortage through necropsies of dead animals and photographic assessments of body condition in live animals. Future research, monitoring and conservation needs include refining the definition of prey depletion, developing prey depletion reference points, and articulating associated conservation objectives. We also need a better understanding of the relationships between cetacean physiology, energetics, body condition, health and diet, and of the population and ecosystem level consequences of prey depletion (e.g. based on the use of ecosystem models).     Bullying Victimisation, Internalising Symptoms, and Conduct Problems in South African Children and Adolescents: A Longitudinal Investigation

    Bullying victimisation has been prospectively linked with mental health problems among children and adolescents in longitudinal studies in the developed world. However, research from the developing world, where adolescents face multiple risks to social and emotional development, has been limited by cross-sectional designs. This is the first longitudinal study of the psychological impacts of bullying victimisation in South Africa. The primary aim was to examine prospective relationships between bullying victimisation and internalising and externalising symptoms in South African youth. Secondary aims were to examine gender and age-related differences in experiences of bullying victimisation. Children and adolescents (10–17 years, 57 % female, n = 3,515) from high HIV-prevalent (>30 %) communities in South Africa were interviewed and followed-up 1 year later (97 % retention). Census enumeration areas were randomly selected from urban and rural sites in two provinces and door-to-door sampling included all households with a resident child/adolescent. Exposure to multiple experiences of bullying victimisation at baseline predicted internalising symptoms and conduct problems 1 year later. Additionally, baseline mental health scores predicted later bullying victimisation, demonstrating bi-directionality of relationships between bullying victimisation and mental health outcomes in this sample. Expected gender differences in physical, verbal, and relational bullying victimisation were evident and predicted declines in bullying victimisation over time were observed. In the developed world, school-based anti-bullying programmes have been shown to be effective in reducing bullying and victimisation. Anti-bullying programmes should be implemented and rigorously evaluated in South Africa, as this may promote improved mental health among South African children and adolescents

    Abstract Background Studies in both paediatric and psychiatric settings often experience problems in recruitment. This can compromise the ability of the study to recruit to target, meaning studies are potentially underpowered. It can also result in a biased sample if a non-representative group are selectively recruited. Recruitment to studies in health contexts often depends on healthcare professionals, who act as gatekeepers by screening patients for eligibility and obtaining consent for the research team to contact them. The experience of health professionals as gatekeepers in paediatric studies is poorly understood and may affect whether recruitment is successful or not. Methods Six out of seven eligible healthcare professionals from a specialist paediatric chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) team were interviewed. All participants were undertaking initial clinical assessments within which they were asked to identify eligible patients for an observational study of co-morbid mental health problems in adolescents with confirmed CFS/ME. This study had experienced particular recruitment problems, more so than other studies in the same service. Interview questions were designed to explore perceptions of research, and barriers and facilitators of recruitment. Interviews were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis was used. Results Participants espoused their commitment to the value of research. However, they perceived there to be a number of barriers to recruitment. Barriers within the clinical context included time pressures and the emotional nature of initial clinical assessments. Barriers posed by the wider research context included recruiting to multiple studies at the same time. Factors specific to the observational study of mental health in CFS/ME included aspects of the study design, such as the name and nature of the study, as well as the focus of the study itself. Participants made a number of recommendations about how recruitment barriers could be overcome. Conclusions The current study highlights the need to carefully consider, at design stage, how to overcome potential barriers to recruitment. Gatekeepers should be actively involved at this stage to ensure that the study is set up in such a way to best enable recruitment activities within the clinical setting

This includes a large number of delphinids, the most common of which arecommon dolphin (Delphinus delphis), striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba), bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus),white-beaked dolphin (Lagenorhynchus albirostris),Atlantic white-sided dolphin (Lagenorhynchus acutus), Risso’s dolphin (Grampus griseus), long-finned pilot whale (Globicephala melas), and killer whale (Orcinus orca). Other small odontocetes present include several beaked-whales: northern bottlenose whale (Hyperoodon ampullatus); Sowerby’s beaked whale (Mesoplodon bidens); and Cuvier’s beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris).
