The isologous bone marrow which had been kept in glycerol-Tyrode's solution at -80°C as long as 270 days protected well the lethally gamma-irradiated mice as well as the fresh IBM transplantation did, as far as 5 million of nucleated cells were injected. The homologous bone marrow preserved as long as 90 days gave higher 21 days survival rates than those in the fresh HBM transplantation, as far as 5 million of nucleated cells were injected, and furthermore postponed the development of the secondary diseases as compared to the fresh HBM transplantation. The HBM which had been preserved more than 90 days and given in dose of 5 million nucleated cells, however, could not protect the lethally irradiated mice. When the number of the nucleated cells which were preserved and transplanted was increased up to 10 million, good early survival rates were observed in 120 days and 180 days preserved HBM transplantation. The supposed reasons for this favorable effect by freezing were discussed

Clonazepam-induced liver dysfunction, severe hyperlipidaemia, and hyperglycaemic crisis: A case report

In this study, we report a case of a 50-year-old Japanese man who had chronic whiplash-associated disorder, hyperlipidaemia, hyperuricacidaemia, and mild liver dysfunction due to excessive alcohol intake. Recently, he developed mild tremor in his left hand. Initiation of clonazepam (0.5 mg once daily before bedtime) helped to gradually ameliorate the tremor. However, 13 days after clonazepam initiation, his liver function and lipid profiles aggravated, and his postprandial glucose level increased to 400 mg/dL. Clonazepam was stopped promptly, and at 7 days after discontinuation, the abnormal triglyceride levels, liver dysfunction, and glycometabolism improved without any other medical intervention. This case may provide information on cautious use of clonazepam. When clonazepam is used for patients with existing hyperlipidaemia and liver dysfunction, it may cause abnormal lipid profile, aggravate liver dysfunction, and lead to remarkable glucose elevation

Transumbilical extraction of 151â300-g myomas without morcellator versus conventional laparoscopic myomectomy with power morcellator

Study objective: The aim of this study was to compare the surgical outcomes, particularly the specimen retrieval time, between two methods of laparoscopic myomectomy: transumbilical retrieval of the myoma without a morcellator and conventional retrieval of the myoma using a power morcellator via the left lower quadrant. Design: Retrospective study. Setting: Public hospital. Patients: Seventy-four women undergoing laparoscopic myomectomy. Interventions: Laparoscopic myomectomy followed by myoma retrieval via transumbilical extraction or electric motorized morcellator extraction. Measurements and main results: Seventy-four patients undergoing laparoscopic myomectomy followed by myoma retrieval via transumbilical extraction or electric motorized morcellator extraction were studied. Significant differences were observed in the average weight of the retrieved myomas between the transumbilical and morcellator groups (141.0 vs. 262.8 g, respectively; p < 0.001). Therefore, we chose 27 patients whose total specimen weight was 151â300 g; 13 patients were in the transumbilical extraction group and 14 were in the electric motorized morcellator group. No significant differences were observed in patient characteristics between the two groups. The operative time, blood loss volume, and myoma retrieval time were similar between the two groups. Conclusion: Laparoscopic myomectomy with transumbilical extraction for myoma retrieval is a feasible method for specimens weighing up to 300 g.
