    The Largest Blueshifts of [O III] emission line in Two Narrow-Line Quasars

    We have obtained optical intermediate resolution spectra (R = 3000) of the narrow-line quasars DMS 0059-0055 and PG 1543+489. The [O III] emission line in DMS 0059-0055 is blueshifted by 880 km/s relative to Hbeta. We also confirm that the [O III] emission line in PG 1543+489 has a relative blueshift of 1150 km/s. These two narrow-line quasars show the largest [O III] blueshifts known to date among type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The [O III] emission lines in both objects are broad (1000 - 2000 km/s) and those in DMS 0059-0055 show strong blue asymmetry. We interpret the large blueshift and the profile of the [O III] lines as the result of an outflow interacting with circumnuclear gas. Among type 1 AGNs with large blueshifted [O III], there is no correlation between the Eddington ratios and the amount of [O III] blueshifts. Combining our new data with published results, we confirm that the Eddington ratios of the such AGNs are the highest among AGNs with the same black hole masses. These facts suggest that the Eddington ratio is a necessary condition or the [O III] blueshifts weakly depend on the Eddington ratio. Our new sample suggests that there are possible necessary conditions to produce an outflow besides a high Eddington ratio: large black hole mass (> 10^7 M_solar) or high mass accretion rate (> 2 M_solar/yr) or large luminosity (lambda L_{lambda} (5100A) > 10^44.6 erg/s).Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

    The Central Gas Systems of Early-Type Galaxies Traced by Dust Feature: Based on the HST WFPC2 Archival Images

    We investigated the central gas systems of E/S0 galaxies by making use of the WFPC2 images of the Hubble Space Telescope archive. We searched the gas systems that were traced by the dust with a new method of making color excess images in F555W - F814W (V-I). Out of 25 sample galaxies, we detected gas system in 14 galaxies. The dust was newly detected in two galaxies that were thought to contain no dust based on single band, pre-refurbishment data. The full extents of the gas systems are 0.1 to 3.5 kpc, and the masses of the gas, log M(gas) [M(solar)], are 4.2 to 7.2. The AGN activity is well correlated with existence of the gas systems. None of galaxies without the gas systems show the AGN activity. On the other hand, some galaxies with the gas systems show the AGN activity; optical AGN activities are shown in 5 out of 11 galaxies of which AGNs are optically studied, and radio activities are shown in 6 out of 14 galaxies.     Lyman Break Galaxies at z~5: Rest-frame UV Spectra II

    We present the results of spectroscopy of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z~5 in the J0053+1234 field with the Faint Object Camera and Spectrograph on the Subaru telescope. Among 5 bright candidates with z' < 25.0 mag, 2 objects are confirmed to be at z~5 from their Ly alpha emission and the continuum depression shortward of Ly alpha. The EWs of Ly alpha emission of the 2 LBGs are not so strong to be detected as Ly alpha emitters, and one of them shows strong low-ionized interstellar (LIS) metal absorption lines. Two faint objects with z' \geq 25.0 mag are also confirmed to be at z~5, and their spectra show strong Ly alpha emission in contrast to the bright ones. These results suggest a deficiency of strong Ly alpha emission in bright LBGs at z~5, which has been discussed in our previous paper. Combined with our previous spectra of LBGs at z~5 obtained around the Hubble Deep Field-North (HDF-N), we made a composite spectrum of UV luminous (M_1400 \leq -21.5 mag) LBGs at z~5. The resultant spectrum shows a weak Ly alpha emission and strong LIS absorptions which suggests that the bright LBGs at z~5 have chemically evolved at least to ~0.1 solar metallicity. For a part of our sample in the HDF-N region, we obtained near-to-mid infrared data, which constraint stellar masses of these objects. With the stellar mass and the metallicity estimated from LIS absorptions, the metallicities of the LBGs at z~5 tend to be lower than those of the galaxies with the same stellar mass at z \lesssim 2, although the uncertainty is very large.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in PAS

    GRB 100418A: a Long GRB without a Bright Supernova in a High-Metallicity Host Galaxy

    We present results of a search for a supernova (SN) component associated with GRB 100418A at the redshift of 0.624. The field of GRB 100418A was observed with FOCAS on Subaru 8.2m telescope under a photometric condition (seeing 0.3"-0.4") on 2010 May 14 (UT). The date corresponds to 25.6 days after the burst trigger (15.8 days in the restframe). We did imaging observations in V, Rc, and Ic bands, and two hours of spectrophotometric observations. We got the resolved host galaxy image which elongated 1.6" (= 11 kpc) from north to south. No point source was detected on the host galaxy. The time variation of Rc-band magnitude shows that the afterglow of GRB 100418A has faded to Rc \sim > 24 without SN like rebrightening, when we compare our measurement to the reports in GCN circulars. We could not identify any SN feature such as broad emission-lines or bumps in our spectrum. Assuming the SN is fainter than the 3{\sigma} noise spectrum of our observation, we estimate the upper limit on the SN absolute magnitude MIc,obs > -17.2 in observer frame Ic-band. This magnitude is comparable to the faintest type Ic SNe. We also estimate host galaxy properties from the spectrum.
