    A sustainable way of agricultural livelihood: edible bird’s nests in Indonesia

    Edible birds’ nests (EBNs) have traditionally been produced in Southeast Asia. Indonesian farmers construct buildings for swiftlets and harvest their nests. EBN farming does not directly degrade forest resources and is therefore considered a sustainable means of production, whereas the expansion of other agricultural activities often relies on the degradation of natural resources. This study examines the relationship between natural resources and agricultural livelihoods, focusing on Indonesian EBN farmers. Using survey data that we ollected in 2017, combined with satellite information on the extent of the forest in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, we measured production efficiency and identified the natural and social factors that enhance production performance. The results show that a forest extent ranging between 2,000 and 6,000 meters from nesting building is positively associated with the production efficiency of EBN farming, perhaps because extensive forest could help swiftlets to collect food and build nests. Conversely, while EBN farming is a sustainable and profitable option, the initial costs of constructing buildings to house swiftlets may deter farmers from participating in the process

    Large-scale mapping observations of the CI(3P1-3P0) and CO(J=3-2) lines toward the Orion A molecular cloud

    Large scale mapping observations of the 3P1-3P0 fine structure transition of atomic carbon (CI, 492 GHz) and the J=3-2 transition of CO (346 GHz) toward the Orion A molecular cloud have been carried out with the Mt. Fuji submillimeter-wave telescope. The observations cover 9 square degrees, and include the Orion nebula M42 and the L1641 dark cloud complex. The CI emission extends over almost the entire region of the Orion A cloud and is surprisingly similar to that of 13CO(J=1-0).The CO(J=3-2) emission shows a more featureless and extended distribution than CI.The CI/CO(J=3-2) integrated intensity ratio shows a spatial gradient running from the north (0.10) to the south (1.2) of the Orion A cloud, which we interpret as a consequence of the temperature gradient. On the other hand, the CI/13CO(J=1-0) intensity ratio shows no systematic gradient. We have found a good correlation between the CI and 13CO(J=1-0) intensities over the Orion A cloud.     Possibility for Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Dementia Using Three Kinds of Brown Rice Blends after High-Pressure Treatment

    As it has been reported that type 2 diabetes mellitus increases the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, we investigated how to prevent type 2 diabetes and dementia using biofunctional boiled rice. We adopted unpolished super-hard rice (SHBR) for diabetes and wax-free unpolished black rice (WFBBR) for dementia and blended those with ordinary non-polished rice (KBR) (blending ratio 4:4:2), adding 2.5% waxy black rice bran (WBB) and 0.3% rice oil after high-pressure treatment (HPT) (WFBSK) to improve its palatability. This boiled rice is rich in dietary fiber, anthocyanin, free ferulic acid and β-secretase inhibitory activity. A randomized, parallel-group comparison study was conducted for 12 weeks with 24 subjects, using Cognitrax to evaluate their cognitive function primarily. Furthermore, as the secondary purpose, we performed a single-dose test for postprandial blood glucose and insulin secretion at the end of the human intervention test. After 12 weeks, consumers of the WFBSK rice exhibited significant improvement in language memory by cognitive test battery compared with those who consumed the control white rice (p < 0.05). Moreover, subjects who consumed the WFBSK rice had lower insulin secretion levels than those who consumed the control polished rice (p < 0.05)
