La medida de la participación de los niños en las actividades de ocio y tiempo libre: validez de constructo del Cape y del Pac
Se necesitan medidas de la participación de los niños en las actividades de ocio y tiempo libre, psicométricamente fuertes, tanto para la práctica clínica como para la investigación. Este artículo proporciona información acerca de la validez de constructo del Children’s Assessment of Participation and Enjoyment (CAPE) y de su instrumento complementario, el Preferences for Activities of Children (PAC). Estas medidas son apropiadas para niños y jóvenes con y sin discapacidad de edades comprendidas entre los 6 y 21 años. Proporcionan información acerca de seis dimensiones de la participación (diversidad, intensidad, dónde, con quién, disfrute y preferencia) y dos categorías de actividades de ocio y tiempo libre: (i) actividades formales e informales; y (ii) cinco tipos de actividades (tiempo libre, actividad física, social, basada en habilidad y autosuperación). Este artículo proporciona información sobre el desempeño de los resultados de los tipos de actividad del CAPE y PAC a partir de los datos de un estudio en el que participaron 427 niños con discapacidad física de edades comprendidas entre los 6 y 15 años. Los resultados de Intensidad, disfrute y preferencia correlacionaron significativamente con las variables ambientales, de la familia y del niño, como se esperaba. Las predicciones también fueron apoyadas en lo que respecta a las diferencias en las puntuaciones medias para los niños frente a las niñas y a los niños en diversos grupos de edad. La información fundamenta la validez de constructo de las medidas. Se exponen la utilidad clínica e investigadora de las medidas
Development of an outcome measurement system for service planning for children and youth with special needs
Aim This study described the process used in developing an outcome measurement framework for system planning to improve services for children and youth with special needs and their families in a Canadian province. The study reports the results of several parent-completed measures, which would be useful in service planning as well as the acceptability and utility of these measures for use by families and service centres. Methods/results Development of a theoretical framework, consultation with key stakeholders, testing the utility of selected outcome measures and initial dissemination of results were critical elements in the successful development of an outcome system. Consultation with stakeholders confirmed use of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health and the child-within-family-within community model as theoretical frameworks while building valuable partnerships and identifying potential barriers to implementation. Pilot testing showed three outcome measures were feasible for families to complete and the measures provided information about services for children that was valuable to families as well as service providers. Gaps in service delivery were identified and the need for better communication between service providers and communities to facilitate integrated services was highlighted. Conclusion The findings from this study can be used to implement an outcome measurement system for children with special needs and may serve as a resource for international researchers who are working to develop valid tools as well as outcome systems that are useful for system planning

Measurement Practices in Pediatric Rehabilitation A Survey of Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and Speech-Language Pathologists in Ontario
We investigated measurement practices in pediatric rehabilitation. We conducted a survey of 63 physical, 72 occupational, and 74 speech-language therapists working in one of 16 children\u27s rehabilitation programs in Ontario, Canada. Therapists were surveyed about their measurement practices, and their confidence, beliefs, and attitudes about measurement. Results showed that standardized clinical measures were used frequently, but were often modified. Clinicians rated themselves as least comfortable with statistical concepts related to the uncertainty in test scores, and rated factors related to finding appropriate measures as the most important influences on their measurement practices. Some variance in measurement attitudes and practices was associated with treatment centre of practice, suggesting that there may be organizational or peer influences on measurement behaviour. The results have implications for continuing education, measurement development, and interventions designed to facilitate sound measurement practices
