Mellon FoundationKusaie is a small island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, lying roughly midway between Pohnpei and the Marshalls. Its language is distinct from those of the other island groups of Micronesia, though it has many cognates with Marshallese. Designed to be a companion volume to the author's Kusaiean reference grammar, this dictionary will be of use to anyone wanting to learn the Kusaiean language or to linguists involved in comparative and historical studies of Austronesian linguistics

    NMR study on the stability of the magnetic ground state in MnCr2{}_2O4{}_4

    The canting angles and fluctuation of the magnetic ion spins of spinel oxide MnCr2{}_2O4{}_4 were studied by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) at low temperatures, which has a collinear ferrimagnetic order below TCT_C and a ferrimagnetic spiral order below Ts<TCT_s < T_C. Contrary to previous reports, only one spin canting angle of Cr ions was observed. The spin canting angles of Mn and Cr ions in the ferrimagnetic spiral obtained at a liquid-He temperature were 43\,^{\circ} and 110\,^{\circ}, respectively. The nuclear spin-spin relaxation was determined by the Suhl-Nakamura interaction at low temperatures but the relaxation rate T21T_2^{-1} increases rapidly as the temperature approaches TsT_s. This indicates that the fluctuation of the spiral component becomes faster as the temperature increases but not fast enough to leave an averaged hyperfine field to nuclei in the time scale of nuclear spin precession in the ferrimagnetic phase, which is on the order of 10810^{-8} s. The spiral volume fraction measured for various temperatures reveals that the collinear and the spiral ferrimagnetic phases are mixed below the transition temperature of the spiral order. The temperature hysteresis in the volume fraction implies that this transition has first-order characteristics.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure

    Gating of memory encoding of time-delayed cross-frequency MEG networks revealed by graph filtration based on persistent homology

    To explain gating of memory encoding, magnetoencephalography (MEG) was analyzed over multi-regional network of negative correlations between alpha band power during cue (cue-alpha) and gamma band power during item presentation (item-gamma) in Remember (R) and No-remember (NR) condition. Persistent homology with graph filtration on alpha-gamma correlation disclosed topological invariants to explain memory gating. Instruction compliance (R-hits minus NR-hits) was significantly related to negative coupling between the left superior occipital (cue-alpha) and the left dorsolateral superior frontal gyri (item-gamma) on permutation test, where the coupling was stronger in R than NR. In good memory performers (R-hits minus false alarm), the coupling was stronger in R than NR between the right posterior cingulate (cue-alpha) and the left fusiform gyri (item-gamma). Gating of memory encoding was dictated by inter-regional negative alpha-gamma coupling.     Inelastic scattering in a monolayer graphene sheet; a weak-localization study

    Charge carriers in a graphene sheet, a single layer of graphite, exhibit much distinctive characteristics to those in other two-dimensional electronic systems because of their chiral nature. In this report, we focus on the observation of weak localization in a graphene sheet exfoliated from a piece of natural graphite and nano-patterned into a Hall-bar geometry. Much stronger chiral-symmetry-breaking elastic intervalley scattering in our graphene sheet restores the conventional weak localization. The resulting carrier-density and temperature dependence of the phase coherence length reveal that the electron-electron interaction including a direct Coulomb interaction is the main inelastic scattering factor while electron-hole puddles enhance the inelastic scattering near the Dirac point.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, submitted to PR

    Indentations on Air Plasma Sprayed Thermal Barrier Coatings Prepared by Different Starting Granules

    The effect of starting granules on the indentation properties of air plasma sprayed thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) is investigated in this paper. Various kinds of spray-dried granules are prepared from different processing conditions, especially varying solvent and dispersant, showing a deformed hollow-typed and a filled spherical-typed granule. The similar coating thicknesses are prepared by adjusting process parameters during air plasma spray. All XRD peaks in phase analysis are tetragonal and cubic phases without any monoclinic phase after the starting granules were heat-treated. A relatively porous microstructure of the coating layer could be obtained from the monodisperse granules, while a relatively dense microstructure resulted from the hollow-typed granules. The morphology and distribution of the granules crucially affect the microstructure of thermal barrier coatings and thus have influences on indentation properties such as indentation stress-strain curves, contact damage, and hardness.     A Spoken Dialogue Analysis Platform for Effective Counselling

    This paper proposes a spoken dialogue analysis platform (SDAP) that could assist counsellors in person-to-person counselling by analysing counselling conversations and providing key information that could enhance the counsellors\u27 understanding of the counselees\u27 conditions and situations. The proposed platform has two main modules: a speech recognition module and a text analysis module that are specifically built for the Korean language. The speech recognition module uses NAVER CLOVA Speech service to convert voice recordings of counselling dialogues into text. The Korean text analysis environment of the text analysis module was built using NLTK, KoNLPy and scikit-learn library, and, for now, the module provides two types of text analysis: keyword analysis and sentiment analysis. The results of the text analyses that provide keywords and analysis of customers\u27 emotional state can help counsellors to provide appropriate feedback to the counselees easily and more quickly, making the counselling fast and effective and reducing the counselees\u27 waiting time. In the experiments, the text analysis module building process is elaborated in detail, and the usefulness of the proposed SDAP is exemplified by case studies on actual counselling conversations at a dental clinic and a fitness centre
