    Do radiological research articles apply the term "pilot study" correctly? Systematic review

    AIM: To determine what proportion of radiological studies used the term "pilot" correctly. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Indexed studies describing themselves as a "pilot" in their title were identified from four indexed radiological journals. The aim was to identify 20 consecutive, eligible studies from each journal, as this sample size was deemed sufficient to be representative as to how this methodological description was employed by authors of radiological articles. Data were extracted relating to study design and data presented. The review was reported according to PRISMA guidelines. RESULTS: The search string used identified 658 records across the four targeted journals. Ultimately, 78 reviews describing 5,572 patients were selected for systematic review. Median sample size was just 20 patients. No individual study qualified as a genuine pilot study when assessed against the a priori criteria. In reality, the large majority (66 studies, 84.6%) were framed as studies of diagnostic test accuracy. A significant proportion (21 studies, 26.9%) was retrospective, and the overwhelming majority were conducted in single centres (76 centres, 94.7%). Most (55 studies, 70.5%) stated no rationale for their sample size, and no study presented a formal power calculation. CONCLUSION: Radiological "pilot" studies are mostly underpowered studies of diagnostic test accuracy. In order to have scientific credibility, authors, reviewers, and editors of radiological journals are encouraged to familiarise themselves with different methodological study designs and their precise implications

    Invasive alien species (IAS) can drive community change through ecological interactions. Parasites and pathogens can play an important role in community function including mitigating or enhancing IAS impacts. Despite this, the degree to which pathogen pressure influences IAS impacts remains poorly understood. We quantified the predatory behaviour of the highly invasive alien harlequin ladybird (Harmonia axyridis) and two UK native species, the 7-spot (Coccinella septempunctata) and 2-spot (Adalia bipunctata) ladybirds, using comparative functional response experiments. We investigated the impacts of pathogen infection on the predatory ability of the ladybirds by exposing individuals to Beauveria bassiana, a widespread entomopathogen. Invasive H. axyridis was a more efficient predator than both the native A. bipunctata and C. septempunctata, often having higher attack and/or lower prey handling time coefficients, whereas native A. bipunctata were the least efficient predators. These differences were found in both adult and larval life-stages. Beauveria bassiana infection significantly altered the predatory efficiency of adult and larval ladybird predators. The effects of pathogenic infection differed between species and life-stage but in many cases infection resulted in a reduced predatory ability. We suggest that the interactions between IAS and pathogens are integral to determining invasion success and impact

    Inter-Organizational Networks and Third Sector: Emerging Features from Two Case Studies in Southern Italy

    Social Network Analysis is a useful technique for studying emergent behaviours of cooperation, intervention and governance in inter-organizational networks. In this work, an empirical study of two networks of organizations operating in local territories in Southern Italy and focusing on Third Sector and welfare activities is presented. The actors are committed to experimenting a model of coordinated intervention induced by two corresponding egos which are local Caritas centres. The nodes of the two graphs are determined by combining ego- network and whole-network approaches. The weighted edges representing mutual knowledge and collaboration between nodes are determined through interviews with all actors of the local groups. It is shown that metric properties of the networks can be useful indicators to monitor and evaluate endogenous features, e.g. relational and structural embeddedness, and exogenous features characterized by homophilic mechanisms. The analysis provides insights on the networks governance of the social interacting organizations and reliable descriptors of the social processes that govern their functioning
