    Exposing the needs of an invisible community: Queer youth in Kitchener-Waterloo

    Using a participatory action research approach, and a steering committee composed of stakeholders from the community, this thesis focused on identifying the needs of queer youth in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario. Multiple methods were used including focus groups, key informant interviews, and an online survey. A total of 31 participants were involved in this study including youth between the ages of 16 and 25 (who identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, questioning, or unsure), parents of queer youth and other community members. Barriers to queer youth wanting to access resources were addressed and strategies to overcome them are offered. In addition, suggestions for improving existing resources are discussed as well as recommendations for new resources or support services. Findings of this study revealed a severe lack of resources and support in local high schools, no inclusion of queer content in the curriculum, no safe space campaigns, and a general resistance to address the issue of supporting queer students. Finding relating to the two universities (Wilfrid Laurier University and University of Waterloo) suggested a need for a safe space campaign and increased community advertising of the services offered by the queer university groups. In the community, there are no safe spaces for underage queer youth to socialize, and no control location for queer youth to access information, resources, or support. The development of a queer community centre and queer youth drop-in centre was strongly recommended by participants. Main themes of the research centered on issues of visibility of queer resources and the queer community, as well as the significance of safety and acceptance in meeting the needs of queer youth. Recommendations are made for actions to be taken in high schools, universities, and in the community

    Injury Rates and Characteristics Associated with Participation in Organized Dance Education:A Systematic Review

    Introduction: Several studies and recent systematic reviews have investigated injury in dance settings and have largely focused on specific concert dance genres (i.e., ballet, contemporary) and elite levels (i.e., pre-professional, professional) of dance. Less is known about the health of those who participate in dance education settings, namely teachers and students from private dance studios. Given that these individuals constitute a large proportion of the dance community, greater clarity of risks in the dance training environment could benefit an underserved majority by informing the development of effective injury prevention strategies.Objective: The primary objective was to describe injury rates and characteristics associated with participation in organized dance education settings.Methods: Six electronic databases were searched to April 2021 (Medline, EMBASE, SportDiscus, CINAHL, SCOPUS, Cochrane). Selected studies met a priori inclusion criteria that required original data from dance teacher and student samples within formal dance education settings. All genres of dance were eligible. Studies were excluded if no injury outcomes or estimates of dance exposure were reported, if injuries occurred during rehearsal and performance, or if dance was used as a therapeutic intervention or exercise. Two reviewers independently assessed each paper for inclusion at abstract and full text screening stages. The quality of included studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Level of Evidence tool.Results: The initial database search identified 1,424 potentially relevant records, 26 were included and scored. Most studies (n = 22) focused on dance students only, three included only dance teachers, and one study included both. Among both dance students and teachers, the majority of injuries reported were overuse or chronic and involved the lower limb. For studies that reported injury rates (n = 14), estimates ranged from 0.8 to 4.7 injuries per 1,000 dance hours, 4.86 per 1,000 dancer-days, and 0.21 to 0.34 per 1,000 dance exposures.Conclusions: Based on the current research, dance students and teachers experience a similar rate of injury to concert and professional dancers, and their injuries are most commonly overuse injuries involving the lower extremity. There have been few high-quality investigations of injury specific to the dance training environment. Therefore, consensus around the burden of injury in the dance education settings remains difficult. Future dance epidemiological investigations that examine the burden of injury among dance teachers and students, include operational injury and exposure definitions, and utilize prospective designs are warranted.<br/

    65 million years ago, the dinosaurs were exterminated. Today more than 6 billion people depend primarily on non-renewable resources for survival. What many fail to recognize is that burning fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gas, is reaching a dead end and also has debilitating immediate effects on our surroundings. The “environment” is no longer limited to species’ natural habitat, where one solely imagines the seven biomes. Instead it encompasses human interaction within the biotic, abiotic, cultural, and social worlds. Dirty energy sources are a major example of how humans drastically alter not only the physical environment, but the economy as well. While the increase of forest fires, heat waves, droughts, floods, heavy precipitation and disease is a reality for most, others still deem Global Warming as a myth. In order to make the Earth’s population more aware of these dramatic consequences and how to contribute to avoiding them, mobile technology can play an important role. Mobile technology comprises mobile applications, (iPhone, Android, Blackberry or Java ME), mobile web sites, SMS and voice solutions. Mobile phones are always at an arm distance of their owners and have the potential to reach masses of people and thus, make a difference. More specifically, they can be used to educate users about anything related to going green in an entertaining or serious way, on the fly or in a studious environment.     Effectiveness of antiarrhythmic drugs for shockable cardiac arrest : a systematic review

