Maternal Psychological Problems Associated with Neonatal Intensive Care Admission

Background. Mothers of infants admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) are believed to have heightened distress. The purpose of this paper was to determine depression and anxiety symptoms and attachment style in NICU mothers. Methods. The NICU group consisted of mothers whose infants were admitted to the NICU and the control group consisted of mothers of healthy term infants. The psychosocial assessments were done at the first month. Results. The mean Edinburgh Postpartum Depression (EPDS) score of NICU mothers was significantly higher than that of the control group mothers (9.6 ± 5.6 versus 7.3 ± 4.9, P = .005). NICU mothers who had high EPDS (≄13) scores had significantly higher anxiety scores and insecure attachment style in comparison to the subgroup of NICU mothers who had low EPDS scores. Conclusion. Mothers of NICU babies had higher EPDS scores. Mothers who had higher EPDS scores had higher anxiety scores as well. These NICU mothers should receive appropriate counseling during the hospitalization of their babies

Objectives: Several mucocutaneous diseases are responsible for desquamative gingivitis (DG) and diagnostic delays are common in these diseases due to non-specific clinical oral presentations. The present study aimed to analyze the clinical features of DG-related mucocutaneous diseases with oral manifestations and compare the findings with previous reports. Materials and Methods: Thirty newly diagnosed patients with oral mucocutaneous disease in the Dermatology and Venereology Department of Akdeniz University Medical School, between January 2018 and January 2020, and referred to the Periodontology Department for periodontal treatment were evaluated retrospectively. Patients demographic data (age and gender), medical comorbidities, primary lesion site (oral or skin), and clinical features of gingival and oral lesions (location and symptoms) were examined. Results: There were 18 oral lichen planus (OLP), 8 pemphigus vulgaris (PV), and 4 mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) patients with oral involvements. The mean age of the patients was 50.03 ± 9.71 years with a female predominance (male to female ratio 1:1.7). All patients suffered from chronic burning sensation and oral pain. DG was detected in all three mucocutaneous diseases but OLP was the main disease associated with DG (60%). However other oral mucosal lesions and extraoral involvements were more frequent in PV patients. Conclusions: According to these results, OLP, MMP, and PV are the mucocutaneous diseases responsible for DG, and OLP is the most common cause of DG. Clinicans should be familiar with the clinical presentations and signs (patient complaints) of DG-related mucocutaneous disease for early diagnosis, proper treatment, and quality of life of the patient

Successful treatment of bilateral open calcaneal fractures with concomitant lower extremity injuries: A case report

    Get PDF
Open calcaneal fractures are high morbidity injuries and the risk of complications depends on the concomitant injuries, on the size and the position of the traumatic wound. A 53-year-old male patient with bilateral open calcaneal fractures and associated concomitant lower extremity injuries such as subtalar dislocation, talonavicular dislocation and open distal tibial metaphyseal fracture was immediately operated by percutaneous Kirschner wire fixation combined with external fixators. He was able to walk with full weight bearing without any assistance at the end of the first postoperative year. Early aggressive debridement and irrigation followed by fixation with percutaneous Kirschner wires and external fixator can supply bony alignment in open comminuted calcaneal fractures associated with concomitant lower extremity injuries and should be considered for the healthy and active patients before primary arthrodesis

Censoring the Internet: The Situation in Turkey

    No full text
Censoring the Internet is quite prevalent, though the extent of this activity markedly differs from country to country. While some prohibit controversial sites such as those with explicit sexual images or blatantly racist remarks, others implement restricted access. Turkey, showing the symptoms of a developing country, has not yet established the jurisprudence necessary for the Internet. The existing Turkish laws, especially the Press Law, are naively applied to alleged lawbreakers on the Internet, resulting in ludicrous outcomes. This paper investigates the Turkish case of Internet censorship, focusing on two publicized cases with some political content
