Outage analysis of cognitive hybrid satellite-terrestrial networks with hardware impairments and multi-primary users

    Get PDF
This paper investigates the effects of practical hardware impairments (HIs) on a cognitive hybrid satellite-terrestrial networks (CHSTN) with multiple primary users (PUs). The widely-employed Shadowed-Rician fading distribution is adopted to model the satellite-terrestrial channel. CHSTN can provide comprehensive wireless coverage as well as enhanced spectrum resource usage by considering the requirements of both spectrum efficiency and reliability. Specifically, we derive the closed-form expression of the outage probability (OP) for the considered system in the presence of interference power constraints imposed by multiple adjacent terrestrial PUs. To gain further insights at high signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), the asymptotic expression for the OP is also derived. Numerical results confirm the correctness and effectiveness of our performance analysis

Cogging force reduction for tubular permanent magnet linear motor by slots with different sizes

    Get PDF
Reduction of cogging force is one of the main concerns of tubular permanent magnet linear motor (TPMLM). In this paper, an analytical calculation of air-gap magnetic density is derived. In addition, an analytical calculation of cogging force is deduced by the energy method. The impact of slots with different sizes on the Fourier coefficients of relative air-gap permanence function is demonstrated. When the nz/4p is the integer, it will produce the cogging force. Therefore, it is practical to reduce the cogging force by changing the Fourier coefficient smaller. The effectiveness of the theoretical analysis is validated by experimental results

    Magnetochiral Tunneling in Paramagnetic Co1/3_{1/3}NbS2_2

Electric currents have the intriguing ability to induce magnetization in nonmagnetic crystals with sufficiently low crystallographic symmetry. Some associated phenomena include the non-linear anomalous Hall effect in polar crystals and the nonreciprocal directional dichroism in chiral crystals when magnetic fields are applied. In this work, we demonstrate that the same underlying physics is also manifested in the electronic tunneling process between the surface of a nonmagnetic chiral material and a magnetized scanning probe. In the paramagnetic but chiral metallic compound Co1/3_{1/3}NbS2_2, the magnetization induced by the tunneling current is shown to become detectable by its coupling to the magnetization of the tip itself. This results in a contrast across different chiral domains, achieving atomic-scale spatial resolution of structural chirality. To support the proposed mechanism, we used first-principles theory to compute the chirality-dependent current-induced magnetization and Berry curvature in the bulk of the material. Our demonstration of this magnetochiral tunneling effect opens up a new avenue for investigating atomic-scale variations in the local crystallographic symmetry and electronic structure across the structural domain boundaries of low-symmetry nonmagnetic crystals.Comment: 4 figure

Global miRNA profiling reveals key molecules that contribute to different chronic lymphocytic leukemia incidences in Asian and Western populations

It has been known for decades that the incidence of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is significantly lower in Asia than in Western countries, but the reason responsible for this difference still remains a major knowledge gap. Using GeneChip® miRNA array to analyze the global microRNA expression in B lymphocytes from Asian and Western CLL patients and healthy individuals, we have identified microRNA with CLL-promoting or suppressive functions that are differentially expressed in Asian and Western individuals. In particular, miR-4485 is upregulated in CLL patients of both ethnic groups, and its expression is significantly lower in Asian healthy individuals. Genetic silencing of miR-4485 in CLL cells suppresses leukemia cell growth, whereas ectopic expression of miR-4485 promotes cell proliferation. Mechanistically, miR-4485 exerts its CLL-promoting activity by inhibiting the expression of TGR5 and activating the ERK1/2 pathway. In contrast, miR-138, miR-181a, miR- 181c, miR-181d, and miR-363 with tumor-suppressive function are highly expressed in Asian healthy individuals. Our study suggests that differential expression of several important microRNA with pro- or anti-CLL functions in Asian and Western B lymphocytes likely contributes to the difference in CLL incidence between the two ethnic groups, and that miR-4485 and its downstream molecule TGR5 could be potential therapeutic targets

Genetic Polymorphism in a VEGF-Independent Angiogenesis Gene ANGPT1 and Overall Survival of Colorectal Cancer Patients after Surgical Resection

Background The VEGF-independent angiogenic signaling plays an important role in the development of colorectal cancer (CRC). However, its implication in the clinical outcome of CRC has not been reported. This study aimed to investigate the association between genetic variations in several major VEGF-independent signaling pathway genes and the overall survival of CRC patients. Methods Seven single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in four important VEGF-independent angiogenic genes (ANGPT1, AMOT, DLL4 and ENG) were genotyped in a Chinese population with 408 CRC patients. Results One SNP, rs1954727 in ANGPT1, was significantly associated with CRC overall survival. Compared to patients with the homozygous wild-type genotype of rs1954727, those with heterozygous and homozygous variant genotypes exhibited a favorable overall survival with a hazard ratio (HR) of 0.89 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.55–1.43, P = 0.623), and 0.32 (95% CI 0.15–0.71, P = 0.005), respectively (P trend = 0.008). In stratified analysis, this association remained significant in patients receiving chemotherapy (P trend = 0.012), but not in those without chemotherapy. We further evaluated the effects of chemotherapy on CRC survival that was stratified by rs1954727 genotypes. We found that chemotherapy resulted in a significantly better overall survival in the CRC patients (HR = 0.44, 95% CI 0.26–0.75, P = 0.002), which was especially prominent in those patients with the heterozygous genotype of rs1954727 (HR = 0.45, 95%CI 0.22–0.92, P = 0.028). Conclusion Our data suggest that rs1954727 in ANGPT1 gene might be a prognostic biomarker for the overall survival of CRC patients, especially in those receiving chemotherapy, a finding that warrants validation in larger independent populations

The transplant rejection response involves neutrophil and macrophage adhesion-mediated trogocytosis and is regulated by NFATc3

The anti-foreign tissue (transplant rejection) response, mediated by the immune system, has been the biggest obstacle to successful organ transplantation. There are still many enigmas regarding this process and some aspects of the underlying mechanisms driving the immune response against foreign tissues remain poorly understood. Here, we found that a large number of neutrophils and macrophages were attached to the graft during skin transplantation. Furthermore, both types of cells could autonomously adhere to and damage neonatal rat cardiomyocyte mass (NRCM) in vitro. We have demonstrated that Complement C3 and the receptor CR3 participated in neutrophils/macrophages-mediated adhesion and damage this foreign tissue (NRCM or skin grafts). We have provided direct evidence that the damage to these tissues occurs by a process referred to as trogocytosis, a damage mode that has never previously been reported to directly destroy grafts. We further demonstrated that this process can be regulated by NFAT, in particular, NFATc3. This study not only enriches an understanding of host-donor interaction in transplant rejection, but also provides new avenues for exploring the development of novel immunosuppressive drugs which prevent rejection during transplant therapy
