    Dissolution Properties of CO2 in the High Pressure Environment Equivalent to 3500m Deep Sea

    AbstractThe purpose of the present study is to investigate the influence of CO2 hydrate formation and dissociation on the dissolution properties of liquid CO2. In order to clarify the influence of CO2 hydrate formation and dissociation, pressure and temperature are measured under both conditions of hydrate region and non-hydrate region. Hysteresis is obtained in the formation and dissociation of CO2 hydrate as a function of temperature. It is confirmed that there is hysteresis in the case of hydrate region, however, virtually no hysteresis in the case of non-hydrate region. As the result, it is confirmed that hysteresis is caused by CO2 hydrate and all hysteresis loop obtained in this study are all different, though experiment conditions is almost same.     Single-cell sequencing: Greater insight through integrated data Combining data from different single-cell sequencing techniques could greatly improve understanding of the molecular profiles associated with disease. Sequencing studies provide valuable insights into diseased and healthy states at a single-cell level, for example the evolutionary paths of brain tumors and cancerous mutations. Ayako Suzuki at the University of Tokyo in Chiba, Japan, and co-workers examined the challenges of integrating data from various experimental and computational single-cell sequencing methods. These methods usually determine the genomic, epigenomic (DNA modifications) or transcriptomic (messenger RNAs) state of a cell, and can be combined to create a detailed picture. Other ‘multiomics’ techniques provide multilayered information from the same cell. The researchers recommend detailed analysis of individual data layers prior to integration, and highlight emerging techniques that analyze larger tissue sections, thus retaining the temporal and spatial information around a cell

    Preparation and Hydrophilicity/Lipophilicity of Solubility-Switchable Ionic Liquids

    Various solubility-switchable ionic liquids were prepared. Their syntheses were readily achieved in a few steps from glyceraldehyde dimethylacetal or its derivatives. Pyridinium, imidazolium, and phosphonium derivatives also exhibited solubility-switchable properties; acetal-type ionic liquids were soluble in organic solvents, while diol-type ones exhibited a preference for being dissolved in the aqueous phase. The solubility of the ionic liquids prepared in this study also depended on the number of carbon atoms in the cationic parts of the ionic liquids. Interconversion between the diol-type and the acetal-type ionic liquids was readily achieved under the standard conditions for diol acetalization and acetal hydrolysis. One of the prepared ionic liquids was also examined as a solvent for an organic reaction

    Is Hippocampal Resection Necessary for Low-Grade Epilepsy-Associated Tumors in the Temporal Lobe?

    Low-grade epilepsy-associated tumors (LEATs) are common in the temporal lobe and can cause drug-resistant epilepsy. Complete resection of LEATs is sufficient for seizure relief. However, hippocampal resection might result in postoperative cognitive impairment. This study aimed to clarify the necessity of hippocampal resection for seizure and cognitive outcomes in patients with temporal lobe LEATs and a normal hippocampus. The study included 32 patients with temporal lobe LEATs and without hippocampal abnormalities. All patients underwent gross total resection as treatment for drug-resistant epilepsy at our tertiary epilepsy center from 2005 to 2020, followed by at least a 12-month follow-up period. Seizure and cognitive outcomes were compared between patients who underwent additional hippocampal resection (Resected group) and those who did not (Preserved group). Among the participants, 14 underwent additional hippocampal resection and 28 (87.5%) achieved seizure freedom irrespective of hippocampal resection. The seizure-free periods were not different between the two groups. Additional hippocampal resection resulted in a significantly negative impact on the postoperative verbal index. In conclusion, additional hippocampal resection in patients with temporal lobe LEATs without hippocampal abnormalities is unnecessary because lesionectomy alone results in good seizure control. Additional hippocampal resection may instead adversely affect the postoperative language function

    Single-Institutional Experience of Chronic Intracranial Electroencephalography Based on the Combined Usage of Subdural and Depth Electrodes

    Implantation of subdural electrodes on the brain surface is still widely performed as one of the “gold standard methods” for the presurgical evaluation of epilepsy. Stereotactic insertion of depth electrodes to the brain can be added to detect brain activities in deep-seated lesions to which surface electrodes are insensitive. This study tried to clarify the efficacy and limitations of combined implantation of subdural and depth electrodes in intractable epilepsy patients. Fifty-three patients with drug-resistant epilepsy underwent combined implantation of subdural and depth electrodes for long-term intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) before epilepsy surgery. The detectability of early ictal iEEG change (EIIC) were compared between the subdural and depth electrodes. We also examined clinical factors including resection of MRI lesion and EIIC with seizure freedom. Detectability of EIIC showed no significant difference between subdural and depth electrodes. However, the additional depth electrode was useful for detecting EIIC from apparently deep locations, such as the insula and mesial temporal structures, but not in detecting EIIC in patients with ulegyria (glial scar). Total removal of MRI lesion was associated with seizure freedom. Depth electrodes should be carefully used after consideration of the suspected etiology to avoid injudicious usage

