Theology at the coal-face of hospitalisation - the development and evaluation of a postgraduate certificate in Healthcare Chaplaincy
Healthcare chaplaincy is working towards recognition as a registered health profession. An accredited programme of professional education is part of that process. The University of Glasgow supported by NHS Education for Scotland have developed a programme of professional education for healthcare chaplains that is integrated into an MSc. (MedSci) in healthcare. This article outlines the commissioning, development and evaluation of a postgraduate certificate in healthcare chaplaincy by students, clinical mentors and experienced healthcare chaplains. It also highlights an innovative approach to practice development in spiritual and religious care in healthcare
Computing the Loewner driving process of random curves in the half plane
We simulate several models of random curves in the half plane and numerically
compute their stochastic driving process (as given by the Loewner equation).
Our models include models whose scaling limit is the Schramm-Loewner evolution
(SLE) and models for which it is not. We study several tests of whether the
driving process is Brownian motion. We find that just testing the normality of
the process at a fixed time is not effective at determining if the process is
Brownian motion. Tests that involve the independence of the increments of
Brownian motion are much more effective. We also study the zipper algorithm for
numerically computing the driving function of a simple curve. We give an
implementation of this algorithm which runs in a time O(N^1.35) rather than the
usual O(N^2), where N is the number of points on the curve.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures. Changes to second version: added new paragraph

The muddled middle of management
In management, there are rather simple principles that impact the work on an individual basis as well as simple principles on a large scale that define a company’s organizational basis. Yet much available management material focuses on the activities at the scale of middle managers, though it is not entirely clear it creates the desired effect or pushes organizations in the right direction. Process changes aimed at the muddled middle incur costs to implement and often offer no clear indication that a benefit equivalent to the cost was realized. Such initiatives and corresponding data can bog down organizations

Multiplexed Memory-Insensitive Quantum Repeaters
Long-distance quantum communication via distant pairs of entangled quantum
bits (qubits) is the first step towards more secure message transmission and
distributed quantum computing. To date, the most promising proposals require
quantum repeaters to mitigate the exponential decrease in communication rate
due to optical fiber losses. However, these are exquisitely sensitive to the
lifetimes of their memory elements. We propose a multiplexing of quantum nodes
that should enable the construction of quantum networks that are largely
insensitive to the coherence times of the quantum memory elements.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. Accepted for publication in PR
Effect of a Spin-1/2 Impurity on the Spin-1 Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chain
Low-lying excited states as well as the ground state of the spin-1 antiferro-
magnetic Heisenberg chain with a spin-1/2 impurity are investigated by means of
a variational method and a method of numerical diagonalization. It is shown
that 1) the impurity spin brings about massive modes in the Haldane gap, 2)
when the the impurity-host coupling is sufficiently weak, the phenomenological
Hamiltonian used by Hagiwara {\it et al.} in the analysis of ESR experimental
results for NENP containing a small amount of spin-1/2 Cu impurities is
equivalent to a more realistic Hamiltonian, as far as the energies of the
low-lying states are concerned, 3) the results obtained by the variational
method are in semi-quantitatively good agreement with those obtained by the
numerical diagonalization.Comment: 11 pages, plain TeX (Postscript figures are included), KU-CCS-93-00
Remarks on geometric entropy
The recently discussed notion of geometric entropy is shown to be related to
earlier calculations of thermal effects in Rindler space. The evaluation is
extended to de Sitter space and to a two-dimensional black hole.Comment: 7p.,uses jyTeX,MUTP/94/
Entanglement of remote atomic qubits
We report observations of entanglement of two remote atomic qubits, achieved
by generating an entangled state of an atomic qubit and a single photon at Site
A, transmitting the photon to Site B in an adjacent laboratory through an
optical fiber, and converting the photon into an atomic qubit. Entanglement of
the two remote atomic qubits is inferred by performing, locally, quantum state
transfer of each of the atomic qubits onto a photonic qubit and subsequent
measurement of polarization correlations in violation of the Bell inequality
|S| <2. We experimentally determine S =2.16 +/- 0.03. Entanglement of two
remote atomic qubits, each qubit consisting of two independent spin wave
excitations, and reversible, coherent transfer of entanglement between matter
and light, represent important advances in quantum information science.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
CPT- and B-Violation: The p-pbar Sector
The CPT symmetry of relativistic quantum field theory requires the total
lifetimes of particles and antiparticles be equal. Detection of pbar lifetime
shorter than tau_p > O(10^32) yr would signal breakdown of CPT invariance, in
combination with B-violation. The best current limit on tau_pbar, inferred from
cosmic ray measurements, is about one Myr, placing lower limits on
CPT-violating scales that depend on the exact mechanism. Paths to CPT breakdown
within and outside ordinary quantum mechanics are sketched. Many of the
limiting CPT-violating scales in pbar decay lie within the weak-to-Planck
range.Comment: 6 pages, LaTeX, .sty file included; based on contribution to CPT98