    Purpose The purpose of this systematic review is to provide up-to-date evidence on effectiveness of antiarrhythmic drugs for shockable cardiac arrest to help inform the 2018 International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation Consensus on Science with Treatment Recommendations. Methods A search was conducted in electronic databases Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Library from inception to August 15, 2017. Results Of the 9371 citations reviewed, a total of 14 RCTs and 17 observational studies met our inclusion criteria for adult population and only 1 observational study for pediatric population. Based on RCT level evidence for adult population, none of the anti-arrhythmic drugs showed any difference in effect compared with placebo, or with other anti-arrhythmic drugs for the critical outcomes of survival to hospital discharge and discharge with good neurological function. For the outcome of return of spontaneous circulation, the results showed a significant increase for lidocaine compared with placebo (RR = 1.16; 95% CI, 1.03–1.29, p = 0.01). Conclusion The high level evidence supporting the use of antiarrhythmic drugs during CPR for shockable cardiac arrest is limited and showed no benefit for critical outcomes of survival at hospital discharge, survival with favorable neurological function and long-term survival. Future high quality research is needed to confirm these findings and also to evaluate the role of administering antiarrhythmic drugs in children with shockable cardiac arrest, and in adults immediately after ROSC

    Understanding how education/support groups help lone mothers

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Lone-mother led families are at increased risk of psychosocial disadvantage, social isolation and mental health morbidity. Community-based programs are more accessible for families seeking assistance. We examine the experiences of eight lone mothers participating in a larger randomized controlled trial (RCT) of a community-based education/support group program using mixed methods.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A purposeful sample of eight mothers participating in the intervention arm of an RCT of community-based support/education groups was selected for the qualitative study. Individual interviews asked mothers about themselves and their relationships with their children before and after the group. Interviews were taped, transcribed and content analysis was used to code and interpret the data. Quantitative data collected in the RCT were used to describe these mothers.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Mothers participating in the RCT and qualitative study experienced multiple difficulties, including financial and mood problems. These mothers reported that before participating in the group, they had shared experiences of social isolation, stigma, a sense of failure, poor relationships with their children and difficulties with financial management. After the group, mothers identified improved self-esteem, support from other mothers, improved parenting skills and improved communication with their children as outcomes of group participation.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The qualitative data revealed mothers' perceptions of specific areas that improved by participating in the group. The utility of complementary information provided by qualitative and quantitative methods in understanding program impact, as well as the need for broader assistance is noted.</p

    Providing web-based mental health services to at-risk women

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>We examined the feasibility of providing web-based mental health services, including synchronous internet video conferencing of an evidence-based support/education group, to at-risk women, specifically poor lone mothers. The objectives of this study were to: (i) adapt a face-to-face support/education group intervention to a web-based format for lone mothers, and (ii) evaluate lone mothers' response to web-based services, including an online video conferencing group intervention program.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Participating mothers were recruited through advertisements. To adapt the face-to-face intervention to a web-based format, we evaluated participant motivation through focus group/key informant interviews (n = 7), adapted the intervention training manual for a web-based environment and provided a computer training manual. To evaluate response to web-based services, we provided the intervention to two groups of lone mothers (n = 15). Pre-post quantitative evaluation of mood, self-esteem, social support and parenting was done. Post intervention follow up interviews explored responses to the group and to using technology to access a health service. Participants received $20 per occasion of data collection. Interviews were taped, transcribed and content analysis was used to code and interpret the data. Adherence to the intervention protocol was evaluated.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Mothers participating in this project experienced multiple difficulties, including financial and mood problems. We adapted the intervention training manual for use in a web-based group environment and ensured adherence to the intervention protocol based on viewing videoconferencing group sessions and discussion with the leaders. Participant responses to the group intervention included decreased isolation, and increased knowledge and confidence in themselves and their parenting; the responses closely matched those of mothers who obtained same service in face-to-face groups. Pre-and post-group quantitative evaluations did not show significant improvements on measures, although the study was not powered to detect these.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We demonstrated that an evidence-based group intervention program for lone mothers developed and evaluated in face-to-face context transferred well to an online video conferencing format both in terms of group process and outcomes.</p

    Human Integrin α3β1 Regulates TLR2 Recognition of Lipopeptides from Endosomal Compartments

