    Scale-dependent dynamics: Zooplankton and the stability of freshwater food webs

    The study of freshwater pelagic communities is entering an exciting and controversial phase. Recent efforts to clarify how food web interactions differ from food chain interactions have emphasized the various, often subtle, repercussions of top predators on communities. Predators can modify community structure not only through directly imposed death rates, but also through direct and indirect effects on prey interactions, behavior, life-styles and morphology (e.g. induction of defenses). In some cases, the effects influence ecosystem properties (material fluxes, turnover rates and primary production). Attempts to trace food web impacts in enclosure and lake studies have revealed important time-dependent system properties. Severe resource limitation of fast variables (phytoplankton and small zooplankton) stabilizes lower trophic levels, whereas the potentially destabilizing effects of fish population oscillations are long compared to the growing season and subject to year-to-year climatic vagaries.     Resonant tunnelling into the two-dimensional subbands of InSe layers

    Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) crystals have attracted considerable interest for digital electronics beyond Si-based complementary metal oxide semiconductor technologies. Despite the transformative success of Si-based devices, there are limits to their miniaturization and functionalities. Here we realize a resonant tunnelling transistor (RTT) based on a 2D InSe layer sandwiched between two multi-layered graphene (MLG) electrodes. In the RTT the energy of the quantum-confined 2D subbands of InSe can be tuned by the thickness of the InSe layer. By applying a voltage across the two MLG electrodes, which serve as the source and drain electrodes to the InSe, the chemical potential in the source can be tuned in and out of resonance with a given 2D subband, leading to multiple regions of negative differential conductance that can be additionally tuned by electrostatic gating. This work demonstrates the potential of InSe and InSe-based RTTs for applications in quantum electronics.

    Employability and higher education: contextualising female students' workplace experiences to enhance understanding of employability development

    Current political and economic discourses position employability as a responsibility of higher education, which deploys mechanisms such as supervised work experience (SWE) to embed employability skills development into the undergraduate curriculum. However, workplaces are socially constructed complex arenas of embodied knowledge that are gendered. Understanding the usefulness of SWE therefore requires consideration of the contextualised experiences of it, within these complex environments. This study considers higher education's use of SWE as a mechanism of employability skills development through exploration of female students' experiences of accounting SWE, and its subsequent shaping of their views of employment. Findings suggest that women experience numerous, indirect gender-based inequalities within their accounting SWE about which higher education is silent, perpetuating the framing of employability as a set of individual skills and abilities. This may limit the potential of SWE to provide equality of employability development. The study concludes by briefly considering how insights provided by this research could better inform higher education's engagement with SWE within the employability discourse, and contribute to equality of employability development opportunity

    Environmentally controlled phenotypic plasticity of morphology and polypeptide expression in two populations of Daphnia pulex (Crustacea: cladocera)

    Two local Daphnia pulex populations which are subject to different types of seasonally varying predation pressures were studied. Individuals from both populations were raised in laboratory environments which simulated either summer or winter temperatures and photoperiods. When individuals from the same parthenogenetic clone were raised in different seasonal environments, each clone exhibited phenotypic variation specific to each of the seasonal environments. Intraclonal phenotypic plasticity was found in both populations at two different levels: variation in morphological characters, and variation in the expressed polypeptide phenotypes. Summer environmental conditions induced predator-resistant morphological traits, while winter conditions induced predator-susceptible ones. From 65% to 71% of over 200 major polypeptides were specifically expressed in either one seasonal environment or the other. This is evidence for the existence of environmentally induced switching between alternate developmental programs. Clones from the population with the least year to year predictability of seasonal predation pressure showed more interclonal variation in environment specific phenotypic expression than clones from the more predictably fluctuating environment.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/47754/1/442_2004_Article_BF00379879.pd

    Predation efficiency of Anopheles gambiae larvae by aquatic predators in western Kenya highlands

    Abstract Background The current status of insecticide resistance in mosquitoes and the effects of insecticides on non-target insect species have raised the need for alternative control methods for malaria vectors. Predation has been suggested as one of the important regulation mechanisms for malaria vectors in long-lasting aquatic habitats, but the predation efficiency of the potential predators is largely unknown in the highlands of western Kenya. In the current study, we examined the predation efficiency of five predators on Anopheles gambiae s.s larvae in 24 hour and semi- field evaluations. Methods Predators were collected from natural habitats and starved for 12 hours prior to starting experiments. Preliminary experiments were conducted to ascertain the larval stage most predated by each predator species. When each larval instar was subjected to predation, third instar larvae were predated at the highest rate. Third instar larvae of An. gambiae were introduced into artificial habitats with and without refugia at various larval densities. The numbers of surviving larvae were counted after 24 hours in 24. In semi-field experiments, the larvae were counted daily until they were all either consumed or had developed to the pupal stage. Polymerase chain reaction was used to confirm the presence of An. gambiae DNA in predator guts. Results Experiments found that habitat type (P < 0.0001) and predator species (P < 0.0001) had a significant impact on the predation rate in the 24 hour evaluations. In semi-field experiments, predator species (P < 0.0001) and habitat type (P < 0.0001) were significant factors in both the daily survival and the overall developmental time of larvae. Pupation rates took significantly longer in habitats with refugia. An. gambiae DNA was found in at least three out of ten midguts for all predator species. Gambusia affins was the most efficient, being three times more efficient than tadpoles. Conclusion These experiments provide insight into the efficiency of specific natural predators against mosquito larvae. These naturally occurring predators may be useful in biocontrol strategies for aquatic stage An. gambiae mosquitoes. Further investigations should be done in complex natural habitats for these predators

    Nursing heroism in the 21st Century'

    Abstract Background The Vivian Bullwinkel Oration honours the life and work of an extraordinary nurse. Given her story and that of her World War II colleagues, the topic of nursing heroism in the 21st century could not be more germane. Discussion Is heroism a legitimate part of nursing, or are nurses simply 'just doing their job' even when facing extreme personal danger? In this paper I explore the place and relevance of heroism in contemporary nursing. I propose that nursing heroism deserves a broader appreciation and that within the term lie many hidden, 'unsung' or 'unrecorded' heroisms. I also challenge the critiques of heroism that would condemn it as part of a 'militarisation' of nursing. Finally, I argue that nursing needs to be more open in celebrating our heroes and the transformative power of nursing achievements. Summary The language of heroism may sound quaint by 21st Century standards but nursing heroism is alive and well in the best of our contemporary nursing ethos and practice.</p

    Accessible Data Curation and Analytics for International-Scale Citizen Science Datasets

    The Covid Symptom Study, a smartphone-based surveillance study on COVID-19 symptoms in the population, is an exemplar of big data citizen science. Over 4.7 million participants and 189 million unique assessments have been logged since its introduction in March 2020. The success of the Covid Symptom Study creates technical challenges around effective data curation for two reasons. Firstly, the scale of the dataset means that it can no longer be easily processed using standard software on commodity hardware. Secondly, the size of the research group means that replicability and consistency of key analytics used across multiple publications becomes an issue. We present ExeTera, an open source data curation software designed to address scalability challenges and to enable reproducible research across an international research group for datasets such as the Covid Symptom Study dataset
