    A modulation property of time-frequency derivatives of filtered phase and its application to aperiodicity and fo estimation

    We introduce a simple and linear SNR (strictly speaking, periodic to random power ratio) estimator (0dB to 80dB without additional calibration/linearization) for providing reliable descriptions of aperiodicity in speech corpus. The main idea of this method is to estimate the background random noise level without directly extracting the background noise. The proposed method is applicable to a wide variety of time windowing functions with very low sidelobe levels. The estimate combines the frequency derivative and the time-frequency derivative of the mapping from filter center frequency to the output instantaneous frequency. This procedure can replace the periodicity detection and aperiodicity estimation subsystems of recently introduced open source vocoder, YANG vocoder.     Fission yeast cells overproducing HSET/KIFC1 provides a useful tool for identification and evaluation of human kinesin-14 inhibitors

    Many human cancer cells contain more than two centrosomes, yet these cancer cells can form pseudo-bipolar spindles through the mechanism, called centrosome clustering, and survive, instead of committing lethal multipolar mitoses. Kinesin-14/HSET, a minus end-directed motor, plays a crucial role in centrosome clustering. Accordingly, HSET is deemed to be a promising chemotherapeutic target to selectively kill cancer cells. Recently, three HSET inhibitors (AZ82, CW069 and SR31527) have been reported, but their specificity and efficacy have not been evaluated rigorously. This downside partly stems from the lack of robust systems for the assessment of these drugs. Yeasts and filamentous fungi provide not only powerful models for basic and applied biology but also versatile tools for drug discovery and evaluation. Here we show that these three inhibitors on their own are cytotoxic to fission yeast, suggesting that they have off-targets in vivo except for kinesin-14. Nonetheless, intriguingly, AZ82 can neutralize otherwise toxic overproduced HSET; this includes a substantial reduction in the percentage of HSET-driven abnormal mitotic cells and partial suppression of its lethality. SR31527 also displays modest neutralizing activity, while we do not detect such activity in CW069. As an experimental proof-of-principle study, we have treated HSET-overproducing fission yeast cells with extracts prepared from various plant species and found activities that rescue HSET-driven lethality in those from Chamaecyparis pisifera and Toxicodendron trichocarpum.     Complexiton Solutions of the Toda Lattice Equation

    A set of coupled conditions consisting of differential-difference equations is presented for Casorati determinants to solve the Toda lattice equation. One class of the resulting conditions leads to an approach for constructing complexiton solutions to the Toda lattice equation through the Casoratian formulation. An analysis is made for solving the resulting system of differential-difference equations, thereby providing the general solution yielding eigenfunctions required for forming complexitons. Moreover, a feasible way is presented to compute the required eigenfunctions, along with examples of real complexitons of lower order.Comment: 21 pages, Latex, to appear in Physica

    First record of Acartia japonica Mori, 1940 (Copepoda, Calanoida) from Sagami Bay, the Pacific coast of Japan

    The occurrence of the calanoid copepod Acartia japonica Mori, 1940 is reported for the first time from the Pacific coastal waters of Honshu, Japan. The species was first found in 2013, and subsequently in 2014, 2015 and 2016, at Manazuru Port in Sagami Bay. The seasonal appearance of the species was limited to the period from summer to autumn. The maximum abundance reached 362.6 individuals m−3 in September 2015. Its continuous occurrence in every warm season suggests successful establishment of the population at Manazuru Port.Short Not
