    Proximate composition of five species of flat fishes

    Five species of flat fishes, namely Cynoglossus semifaciatus, C. lida, C. bilineatus, C. macrolepidotus and Psettodes erumei caught in trawlers off Mangalore were analysed for proximate composition of different body parts. These data are discussed in terms of their variability and applications. In whole body of C. lida and C. semifaciatus mean values for moisture, protein, fat and ash content on dry basis respectively were 75.9%, 75.3%, 7.1%, 16.1% and 78.9%, 75.6%. 7.9% and 16.6%. Mean values of these constituents of edible parts in the same order for C. semifaciatus and Psettodes erumei were 77.3%, 80.7%, 7.8%, 10.8% and 77.4%, 86.2%, 3.5% and 11.1% respectively

    Symmetric nonlinear matched filters (SNMF’s) involve the transformation of the signal spectrum and the filter transfer function through pointwise nonlinearities before they are multiplied in the transform domain. The resulting system is analogous to a 3-layer neural net The experimental and theoretical results discussed indicate that SNMF’s hold considerable potential to achieve high-power of discrimination, resolution and large SNR. The statistical analysis of a particular SNMF in the 2-class problem indicates that the performance coefficient of the SNMF is about four times larger than the performance coefficient of the classical matched filter. In terms of resolving closeby signals, there seems to be no limit to die achievable resolution. However, intermodulation noise has to be carefully monitored

    Is antegrade K-wire pinning better than retrograde pinning for distal radius fracture? A comparative study

    Background: The treatment of distal end radius has undergone tremendous changes over the years due to better understanding of the fracture anatomy, mechanism of injury and development of newer techniques and implants. The objective of treatment of distal end radius fracture is to restore the anatomy and to obtain early function. Percutaneous pinning is a minimally invasive technique to maintain the reduction and prevent re-displacement of the fracture fragments. Sato et al. introduced a technique of fixation for the unstable extra-articular distal radial fractures by manual reduction and antegrade intra-medullary pinning.Methods: A retrospective study with a sample size of 30, where 15 of the selected patients had undergone antegrade fixation and the rest 15 had undergone retrograde fixation.Results: Patients were evaluated for functional and radiological outcomes after a mean follow up of one year. No statistically significant difference was found between the two methods.Conclusions: Both the procedures were effective in managing the distal radius fracture with preservation of fracture hematoma. However soft tissue complications were less in antegrade pinning as compared to retrograde.

    Basic FGF regulates the expression of a functional 71 kDa NMDA receptor protein that mediates calcium influx and neurotoxicity in hippocampal neurons

    This is the publisher's version, also available electronically from "http://www.jneurosci.org".Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) was recently found to modulate the outgrowth-regulating effects of glutamate, and protected neurons from several brain regions against excitotoxi/ischemic damage. We provide evidence that the excitoprotective mechanism of bFGF involves suppression of the expression of a 71 kDa NMDA receptor protein (NMDARP- 71). NMDARP-71 protein and mRNA levels were reduced in neurons in bFGF- treated hippocampal cell cultures. The levels of the NMDARP-71 were not reduced by NGF or epidermal growth factor, and bFGF did not reduce the level of mRNA for the GluR1 kainate/AMPA receptor, demonstrating the specificity of the effect of bFGF on the NMDARP-71. The reduction in NMDARP-71 expression in bFGF-treated neurons was correlated with reduced vulnerability to NMDA neurotoxicity. A major role for NMDARP-71 in calcium responses to NMDA and excitotoxicity was demonstrated using antisense oligonucleotides directed against NMDARP-71. Northern and Western blot analysis and immunocytochemistry showed that NMDARP-71 antisense oligonucleotides caused a selective suppression of NMDARP-71 mRNA and protein levels during 12–44 hr exposure periods. Elevations in intracellular calcium levels normally caused by glutamate and NMDA were attenuated in neurons exposed to NMDARP-71 antisense oligonucleotide; calcium responses to kainate were relatively unaffected. NMDARP-71 antisense oligonucleotides protected the neurons against excitotoxicity. Thus, NMDARP-71 is a necessary component of an NMDA receptor mediating calcium responses and neurotoxicity in hippocampal neurons. Taken together, these data identify a mechanism whereby bFGF can modify neuronal responses to glutamate, and suggest that regulating the expression of excitatory amino acid receptors may provide a means for growth factors to influence the plasticity and degeneration of neural circuits