    Corpus callosotomy in pediatric patients with non-lesional epileptic encephalopathy with electrical status epilepticus during sleep

    Epileptic encephalopathy with electrical status epilepticus during sleep (ESES) is often refractory to medical treatment and leads to poor cognitive outcomes. Corpus callosotomy may be an effective treatment option for drug-resistant ESES with no focal etiology. We retrospectively identified three patients who underwent corpus callosotomy for drug-resistant ESES in our institution. Electroencephalography (EEG) findings and cognitive functions were evaluated before surgery, at 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years after surgery. Age at surgery was 6 years 10 months, 7 years 9 months, and 8 years 4 months, respectively. Period between the diagnosis of ESES and surgery ranged from 7 to 25 months. All patients had no obvious structural abnormalities and presented with cognitive decline despite multiple antiseizure medications and steroid therapies. One patient showed complete resolution of ESES and an improvement of intelligence quotient after surgery. Epileptiform EEG was lateralized to one hemisphere after surgery and spike wave index (SWI) was decreased with moderate improvement in development and seizures in the other 2 patients. SWI re-exacerbated from 6 months after surgery, but without subsequent developmental regression in these 2 patients. Corpus callosotomy may become an important treatment option for drug-resistant ESES in patients with no structural abnormalities

    Distinctive magnetic resonance imaging findings of hepatocellular carcinoma after hepatitis C virus eradication with direct-acting antivirals

    Aim: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the characteristics of the magnetic resonance imaging features of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) that developed early after the eradication of hepatitis C virus (HCV) by direct-acting antiviral (DAA) treatment.Methods: This study included 26 patients who achieved sustained viral response with DAA and developed HCC thereafter within one year (DAA-SVR HCC). The radiologic characteristics of these patients were evaluated by contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging, including diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and T2-weighted imaging (T2WI). For comparison, 80 HCC patients with positive HCV RNA (HCV-positive HCC) were included. Among 42 patients where tumor biopsy was available, histological grade and radiologic findings were compared.Results: The rates of high intensity on DWI and T2WI were significantly higher in DAA-SVR HCC compared to HCV-positive HCC (DWI: 100% vs. 67.5%, P < 0.001; T2WI: 92.6% vs. 67.5%, P = 0.01). HCC with high intensity on DWI or T2WI was more likely to have moderately or poorly differentiated HCC compared to well-differentiated HCC (DWI: 69.7% vs. 30.3%, P = 0.02; T2WI: 66.7% vs. 27.3%, P = 0.03).Conclusion: High intensity on DWI and hyperintensity on T2WI were distinctive features of HCC that developed within one year after the end of DAA treatment

    Analysis of prognosis and background liver disease in non-advanced hepatocellular carcinoma in two decades.

    Background/aimAntiviral hepatitis and systemic therapies for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remarkably progressed in the recent 10 years. This study aimed to reveal the actual transition and changes in the prognosis and background liver disease in non-advanced HCC in the past 20 years.MethodsThis retrospectively recruited 566 patients who were diagnosed with non-advanced HCC from February 2002 to February 2022. The prognosis was analyzed by subdividing according to the diagnosis date (period I: February 2002-April 2009 and period Ⅱ: May 2009-February 2022).ResultsPatients in period II (n = 351) were significantly older, with lower albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) scores and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and more anti-viral therapy, systemic therapy, and hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy as compared with those in period I (n = 215). The etiology ratio of the background liver disease revealed decreased hepatitis C virus from 70.6% to 49.0% and increased non-B, non-C from 17.7% to 39.9% from periods I to Ⅱ. The multivariate analysis revealed older age and higher ALBI score in Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) 0/A stage, AFP of >20 ng/mL, and higher ALBI score in BCLC B stage as independent prognosis factors. Fine-Gray competing risk model analysis revealed that liver-related deaths significantly decreased in period II as compared to period I, especially for BCLC stage 0/A (HR: 0.656; 95%CI: 0.442-0.972, P = 0.036).ConclusionThe characteristics of patients with non-advanced HCC have changed over time. Appropriate background liver management led to better liver-related prognoses in BCLC 0/A
