End-to-End Joint Target and Non-Target Speakers ASR
This paper proposes a novel automatic speech recognition (ASR) system that
can transcribe individual speaker's speech while identifying whether they are
target or non-target speakers from multi-talker overlapped speech.
Target-speaker ASR systems are a promising way to only transcribe a target
speaker's speech by enrolling the target speaker's information. However, in
conversational ASR applications, transcribing both the target speaker's speech
and non-target speakers' ones is often required to understand interactive
information. To naturally consider both target and non-target speakers in a
single ASR model, our idea is to extend autoregressive modeling-based
multi-talker ASR systems to utilize the enrollment speech of the target
speaker. Our proposed ASR is performed by recursively generating both textual
tokens and tokens that represent target or non-target speakers. Our experiments

COMT Val158Met, but not BDNF Val66Met, is associated with white matter abnormalities of the temporal lobe in patients with first-episode, treatment-naïve major depressive disorder: a diffusion tensor imaging study
We investigated the association between the Val158Met polymorphism of the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) gene, the Val66Met polymorphism of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene, and white matter changes in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and healthy subjects using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). We studied 30 patients with MDD (17 males and 13 females, with mean age ± standard deviation [SD] =44±12 years) and 30 sex- and age-matched healthy controls (17 males and 13 females, aged 44±13 years). Using DTI analysis with a tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) approach, we investigated the differences in fractional anisotropy, radial diffusivity, and axial diffusivity distribution among the three groups (patients with the COMT gene Val158Met, those with the BDNF gene Val66Met, and the healthy subjects). In a voxel-wise-based group comparison, we found significant decreases in fractional anisotropy and axial diffusivity within the temporal lobe white matter in the Met-carriers with MDD compared with the controls (P<0.05). No correlations in fractional anisotropy, axial diffusivity, or radial diffusivity were observed between the MDD patients and the controls, either among those with the BDNF Val/Val genotype or among the BDNF Met-carriers. These results suggest an association between the COMT gene Val158Met and the white matter abnormalities found in the temporal lobe of patients with MDD
Brain structural connectivity and neuroticism in healthy adults
Understanding the neural correlates of the neurotic brain is important because neuroticism is a risk factor for the development of psychopathology. We examined the correlation between brain structural networks and neuroticism based on NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) scores. Fifty-one healthy participants (female, n = 18; male, n = 33; mean age, 38.5 ± 11.7 years) underwent the NEO-FFI test and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), including diffusion tensor imaging and 3D T1WI. Using MRI data, for each participant, we constructed whole-brain interregional connectivity matrices by deterministic tractography and calculated the graph theoretical network measures, including the characteristic path length, global clustering coefficient, small-worldness, and betweenness centrality (BET) in 83 brain regions from the Desikan-Killiany atlas with subcortical segmentation using FreeSurfer. In relation to the BET, neuroticism score had a negative correlation in the left isthmus cingulate cortex, left superior parietal, left superior temporal, right caudal middle frontal, and right entorhinal cortices, and a positive correlation in the bilateral frontal pole, left caudal anterior cingulate cortex, and left fusiform gyrus. No other measurements showed significant correlations. Our results imply that the brain regions related to neuroticism exist in various regions, and that the neuroticism trait is likely formed as a result of interactions among these regions. EMPRESS. IX. Extremely Metal-Poor Galaxies are Very Gas-Rich Dispersion-Dominated Systems: Will JWST Witness Gaseous Turbulent High-z Primordial Galaxies?
We present kinematics of 6 local extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs) with
low metallicities () and low stellar masses
(). Taking deep medium-high resolution
() integral-field spectra with 8.2-m Subaru, we resolve the small
inner velocity gradients and dispersions of the EMPGs with H emission.
Carefully masking out sub-structures originated by inflow and/or outflow, we
fit 3-dimensional disk models to the observed H flux, velocity, and
velocity-dispersion maps. All the EMPGs show rotational velocities () of 5--23 km s smaller than the velocity dispersions
() of 17--31 km s, indicating dispersion-dominated () systems affected by inflow and/or outflow. Except
for two EMPGs with large uncertainties, we find that the EMPGs have very large
gas-mass fractions of . Comparing our results with
other H kinematics studies, we find that
decreases and increases with decreasing metallicity, decreasing
stellar mass, and increasing specific star-formation rate. We also find that
simulated high- () forming galaxies have gas fractions and dynamics
similar to the observed EMPGs. Our EMPG observations and the simulations
suggest that primordial galaxies are gas-rich dispersion-dominated systems,
which would be identified by the forthcoming James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)

Relationship between adrenal steroid hormones in cord blood and birth weight : The Sapporo Cohort, Hokkaido Study on Environment and Children's Health
Objectives: We investigated the relationship between steroid hormone levels in cord blood and birth weight.
Methods: Among 514 participants in a prospective birth cohort study in Sapporo, the following hormone levels were measured in 294 stored cord blood samples from 135 males and 159 females: androstenedione, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), cortisol, and cortisone. Birth weight information was obtained from medical records.
Results: Androstenedione/DHEA was significantly higher in males than in females, while DHEA was significantly higher in females. Birth weight was significantly higher in males than in females. Regarding cortisone, androstenedione/DHEA, and cortisone/cortisol, a correlation was observed with birth weight in males but not in females.
Conclusions: Prenatal adrenal steroids as well as converting enzymes such as 11ß-hydrosteroid dehydrogenase type 2 and 3ß-hydrosteroid dehydrogenase may have an impact on prenatal physical development
Cord blood BPA and reproductive and thyroid hormone levels of neonates
Background: Bisphenol A (BPA) is widely used and BPA exposure is nearly ubiquitous in developed countries. While animal studies have indicated adverse health effects of prenatal BPA exposure including reproductive dysfunction and thyroid function disruption possibly in sex-specific manner, findings from epidemiological studies have not been enough to proof these adverse effects. Given very limited research on human, the aim of this study was to investigate associations between cord blood BPA levels and reproductive and thyroid hormone levels of neonates and whether associations differed by neonate sex. Methods: Among 514 participants of the Hokkaido study who were recruited from 2002 to 2005 at one hospital in Sapporo, Japan. BPA level in cord blood was determined by ID-LC/MS/MS and the limit of quantification was 0.040 ng/ml. 9 types of reproductive hormone levels in cord blood were measured and thyroid hormone levels were obtained from neonate mass screening test data. 283 subjects those who had both BPA and hormone levels measurements were included for the final analyses. Results: Geometric mean of cord blood BPA was 0.051 ng/ml. After adjustment, BPA level was negatively associated with prolactin (PRL) (β=-0.38). There was an interaction between infant sex and BPA levels on PRL, weak negative association was found in boys (β=-0.12) whereas weak positive association was found in girls (β=0.14). BPA level showed weak positive association with testosterone, estradiol and progesterone levels in boys. No association was found between BPA and thyroid hormone levels. Conclusions: Our findings suggested that fetal BPA levels might be associated with certain reproductive hormone levels of neonate with sex-specific manner, though further investigations are necessary