    Toll-like receptor (TLR)-2/TLR1 heterodimers recognize bacterial lipopeptides and initiate the production of inflammatory mediators. Adaptors and co-receptors that mediate this process, as well as the mechanisms by which these adaptors and co-receptors function, are still being discovered.Using shRNA, blocking antibodies, and fluorescent microscopy, we show that U937 macrophage responses to the TLR2/1 ligand, Pam(3)CSK(4), are dependent upon an integrin, α(3)β(1). The mechanism for integrin α(3)β(1) involvement in TLR2/1 signaling is through its role in endocytosis of lipopeptides. Using inhibitors of endosomal acidification/maturation and physical tethering of the ligand, we show that the endocytosis of Pam(3)CSK(4) is necessary for the complete TLR2/1-mediated pro-inflammatory cytokine response. We also show that TLR2/1 signaling from the endosome results in the induction of different inflammatory mediators than TLR2/1 signaling from the plasma membrane.Here we identify integrin α(3)β(1) as a novel regulator for the recognition of bacterial lipopeptides. We demonstrate that induction of a specific subset of cytokines is dependent upon integrin α(3)β(1)-mediated endocytosis of the ligand. In addition, we address an ongoing controversy regarding endosomal recognition of bacterial lipopeptides by demonstrating that TLR2/1 signals from within endosomal compartments as well as the plasma membrane, and that downstream responses may differ depending upon receptor localization. We propose that the regulation of endosomal TLR2/1 signaling by integrin α(3)β(1) serves as a mechanism for modulating inflammatory responses

    Einfluss der Verarbeitungstechnologie und Werkstoffzusammensetzung auf die Struktur-Eigenschafts-Beziehungen von thermoplastischen Nanoverbundwerkstoffen

    Die Einarbeitung von nanoskaligen Füllstoffen zur Steigerung von polymeren Eigenschaftsprofilen ist sehr viel versprechend und stößt daher heutzutage sowohl in der Forschung als auch in der Industrie auf großes Interesse. Bedingt durch ausgeprägte Oberflächen und hohe Anziehungskräfte, liegen Nanopartikel allerdings nicht singulär sondern als Partikelanhäufungen, so genannten Agglomeraten oder Aggregaten, vor. Zur Erzielung der gewünschten Materialverbesserungen gilt es, diese aufzuspalten und homogen in der polymeren Matrix zu verteilen. Bei thermoplastischen Kunststoffen ist die gleichläufige Doppelschneckenextrusion eines der gängigsten Verfahren zur Einarbeitung von Additiven und Füllstoffen. Aus diesem Grund war es Ziel dieser Arbeit, mittels dieses Verfahrens verbesserte Verbundwerkstoffe mit Polyamid 66- und Polyetheretherketon-Matrix, durch Einarbeitung von nanoskaligem Titandioxid (15 und 300 nm), zu generieren. In einem ersten Schritt wurden die verfahrenstechnischen Parameter, wie Drehzahl und Durchsatz, sowie die Prozessführung und damit deren Einfluss auf die Materialeigenschaften beleuchtet. Der spezifische Energieeintrag ist ausschlaggebend zur Deagglomeration der Nanopartikel. Dieser zeigte leichte Abhängigkeiten von der Drehzahl und dem Durchsatz und verursachte bei der Einarbeitung der Partikel keine wesentlichen Unterschiede in der Aufspaltung der Partikel sowie gar keine in den resultierenden mechanischen Eigenschaften. Die Prozessführung wurde unterteilt in Mehrfach- und Einfachextrusion. Die Herstellung eines hochgefüllten Masterbatches, dessen mehrfaches Extrudieren und anschließendes Verdünnen, führte zu einer sehr guten Deagglomeration und stark verbesserten Materialeigenschaften. Mittels Simulation des Extrusionsprozesses konnte festgestellt werden, dass das Vorhandensein von ungeschmolzenem Granulat in der Verfahrenszone zu einer Schmelze/Nanopartikel/ Feststoffreibung führt, die die Ursache für eine sehr gute Aufspaltung der Partikel zu sein scheint. Durch Modifikation des Extrusionsprozesses erreichte die Einfachextrusion annähernd den Grad an Deagglomeration bei Mehrfachextrusion, wobei die Materialien bei letzterem Verfahren die besten Eigenschaftsprofile aufwiesen. In einem zweiten Schritt wurde ein Vergleich der Einflüsse von unterschiedlichen Partikelgrößen und –gehalten auf die polymeren Matrizes vollzogen. Die 15 nm Partikel zeigten signifikant bessere mechanische Ergebnisse auf als die 300 nm Partikel, und die Wirkungsweise des 15 nm Partikels auf Polyetheretherketon war stärker als auf Polyamid 66. Es konnten Steigerungen in Steifigkeit, Festigkeit und Zähigkeit erzielt werden. Rasterelektronenmikroskopische Aufnahmen bestätigten diese Ergebnisse. Eine Berechnung der Plan-Selbstkosten von einem Kilogramm PEEK-Nanoverbundwerkstoff im Vergleich zu einem Kilogramm unverstärktem PEEK verdeutlichte, dass ein Material kreiert wurde, welches deutlich verbesserte Eigenschaften bei gleichem Preis aufweist. Zusammenfassend konnte in dieser Arbeit ein tieferes Verständnis des Extrusionsvorganges zur Herstellung von kostengünstigen und verbesserten Thermoplasten durch das Einbringen von Nanopartikeln gewonnen werden
