A New Connection Type for Use in Intermediate or Special Steel Moment Frames

    Get PDF
Moment frames are one way to provide lateral stability to a building structure. For building structures that are located in high seismic regions, specific requirements are presented in applicable building codes pertaining to the moment connections used within these moment frames. The main factor required for these moment connections is their ability to resist cyclic moments at a relatively high drift specified within the applicable building code. This dissertation investigates the potential development of a new moment connection which would be appropriate for use in Intermediate Moment Frames (IMF) and Special Moment Frames (SMF). Two goals were set for this new moment connection. First, the moment connection would contain yielding elements that are easily replaceable after a seismic event while protecting the elements that are not replaceable. This goal is important as most (9 of 10) of the prequalified moment connections available for use in IMF and SMF systems sacrifice the beam during a major seismic event which could lead to the demolition of the structure. Second, the moment connection would not be a proprietary system. This goal is important as many (5 of 10) of the prequalified moment connections are proprietary systems that require payment for use. Also, proprietary systems tend to lead to less understanding by the engineer of record of the building structure as calculations for the moment connection are performed by a third party. The new proposed moment connection will be called the Yielding Threaded Rod, or YTR, moment connection. This connection contains a beam splice located a short distance away from the column to which it is connected. This beam splice has two components. First, a web connection is used to resist the beam shear. This web connection is a standard approved shear connection and is intended to resist shear only. Second, a flange connection is used to resist the beam moment as well as any axial load present in the beam. This flange connection is made with threaded rods connected to the two beam flanges. The threaded rods are sized to resist the forces present in the beam flange while also accommodating the deformations necessary to provide the specified seismic drifts without fracture. Both physical testing and an analytical model of the new proposed moment connection were carried out. Good correlation was found between the physical specimen and analytical model. Both indicated that the connection would be able to resist the required moments past the specified drifts. Therefore, the new proposed YTR moment connection may be a viable additional moment connection available to engineers for use in IMF and SMF systems

Scapulothoracic Mobility and Strengthening after a Posterior Capsular Reconstruction of the Glenohumeral Joint with an Allograft: A Case Report

The purpose of this case report is to emphasize the importance of scapular mobility and strengthening exercises in rehabilitation protocols for patients after a posterior capsular reconstruction surgery of the glenohumeral joint. The objective outcomes by week three are displayed in Table 1.0. The patient was discharged after nine visits over a period of three weeks. During the final session, the patient was able to perform standing shoulder abduction to 90 degrees with a one-pound dumbbell pain-free. The patient was able to reach into a shelf at 120 degrees of shoulder flexion with a pain scale rating of 2/10. He was unable to return to work or play basketball with his son, but he was able to reach his kitchen cabinets at home if he stood on a small step. The patient’s QuickDASH score improved to 59.09% disability.https://soar.usa.edu/flsafall2018/1014/thumbnail.jp

Settlement Back-Analysis of Buildings on Soft Soil in Southern Germany

    Get PDF
This paper presents 10 case-histories of buildings on soft clay in southern Germany. A lot of field observations show that the calculated settlements using the routine analysis are on average 50 % larger than settlements actually measured in this area. A back-analysis is carried out to verify the soil parameters which are intended to investigate in the subsurface exploration phase and later in a laboratory test program. Recommendations for the engineering practice are suggested to review the determination of compressibility parameters and, consequently, to improve the settlement prediction

Excavation in Deep Soft Lacustrine Soil Deposit

The paper presents a case study of a supported excavation in a deep soft lacustrine soil deposit located in the city of Constance, southern Germany. Besides demonstrating the construction aspect, the field measurement and monitoring results of the excavation project, the paper illustrates a back analysis of the project using the finite element method. It was revealed that in addition to the understanding of the soil behaviour, the soil-structure-interaction behaviour, and their simulation using an advanced constitutive soil models, the understanding and simulation of each detail of the construction process is also equally important. The study underlines the important of performing a 3D- analysis for reasonably prediction of the soil movement in and around excavations, or at least the inclusion of the 3D effect in the 2D analysis of the excavation
