International audienceLa communication se propose d’approfondir les réflexions menées sur la place et le rôle des publics dans le cadre de recherches interdisciplinaires menées au sein des établissements d’enseignement supérieurs et de recherche de Nantes. A partir de cas d’études patrimoniaux, elle vise à définir une nouvelle approche de la médiation culturelle et patrimoniale et tend à établir les nouvelles bases du processus de création/recréation des espaces et objets patrimoniaux (patrimoine matériel et immatériel) à partir de nou-veaux paradigmes épistémologiques des Humanités Numériques unissant tant les approches en science humaine et sociale qu’en ingénierie 3D

Creating interactivity of our heritage stored in Museums: Experimentation with Château des Ducs de Bretagne History Museum of Nantes, France

International audienceFor the 2006 VRIC conference, we presented a scientific article dealing with a new way of thinking our technical heritage. We propose to preserve it as a digital object. However it does not mean beautiful 3D animation with nice static rendering; indeed, we create virtual mock-up which are dynamically operating. We use CAD software and engineering simulation tools. Nowadays the global methodology has been improved: it is named Advanced Industrial Archaeology. In this communication, we will detail a new experimentation done in partnership with a French museum: the Château des Ducs de Bretagne in France. This project deals with a physical mock-up of Nantes city built in 1899 and exposed in 1900 for the World Fair that took place in Paris, France. The heritage object is nowadays in the museum but exposed as “a fish inside an aquarium”. Thanks to a virtual system coupling a tactile screen with semantic research modules, a 3D active screen and a light pointer, it will allow the visitor to better understand the mock-up and emphasize important places of Nantes city life

De la théorie au modèle : les hélices comme sculptures calculées, le cas des Fonderies de l’Atlantique à Nantes

La découverte, l’étude et la sauvegarde partielle des bâtiments des anciennes « Fonderies de l’Atlantique » à Nantes en 2001-2002 ont permis également de révéler puis de conserver une extraordinaire collection d’objets de fonderie au sable correspondant à la fabrication des hélices et des pales d’hélice pour les plus gros navires commerciaux et militaires. La technologie de fonderie d’alliage de cuivre pour les hélices avait été adoptée en 1937 dans l’entreprise. L’ensemble des modèles en bois de pales d’hélice est d’abord apparu comme une accumulation de sculptures monumentales particulièrement épurées. L’étude technologique plus fine montre cependant que cette « beauté » réelle ne correspond nullement à la volonté d’un artiste mais relève uniquement des calculs liés pour chaque production à un projet de navire. Et c’est seulement le calcul qui permet d’expliquer les réalisations d’hélices monoblocs par troussage, sans modèle aucun ; il ne reste alors de traces que les outils du troussage. Il s’agit bien dès lors d’un patrimoine scientifique - la transposition matérielle d’un calcul mathématique - tout autant que d’un patrimoine technique et industriel. C’est cette particularité qui fait la grande originalité de l’ensemble conservé par la communauté urbaine, en attendant, nous l’espérons, une valorisation future.In 2001 and 2002, the study and partial preservation of the buildings of the former Fonderies de l’Atlantic in Nantes also allowed for the preservation of a remarkable collection of objects related to the sand foundry casting carried out by this firm, specialised in propellers for major commercial and military vessels. The firm began to employ copper alloys in its foundry techniques from 1937. The collection of wooden models prepared for the casting of propellers appears, at first sight, as a remarkable accumulation of rather abstract monumental sculptures. More detailed technical study of these objects, however, shows that their undeniable aesthetic qualities resulted only from the calculations required by particular projects for particular vessels. And it was by calculation alone, without wooden models, that the firm was able to manufacture propellers in a single piece, by trussing techniques. In this case, the only surviving material traces today are the trussing tools. Here then is a scientific heritage, the material expression of mathematical calculations, which is at the same time a technical and industrial heritage. This is doubtless the originality of the collection held today by the Nantes local authorities, and which, we hope, will soon be displayed and interpreted for the general public

Pour l’utilisation des SIG (systèmes d’information géographique) en histoire des techniques : entre documentation et analyse spatiale

La recherche en histoire des techniques peut-elle passer par l’analyse spatiale ? Un bilan sommaire de la question de la représentation graphique spatiale dans la littérature française permet d’ouvrir le débat sur les échelles de lecture nécessaires pour aborder la notion de paysage industriel. Les travaux en cours du Centre François Viète de l’université de Nantes se développent autour de deux approches complémentaires : les mondes portuaires et l’introduction des technologies numériques dans l’histoire. Les approches de rétroconception sont à mettre en perspective avec leur intégration dans la dimension spatiale des procédés, qui passe par le développement des SIG. L’article aborde les exemples de La Ciotat et Nantes.Can research in technical history be done through spatial analysis ? A short assessment of the question of spatial graphic representation in French scientific production provides an opportunity to open discussion about the necessary scales to deal with the notion of industrial landscape. The works in process at the Centre François Viète (Nantes university) operates on two complementary levels : port territory and digital technologies in history. Reverse engineering must be put into perspective with their integration in a spatial industrial process dimension, which development is important with GIS methodology. Ce travail propose un outil numérique de gestion de contenu historique (récits et sources) pour documenter et valoriser les objets du patrimoine technique. En fonction des situations, différentes interfaces permettent d’accéder aux connaissances, une interface de navigation en 3D est ici proposée en exemple. L’objet technique et le travail de l’historien sont conjointement valorisés

Where Virtual Enhances Physical Mock-Up: A Way to Understand our Heritage

International audienceIn Museum, many testimonies of our cultural heritage can be found. But because of their high fragility, the public can not get too close to them. In this communication we will explain a project that deals with a physical mock-up of Nantes harbor; the mock-up has been built in 1899 and shown in 1900 for the World's Fair that took place in Paris, France. This heritage object is nowadays at the "Château des Ducs" museum in Nantes, France, but shown behind panes. The object has been digitized and a 3D model has been reconstructed. Thanks to a virtual system coupled to a touchscreen with semantic research modules and to a light pointer, it will allow the visitor to better understand the mock-up and the associated history. Moreover, the system will be user-centered: the visitor will interact directly with the digital mock-up and obviously with all the knowledge that allows the contextualization

Un renouveau des pratiques muséographiques grâce au virtuel : un support à des applications pluridisciplinaire en pédagogie active

National audienceGrand port de la façade Atlantique mais difficile d'accès au fond de l'estuaire de la Loire, Nantes a toujours eu besoin de valoriser son image maritime. A un moment où, grâce à un grand canal latéral, les possibilités de navigation y paraissaient confortées, la Chambre de Commerce de la ville a décidé de commander une maquette du port pour en démontrer les qualités et le dynamisme. Etablie pour l'Exposition Universelle de 1900 dans le cadre du pavillon des chambres de commerce, elle est désormais une pièce maîtresse des collections municipales et est aujourd'hui exposée au sein du Musée du Château des Ducs de Bretagne de Nantes. Le Musée a décidé de valoriser d'un point de vue scientifique et muséographique la maquette du port de Nantes en 1900. Dans le cadre de ce projet pluridisciplinaire de valorisation et de modélisation virtuel de cet objet, un partenariat est mis en place entre plusieurs organismes du bassin nantais et de sa région. Les objectifs sont de modéliser cette maquette et de proposer une forme innovatrice de valorisation muséographique utilisant les dernières technologies de Réalité Virtuelle
