    Combined electrical resistivity tomography and ground penetrating radar to map Eurasian badger (Meles Meles) burrows in clay-rich flood embankments (levees)

    Globally, earth embankments are used to protect against flooding. Raised above the surrounding water table, these embankments make ideal habitats for many burrowing animals whose burrows can impact their structural integrity. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is commonly used to identify and map animal burrows and other small cavities. However, the depth of investigation of a GPR survey can be severely limited in saline and clay-rich environments, soil properties commonly associated with flood embankments. In contrast, Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) can image subsurface voids in conductive ground conditions but has been rarely used to image animal burrows. Here we aim to assess the efficacy of ERT and GPR to image two badger burrow networks, called ‘setts’, located in clay embankments on the River Ouse, Yorkshire, UK. The two setts were excavated to validate the geophysical results, and the soil was characterised through logging and geotechnical analysis to develop a ground model of the site. We find that ERT can accurately resolve tunnels down to 1.5 m depth, map the structure of a multi-entrance badger sett and successfully identify the end of the tunnels. This result compares favourably to the GPR surveys, which mapped all but the deepest tunnels, limited by its penetration depth due to clay soils. Our results show that ERT can be used as a primary survey tool for animal burrows in clay-rich environments and can be validated using co-located GPR surveys if penetration depth is sufficient. The implications of this study may allow embankment managers to map burrow networks, assess flood embankment stability, minimise repair costs, and reduce unexpected failures during flood events. Additionally, a better understanding of how, for example, local heterogeneities impact badgers' burrow geometry may be achievable using these geophysical methods, as they provide a non-destructive, repeatable method for imaging setts

    Do film festivals attract tourists?

    Hosting film festivals has become a prevailing practice to promote culture or festival tourism. Empirical studies on the relationship between cultural attendance and tourism demands, however, were mainly comprised of investigations of data of one or very few countries. In this study, by conducting dynamic panel data analysis, with secondary data across 80 countries collected, the effects of hosting film festivals on the number of inbound tourists were examined. While results informed the economic value of hosting film festivals, the positive effect was found to be more significant when festivals were hosted in art countries

    Trajectories and predictors of response in youth anxiety CBT:Integrative data analysis

    OBJECTIVE: Integrative data analysis was used to combine existing data from nine trials of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for anxious youth (N = 832) and identify trajectories of symptom change and predictors of trajectories.METHOD: Youth- and parent-reported anxiety symptoms were combined using item-response theory models. Growth mixture modeling assessed for trajectories of treatment response across pre-, mid-, and posttreatment and 1-year follow-up. Pretreatment client demographic and clinical traits and treatment modality (individual- and family-based CBT) were examined as predictors of trajectory classes.RESULTS: Growth mixture modeling supported three trajectory classes based on parent-reported symptoms: steady responders, rapid responders, and delayed improvement. A 4-class model was supported for youth-reported symptoms: steady responders, rapid responders, delayed improvement, and low-symptom responders. Delayed improvement classes were predicted by higher number of diagnoses (parent and youth report). Receiving family CBT predicted membership in the delayed improvement class compared to all other classes and membership in the steady responder class compared with rapid responders (youth report). Rapid responders were predicted by older age (parent report) and higher number of diagnoses (parent report). Low-symptom responders were more likely to be male (youth report).CONCLUSIONS: Integrative data analysis identified distinct patterns of symptom change.     A Sensor Package for Mapping pH and Oxygen from Mobile Platforms

    A novel chemical sensor package named “WavepHOx” was developed in order to facilitate measurement of surface ocean pH, dissolved oxygen, and temperature from mobile platforms. The system comprises a Honeywell Durafet pH sensor, Aanderaa optode oxygen sensor, and chloride ion selective electrode, packaged into a hydrodynamic, lightweight housing. The WavepHOx has been deployed on a stand-up paddleboard and a Liquid Robotics Wave Glider in multiple near-shore settings in the Southern California Bight. Integration of the WavepHOx into these mobile platforms has enabled high spatiotemporal resolution pH and dissolved oxygen data collection. It is a particularly valuable tool for mapping shallow, fragile, or densely vegetated ecosystems which cannot be easily accessed by other platforms. Results from three surveys in San Diego, California, are reported. We show pH and dissolved oxygen variability \u3e0.3 and \u3e50% saturation, respectively, over tens to hundreds of meters to highlight the degree of natural spatial variability in these vegetated ecosystems. When deployed during an extensive discrete sampling program, the WavepHOx pH had a root mean squared error of 0.028 relative to pH calculated from fifty six measurements of total alkalinity and dissolved inorganic carbon, confirming its capacity for accurate, high spatiotemporal resolution data collection

    Age-dependent effect of apolipoprotein E4 on functional outcome after controlled cortical impact in mice

    The apolipoprotein E4 (APOE4) gene leads to increased brain amyloid beta (AÎČ) and poor outcome in adults with traumatic brain injury (TBI); however, its role in childhood TBI is controversial. We hypothesized that the transgenic expression of human APOE4 worsens the outcome after controlled cortical impact (CCI) in adult but not immature mice. Adult and immature APOE4 mice had worse motor outcome after CCI (P<0.001 versus wild type (WT)), but the Morris water maze performance was worse only in adult APOE4 mice (P=0.028 at 2 weeks, P=0.019 at 6 months versus WT), because immature APOE4 mice had performance similar to WT for up to 1 year after injury. Brain lesion size was similar in adult APOE4 mice but was decreased (P=0.029 versus WT) in injured immature APOE4 mice. Microgliosis was similar in all groups. Soluble brain AÎČ40 was increased at 48 hours after CCI in adult and immature APOE4 mice and in adult WT (P<0.05), and was dynamically regulated during the chronic period by APOE4 in adults but not immature mice. The data suggest age-dependent effects of APOE4 on cognitive outcome after TBI, and that therapies targeting APOE4 may be more effective in adults versus children with TBI
