Spontaneous Generation of Photons in Transmission of Quantum Fields in PT Symmetric Optical Systems
We develop a rigorous mathematically consistent description of PT symmetric
optical systems by using second quantization. We demonstrate the possibility of
significant spontaneous generation of photons in PT symmetric systems. Further
we show the emergence of Hanbury-Brown Twiss (HBT) correlations in spontaneous
generation. We show that the spontaneous generation determines decisively the
nonclassical nature of fields in PT symmetric systems. Our work can be applied
to other systems like plasmonic structure where losses are compensated by gain
mechanisms.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Ramsey spectroscopy with squeezed light
Traditional Ramsey spectroscopy has the frequency resolution , where
is the time separation between two light fields. Using squeezed states and
two-atom excitation joint detection, we present a new scheme achieving a higher
resolution . We use two mode squeezed light which exhibits strong
entanglement
A cryogenic surface-electrode elliptical ion trap for quantum simulation
Two-dimensional crystals of trapped ions are a promising system with which to
implement quantum simulations of challenging problems such as spin frustration.
Here, we present a design for a surface-electrode elliptical ion trap which
produces a 2-D ion crystal and is amenable to microfabrication, which would
enable higher simulated coupling rates, as well as interactions based on
magnetic forces generated by on-chip currents. Working in an 11 K cryogenic
environment, we experimentally verify to within 5% a numerical model of the
structure of ion crystals in the trap. We also explore the possibility of
implementing quantum simulation using magnetic forces, and calculate J-coupling
rates on the order of 10^3 / s for an ion crystal height of 10 microns, using a
current of 1 A
Interrogating the void : the difficulty of extracting information from many-body systems
Thesis (S.B.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Physics, 2011.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 53-54).In this thesis, I will explore some of the ways the information-theoretic properties of quantum many-body systems can be analyzed. I do this in two different settings. First, I will describe an approach to the "scrambling time problem," a conjecture of Susskind and Sekino that asserts that black holes can thermalize the information of objects that are dropped into them at the fastest rate consistent with unitarity. Specifically, I will analyze the dynamics of the Iizuka-Polchinksi model, a matrix model of a black hole whose response functions can be calculated exactly. Second, I will study the average information content of subsystems of a larger system. In particular, I will improve a result of Page giving the average entanglement entropy of such a subsystem in the ensemble of random, Haar-distributed states by refining it to a smaller, more physically relevant ensemble of states known as "matrix product states," which encode a notion of locality. In both these examples, fundamental obstacles arise that impede our analysis; I explain how these roadblocks are related to the difficulty of understanding the interactions between the exponentially large number the degrees of freedom such many-body systems contain.by Kenan S. Paghilom: A Narrative Analysis of the Healing testimonials of The Mary, Mediatrix of All Grace Devotees in Facebook Groups
Popular Religiosity is deeply embedded in the Philippine culture, especially devotions to arguably the most venerated figure in the Philippines, the Virgin Mary. The Our Lady of Mediatrix of all Grace is just one of the several figures of Mary, highly revered and honored by the people in Lipa, Batangas. With the advent of COVID19, testimonies of healing attributed to this patroness have emerged in Facebook devotional groups, an attestation to the faith of her devotees. The aim of this research is to look into the narrative categories of these testimonies through the use of Narrative Analysis. The data garnered are 10 video testimonies from the devotees of Our Lady Mediatrix of All Grace, posted at selected Facebook devotional groups. In the end, the researchers have generated five narrative categories that are present within the healing testimonies, namely: Pagsubok, Pagkilala, Pamamanata, Paggaling, and Pagpapatotoo to these miraculous experiences. These narrative categories will not just add to the existing body of literature about the devotion to Our Lady of Mediatrix of All Grace and the message of hope within these testimonies, but also Popular Religiosity within the Philippine context
