Misuse of Enduring Powers of Attorney

This paper critically evaluates the Law Commission’s recommendations as presented in the Commission’s report reviewing Part IV of the Protection of Personal Property Rights Act 1988. This legislation defines the scope for enduring powers of attorney (EPAs). The paper advocates that the establishment of a central register for EPAs will be of substantial benefit, as it will provide an effective means of monitoring the use and misuse of EPAs. The paper concentrates on the effects of the current regime on older people, and it interviews six individuals who are actively engaged in work with older people in the Wellington region to identify the main areas of concern surrounding EPAs. The focus of the interviews was developed from the Law Commission’s recommendations against the establishment of a central register. The paper identifies some very real concerns with the current law's ability to curb the misuse of EPAs which leave older people open to abuse. It concludes that the Law Commission needs to re-evaluate the issue of misuse of EPAs as its report does not adequately deal with current flaws in the law

Precision tests of the J/psi from full lattice QCD: mass, leptonic width and radiative decay rate to eta_c

We show results from calculations in full lattice QCD of the mass, leptonic width and radiative decay rate to eta_c of the J/psi meson. These provide few % tests of QCD. Another (1.5%) test comes from comparison of time-moments of the vector charmonium correlator with results derived from the experimental values of R(e+e- to hadrons) in the charm region

Retail-based healthy food point-of-decision prompts (PDPs) increase healthy food choices in a rural, low-income, minority community

This study examines the potential for point-of-decision prompts (PDPs) to promote healthier food choices among shoppers in a rural, low-income, minority community. We hypothesized that a narrowly defined PDP (focused on fresh produce) would be easier for shoppers to remember than a broadly defined PDP (focused on any healthy items), resulting in a higher proportion of healthy items purchased. PDPs were placed at the entrance to a supermarket in Mission, South Dakota, United States of America, on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation for alternating time periods, July 9–10, 2017. Sales records from 653 transactions were retrieved from the supermarket, comprising periods in which PDPs were in place and control periods. We examined the proportion of selected items and proportion of total expenditures that were a) any healthy foods and b) fresh fruits and vegetables. Data were analyzed in 2018. The narrowly defined prompt consistently resulted in a higher proportion of items and expenditures on healthy foods than either the broad prompt or the control condition. Shoppers in the narrow prompt condition purchased and spent significantly more on any healthy foods and fresh produce than shoppers in the control condition. While shoppers in the narrow prompt condition purchased more healthy foods and fresh produce than shoppers in the broad prompt condition, the differences were not statistically significant. Shoppers exposed to the narrow PDP consistently purchased more healthy foods than shoppers in a control group, while shoppers in the broad PDP did not, highlighting the importance of considering cognitive processes when designing health promotion messages

Stress and Coping Experiences of UK Professional Football Managers During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Guided by transactional stress theory, this study aimed to explore elite U.K. soccer coaches’ perceived stressors, the situational properties, appraisals, and coping during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study also aimed to explore any variation in stress experiences across football league standards A total of 13 professional first-team male U.K. association football coaches between 38 and 59 years of age (M = 43.00, SD = 6.94) participated in telephone (n = 5) or online (n = 8) semistructured interviews. Informed by the philosophical position of critical realism, Braun et al.’s six-phase approach to thematic analysis was used to generate competitive, organizational, and personal stressor themes. Deductive thematic analysis generated themes reflective of all situational properties of stressors identified by Lazarus and Folkman and an array of appraisal and coping strategies. Future research and recommendations for supporting coach performance and well-being post-COVID-19 pandemic are offered.<br/

Revitalizing "Forgotten" African American Cemeteries

The degradation, abandonment, and “forgetting� of African American cemeteries have become chronic issues throughout the Southern United States. At their base, these spaces are examples of manipulated landscapes and represent a long history of minimization as the result of an imagined history via the influence of Lost Cause ideology- a negationist ideology which continues to affect the visibility of African American heritage spaces and their contribution to American history. In order to mitigate this manipulation and preserve both historic and contemporary cemetery spaces from further decline, plans for revitalization need to be implemented while simultaneously considering the various terminological, economic, political, and social issues/considerations that are a result of this manipulation. Examples across the South further emphasize the ambiguities of addressing one-sided representations of heritage, culture, and history within the landscape. A current project being conducted by East Carolina University’s Department of Anthropology on a “forgotten� African American cemetery in Ayden, North Carolina serves as a model of action for similar projects seeking to mitigate manipulation and reintroduce these cemeteries into their communities

Foreign Aid

While foreign aid is generally thought of as a positive means to help the poor, in many areas it may do more harm than good. This presentation will provide a review of literature that focuses on the effects of foreign aid on developing economies. This presentation will highlight some harmful examples of global foreign aid by highlighting these examples in several different countries. First, the presentation will discuss the history and development of America’s foreign aid. Secondly, the presentation will highlight the positive and negative effects of foreign policies. Third, the presentation will consider a more recently developed form of foreign aid through supporting locally owned business in developing countries. Lastly, we will emphasize the importance of empowering communities through evidence-based foreign aid practice and provide information on ways to get personally involved
