Measurements and Predictions on the Elkhart Greek Culvert
This paper describes field measurements and analysis carried out on the Elkhart Creek soil arch culvert structure in British Columbia, Canada. The structure has a span of 13.4 m, a rise of 7.3 m, and a soil cover of 9.6 m. The original structure collapsed during backfilling in October 1987. A new structure of the same design was built in the Fall of 1989, and because of controversy regarding the design thrust value, it was instrumented to measure thrust, moment, and displacements in the arch. Displacements and stresses in the soil were also measured. The measured thrust values were much lower than expected and indicated that significant positive soil-arching occurred. A nonlinear finite element analysis of the soil-structure system was carried out simulating the construction procedures used, and the computed response compared with the measurements. The computed and observed responses were in reasonable agreement in terms of thrust, moment, displacements and soil stresses provided an allowance was made for slip at the bolted connections
Ultrafast photodoping and effective Fermi-Dirac distribution of the Dirac particles in Bi2Se3
We exploit time- and angle- resolved photoemission spectroscopy to determine
the evolution of the out-of-equilibrium electronic structure of the topological
insulator Bi2Se. The response of the Fermi-Dirac distribution to ultrashort IR
laser pulses has been studied by modelling the dynamics of the hot electrons
after optical excitation. We disentangle a large increase of the effective
temperature T* from a shift of the chemical potential mu*, which is consequence
of the ultrafast photodoping of the conduction band. The relaxation dynamics of
T* and mu* are k-independent and these two quantities uniquely define the
evolution of the excited charge population. We observe that the energy
dependence of the non-equilibrium charge population is solely determined by the
analytical form of the effective Fermi-Dirac distribution.Comment: 5 Pages, 3 Figure
Evidence of reduced surface electron-phonon scattering in the conduction band of Bi_{2}Se_{3} by non-equilibrium ARPES
The nature of the Dirac quasiparticles in topological insulators calls for a
direct investigation of the electron-phonon scattering at the \emph{surface}.
By comparing time-resolved ARPES measurements of the TI Bi_{2}Se_{3} with
different probing depths we show that the relaxation dynamics of the electronic
temperature of the conduction band is much slower at the surface than in the
bulk. This observation suggests that surface phonons are less effective in
cooling the electron gas in the conduction band.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Optical Pulse-Phased Photopolarimetry of PSR B0656+14
We have observed the optical pulse profile of PSR B0656+14 in 10 phase bins
at a high signal-to-noise ratio, and have measured the linear polarization
profile over 30% of the pulsar period with some significance. The pulse profile
is double-peaked, with a bridge of emission between the two peaks, similar to
gamma-ray profiles observed in other pulsars. There is no detectable unpulsed
flux, to a 1-sigma limit of 16% of the pulse-averaged flux. The emission in the
bridge is highly (~ 100%) polarized, with a position angle sweep in excellent
agreement with the prediction of the Rotating Vector Model as determined from
radio polarization observations. We are able to account for the gross features
of the optical light curve (i.e., the phase separation of the peaks) using both
polar cap and outer gap models. Using the polar cap model, we are also able to

Years of RXTE Monitoring of Anomalous X-ray Pulsar 4U 0142+61: Long-Term Variability
We report on 10 years of monitoring of the 8.7-s Anomalous X-ray Pulsar 4U
0142+61 using the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). This pulsar exhibited
stable rotation from 2000 March until 2006 February: the RMS phase residual for
a spin-down model which includes nu, nudot, and nuddot is 2.3%. We report a
possible phase-coherent timing solution valid over a 10-yr span extending back
to March 1996. A glitch may have occured between 1998 and 2000, but is not
required by the existing timing data. The pulse profile has been evolving since
2000. In particular, the dip of emission between its two peaks got shallower
between 2002 and 2006, as if the profile were evolving back to its pre-2000
morphology, following an earlier event, which possibly also included the glitch
suggested by the timing data. These profile variations are seen in the 2-4 keV
band but not in 6-8 keV. We also detect a slow increase in the pulsed flux
between 2002 May and 2004 December, such that it has risen by 36+/-3% over 2.6
years in the 2-10 keV band. The pulsed flux variability and the narrow-band
pulse profile changes present interesting challenges to aspects of the magnetar

Lifestyle and wellbeing: Exploring behavioral and demographic covariates in a large US sample
Using data from a nationally representative sample of 46,179 US adults from the Gallup-Healthways Wellbeing Index, we investigate covariates of four subjective mental wellbeing dimensions spanning evaluative (life satisfaction), positive affective (happiness), negative affective (worry), and eudaimonic wellbeing. Negative covariates were generally more strongly correlated with the four dimensions than positive covariates, with depression, poor health, and loneliness being the greatest negative correlates and excellent health and older age being the greatest positive correlates. We reproduce previous evidence for a “midlife crisis” around age 50 across the four wellbeing dimensions. Notably, although salutogenic behaviors (diet, exercise, socializing) correlated with greater wellbeing, there were diminishing benefits beyond thresholds of about four hours a day spent socializing, four days per week of consuming fruits and vegetables, and four days per week of exercising. Findings suggest that wellbeing is easier lost than gained, underscore the influence that relatively malleable lifestyle factors have on wellbeing, and stress the importance of multidimensional measurement for public policy
Electronic structure of the (111) and (-1-1-1) surfaces of cubic BN: A local-density-functional ab initio study
We present ab initio local-density-functional electronic structure
calculations for the (111) and (-1-1-1) surfaces of cubic BN. The energetically
stable reconstructions, namely the N adatom, N3 triangle models on the (111),
the (2x1), boron and nitrogen triangle patterns on the (-1-1-1) surface are
investigated. Band structure and properties of the surface states are discussed

Purification, characterisation and crystallisation of photosystem II from Thermosynechococcus elongatus cultivated in a new type of photobioreactor
AbstractThe thermophilic cyanobacterium Thermosynechococcus elongatus was cultivated under controlled growth conditions using a new type of photobioreactor, allowing us to optimise growth conditions and the biomass yield. A fast large-scale purification method for monomeric and dimeric photosystem II (PSII) solubilized from thylakoid membranes of this cyanobacterium was developed using fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC). The obtained PSII core complexes (PSIIcc) were analysed for their pigment stoichiometry, photochemical and oxygen evolution activities, as well as lipid and detergent composition. Thirty-six chlorophyll a (Chla), 2 pheophytin a (Pheoa), 9± 1 β-carotene (Car), 2.9±0.8 plastoquinone 9 (PQ9) and 3.8±0.5 Mn were found per active centre. For the monomeric and dimeric PSIIcc, 18 and 20 lipid as well as 145 and 220 detergent molecules were found in the detergent shell, respectively. The monomeric and dimeric complexes showed high oxygen evolution activity with 1/4 O2 released per 37–38 Chla and flash in the best cases. Crystals were obtained from dimeric PSIIcc by a micro-batch method. They diffract synchrotron X-rays to a maximum resolution of 2.9-Å, resulting in complete data sets of 3.2 Å resolution