AI became promising stuff for computerizing the discovery and characterization of skin illnesses. This study presents a clever methodology that uses the choice tree strategy for skin sickness location. In computerized location, we utilize an exhaustive dataset containing different skin sickness pictures, including melanoma, psoriasis, dermatitis, and contagious diseases. Dermatologists skillfully mark the dataset, guaranteeing solid ground truth for precise grouping. Preprocessing strategies like resizing, standardization, and quality improvement are applied to set up the symbolism for the choice tree calculation. Then, we remove applicable elements from the preprocessed pictures, enveloping surface, variety, and shape descriptors to catch infection explicit examples successfully. The choice tree model is prepared utilizing these removed elements and the named dataset. Utilizing the choice tree's capacity to learn progressive designs and choice principles, our methodology accomplishes an elevated degree of exactness in grouping skin sicknesses.     1. The kinetics of the enzymic hydrolysis of inulin has been followed in the two-bulbed dilatometer and also by an estimation of the fructose released by Bertrand's method. 2. For a given concentration of substrate, inulin hydrolysis is accompanied by a greater depression of volume than that obtained for starch hydrolysis. It is suggested that systems involving the release of fructose during hydrolysis suffer a greater volume depression; this is well illustrated by the difference in volume occurring during the hydrolysis of maltose and sucrose. 3. The dilatometric depression per millimol release of fructose during the hydrolysis of inulin is 7·9 mm3 (average value) and is independent of the concentration of the inulin employed.     In recent years, technological advancements have greatly benefited the field of prosthetics. A large number of disabled people depend on prosthetics because they are an important technology. In order to provide augmentative and alternative methods of communication to these disabled people with various neuromuscular disorders, we must make sure they are provided with appropriate equipment to express themselves. Different types of arms are evaluated under robotic technology in terms of resistance, usability, flexibility, cost, and potential (such as robotic, surgical, bionic, prosthetic, and static arms). The main problems with these techniques are their high cost, the difficulty of installing and maintaining them, and the possibility of requiring surgery may arise. As a result, this paper is going to provide a description of the idea for combining an EEG controlled smart prosthetic arm with a smart robotic hand. An electrode headset is used to capture the signals from the robotic hand in order to control the device. Creating a robot arm that can help disabled people lead a more independent life is the main objective of this paper

    Imaging criteria to predict Shamblin group in carotid body tumors – revisited

    PURPOSEThis study aims to compare the imaging findings of carotid body tumors on contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) with the intraoperative Shamblin grade and to evolve an imaging-based scoring system that can accurately predict the Shamblin grade.METHODSPreoperative contrast-enhanced CT scans of 40 patients who underwent surgical excision of carotid body tumors in our institution between 2004 and 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. The angle of contact with the internal carotid artery (ICA), tumor volume, presence of peritumoral tuft of veins, loss of tumor adventitia interface and distance from the skull base were assessed and compared with the intraoperative Shamblin grades of the tumor. Ordinal logistic regression was used to determine which parameters could be predictors of the Shamblin grades. Receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curves were used to score the tumor volumes.RESULTSAmong the 42 tumors evaluated, 6 (14.3%) were surgically classified as Shamblin I, 15 (35.7%) as Shamblin II, and 21 (50%) as Shamblin III tumors. Pairwise comparison between the three Shamblin groups showed a statistically significant difference for angle of contact with ICA, maximum tumor dimension, presence of peritumoral tuft of veins and loss of tumor adventitia interface (p = 0.001, p = 0.001, p = 0.038 and p = 0.003, respectively). However, tumor volumes and distance from skull base were not significantly different between the Shamblin groups (p = 0.136 and p = 0.682). A scoring system, including four of the above mentioned parameters (angle of contact with ICA, tumor volume, presence of peritumoral tuft of veins, and loss of tumor adventitia interface) was developed with a maximum score of 8 and a minimum of 2. A statistically significant difference was found between the final scores among the three Shamblin groups (p 1000 mL had Shamblin grade III tumors. Postoperative complications like stroke, ICA thrombosis and lower cranial nerve palsies were seen only with Shamblin grade II and III tumors.CONCLUSIONThe simple scoring system we have proposed correlates well with the Shamblin grade and helps in identifying patients who have a higher risk of developing complications

    Phosphoproteomics of retinoblastoma:A pilot study identifies aberrant kinases

    Retinoblastoma is a malignant tumour of the retina which most often occurs in children. Earlier studies on retinoblastoma have concentrated on the identification of key players in the disease and have not provided information on activated/inhibited signalling pathways. The dysregulation of protein phosphorylation in cancer provides clues about the affected signalling cascades in cancer. Phosphoproteomics is an ideal tool for the study of phosphorylation changes in proteins. Hence, global phosphoproteomics of retinoblastoma (RB) was carried out to identify signalling events associated with this cancer. Over 350 proteins showed differential phosphorylation in RB compared to control retina. Our study identified stress response proteins to be hyperphosphorylated in RB which included H2A histone family member X (H2AFX) and sirtuin 1. In particular, Ser140 of H2AFX also known as gamma-H2AX was found to be hyperphosphorylated in retinoblastoma, which indicated the activation of DNA damage response pathways. We also observed the activation of anti-apoptosis in retinoblastoma compared to control. These observations showed the activation of survival pathways in retinoblastoma. The identification of hyperphosphorylated protein kinases including Bromodomain containing 4 (BRD4), Lysine deficient protein kinase 1 (WNK1), and Cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (CDK1) in RB opens new avenues for the treatment of RB. These kinases can be considered as probable therapeutic targets for RB, as small-molecule inhibitors for some of these kinases are already in clinical trials for the treatment other cancers
