On the use of the approximation in atomic calculations
We demonstrate that approximation is a good starting point for the
configuration interaction calculations for many-electron atoms and ions. is
the total number of electrons in the neutral atom, is the number of valence
electrons. is the self-consistent Hartree Fock potential for a
closed-shell ion with all valence electrons removed. Using of the
approximation considerably simplifies the many-body perturbation theory for the
core-valence correlations. It makes it easier to include higher-order
correlations which often significantly improves the accuracy of the
calculations. Calculations for krypton and barium and their positive ions are

Teachers as mediators: an exploration of situated English teaching
Within the context of lower secondary English teaching in South West England, this study identifies in broad terms the competing goals between which English teachers mediate and the explicit and hidden tensions that result. To understand the interactions of competing goals, teachersā goal-oriented behaviours are referenced to a set of idealised ārole typesā based on the dimensions of goals, norms, discourses and practices. It is asserted that competing goals, significant to particular educational circumstances, emanate from various sometimes contradictory local, national and perhaps broader social and cultural influences on practice. Yet the teachers observed moved smoothly between goal-oriented behaviours in a continuous and comfortable style, easily and without reflecting any tensions between them. Varieties of teacher expertise in teaching Danish language and literature in lower secondary schools
Ab-initio calculation of the Gilbert damping parameter via linear response formalism
A Kubo-Greenwood-like equation for the Gilbert damping parameter is
presented that is based on the linear response formalism. Its implementation
using the fully relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) band structure method
in combination with Coherent Potential Approximation (CPA) alloy theory allows
it to be applied to a wide range of situations. This is demonstrated with
results obtained for the bcc alloy system FeCo as well as for a
series of alloys of permalloy with 5d transition metals.
To account for the thermal displacements of atoms as a scattering mechanism,
an alloy-analogy model is introduced. The corresponding calculations for Ni
correctly describe the rapid change of when small amounts of
substitutional Cu are introduced
Flightweight radiantly and actively cooled panel: Thermal and structural performance
A 2- by 4-ft flightweight panel was subjected to thermal/structural tests representative of design flight conditions for a Mach 6.7 transport and to off-design conditions simulating flight maneuvers and cooling system failures. The panel utilized Rene 41 heat shields backed by a thin layer of insulation to radiate away most of the 12 Btu/ft2-sec incident heating. A solution of ethylene glycol in water circulating through tubes in an aluminum-honeycomb-sandwich panel absorbed the remainder of the incident heating (0.8 Btu/sq ft-sec). The panel successfully withstood (1) 46.7 hr of radiant heating which included 53 thermal cycles and 5000 cycles of uniaxial inplane loading of + or - 1200 lfb/in; (2) simulated 2g-maneuver heating conditions and simulated cooling system failures without excessive temperatures on the structural panel; and (3) the extensive thermal/structural tests and the aerothermal tests reported in NASA TP-1595 without significant damage to the structural panel, coolant leaks, or hot-gas ingress to the structural panel
State space collapse and diffusion approximation for a network operating under a fair bandwidth sharing policy
We consider a connection-level model of Internet congestion control,
introduced by Massouli\'{e} and Roberts [Telecommunication Systems 15 (2000)
185--201], that represents the randomly varying number of flows present in a
network. Here, bandwidth is shared fairly among elastic document transfers
according to a weighted -fair bandwidth sharing policy introduced by Mo
and Walrand [IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking 8 (2000) 556--567] []. Assuming Poisson arrivals and exponentially distributed document
sizes, we focus on the heavy traffic regime in which the average load placed on
each resource is approximately equal to its capacity. A fluid model (or
functional law of large numbers approximation) for this stochastic model was
derived and analyzed in a prior work [Ann. Appl. Probab. 14 (2004) 1055--1083]
by two of the authors. Here, we use the long-time behavior of the solutions of
the fluid model established in that paper to derive a property called
multiplicative state space collapse, which, loosely speaking, shows that in
diffusion scale, the flow count process for the stochastic model can be

Effects of lattice mismatch on interfacial structures of liquid and solidified Al in contact with hetero-phase substrates: MD simulations

Any further distribution of this work must maintain attribution to the author(s) and the title of the work, journal citation and DOI.In this study, the effects of the misfit on in-plane structures of liquid Al and interfacial structure of solidified Al in contact with the heterophase substrates have been investigated, using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The MD simulations were conducted for Al/fcc (111) substrates with varied misfits. The order parameter and atomic arrangement indicated that the in-plane ordering of the liquid at the interface decreases significantly with an increase of the misfit, i.e., solid-like for small misfit and liquid-like for large misfit. Further, our MD simulation results revealed that a perfect orientation relationship forms at the interface between the substrate and the solidified Al for a misfit of less than -3% and the boundary is coherent. With an increase in the misfit, Shockley partial and extended dislocations form at the interface, and the boundary becomes a semi-coherent or low-angle twist boundary.EPSR
Unbounded Human Learning: Optimal Scheduling for Spaced Repetition
In the study of human learning, there is broad evidence that our ability to
retain information improves with repeated exposure and decays with delay since
last exposure. This plays a crucial role in the design of educational software,
leading to a trade-off between teaching new material and reviewing what has
already been taught. A common way to balance this trade-off is spaced
repetition, which uses periodic review of content to improve long-term
retention. Though spaced repetition is widely used in practice, e.g., in
electronic flashcard software, there is little formal understanding of the
design of these systems. Our paper addresses this gap in three ways. First, we
mine log data from spaced repetition software to establish the functional
dependence of retention on reinforcement and delay. Second, we use this memory
model to develop a stochastic model for spaced repetition systems. We propose a
queueing network model of the Leitner system for reviewing flashcards, along
with a heuristic approximation that admits a tractable optimization problem for
review scheduling. Finally, we empirically evaluate our queueing model through
a Mechanical Turk experiment, verifying a key qualitative prediction of our
model: the existence of a sharp phase transition in learning outcomes upon
