Studying possible CP-violating Higgs couplings through top-quark pair productions at muon colliders

We study possible anomalous CP-violating Higgs couplings to mu mu-bar and t t-bar fully model-independent way through top-quark pair productions at muon colliders. Assuming additional non-standard neutral Higgs bosons, whose couplings with top-quark and muon are expressed in the most general covariant form, we carry out analyses of effects which they are expected to produce via CP-violating asymmetries and also the optimal-observable (OO) procedure under longitudinal and transverse muon polarizations. We find the measurement of the asymmetry for longitudinal beam polarization could be useful to catch some signal of CP violation, and an OO analysis might also be useful if we could reduce the number of unknown parameters with a help of other experiments and if the size of the parameters is at least O(1) ~ O(10).Comment: Final version (to appear in JHEP

Top-quark pair productions and CP-violating Higgs interactions at muon colliders

We study CP-violation effects from possible non-standard Higgs interactions in beyond-the-standard-model physics through top-quark pair productions at μμ⁻ colliders. We calculate two CP-violating asymmetries for longitudinal and transverse beam polarizations, and study their dependence on √s and mH, the additional Higgs mass. Judging from their computed absolute values, we conclude that there are more chances to find non-standard effects in analyses using AL, the longitudinal asymmetry, than in those using AT, the transverse asymmetry

RETROPERITONEAL FIBROSARCOMA WITH DISTINCTIVE CHARACTERISTICS ON GROWTH P ATTERN AND FINDINGS IN DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING

A 47-year-old man with lumbago had been found to have a perirenal hematoma at the lower pole of the left kidney on CT. MR imaging also demonstrated a hematoma,8 X8X9αn in size. After 1-month observation, the mass had very rapidly increased in size, suggesting it to be a neoplasm. Consequent surgery resulted in noncurative tumor extirpation, because of invasion to the descending colon, left kidney and surrounding tissues. Histlogically, the tumor consisted of uniform spindle-shaped cells with interlacing solid and bundle forms, showing a herring-bone pattern. Immunohistochemical studies finally led to the diagnosis of fibrosarcoma with markedly high malignant potential. Additional therapy was not performed. Rapid local spread of the tumor was demonstrated when bowel obstruction developed 2 months later. The patient died of the disease 3 months after surgery. No distant metastasis was observed throughout the clinical course

Comparison of the Fixation Strengths of Screws between the Traditional Trajectory and the Single and Double Endplate Penetrating Screw Trajectories Using Osteoporotic Vertebral Body Models Based on the Finite Element Method

Study Design This is a finite element (FE) study. Purpose To compare the fixation strength of traditional trajectory (TT) and single and double endplate penetrating screw trajectories (SEPST/DEPST) to the osteoporotic vertebral body model based on the FE method. Overview of Literature SEPST/DEPST have been developed to enhance the fixation strength in patients with diffuse idiopathic hyperostosis (DISH). This technique was also applied to patients with osteoporosis. However, determining the superiority of SEPST/DEPST is difficult because of the heterogeneous patient backgrounds. Methods Twenty vertebrae (T12 and L1) from 10 patients with osteoporosis (two males and eight females; mean age, 74.7 years) were obtained to create the 10 FE models. First, a single screw was placed with TT and SEPST/DEPST, and the fixation strength was compared by axial pullout strength (POS) and multidirectional loading tests. Second, two screws were placed on the bilateral pedicles with TT and SEPST/DEPST, and the fixation force of the vertebrae in the constructs in flexion, extension, lateral flexion, and axial rotation was examined. Results SEPST and DEPST had 140% and 171% higher POS values than TT, respectively, and the DEPST result was statistically significant (p=0.007). The multidirectional fixation strength was significantly higher in DEPST and SEPST than in TT in the cranial, caudal, and medial directions (p<0.05) but not in the lateral direction (p=0.05). The vertebral fracture strength at the lower instrumented vertebra of the DEPST tended to be higher than that of TT. The vertebral motion angles in SEPST and DEPST were significantly smaller in lateral bending (p=0.02) and tended to be smaller in flexion and extension than in TT (p=0.13). Conclusions This study may provide useful information for spine surgeons in deciding whether to choose the SEPS or DEPS technique for augmenting fixation in osteoporotic vertebral fracture surgery

Idiopathic benign retroperitoneal cyst: a case report

Abstract

Introduction

Retroperitoneal cysts are uncommon, with an estimated incidence of 1/5750 to 1/250,000.

Case presentation

A male patient was admitted with an abdominal pain, jaundice and fever. Clinical examination and investigations confirmed an idiopathic benign retroperitoneal cyst. He underwent surgery and was discharged after making good recovery.

Conclusion

Retroperitoneal cysts are very rare, and most of the time they are discovered incidentally. Patients may be asymptomatic or present with abdominal pain, referred pain to the legs or weight loss. Imaging may help diagnose these lesions, but surgery is the keystone in confirming the diagnosis. This case is very rare and very educational as it highlights an unusual presentation of a benign retroperitoneal cyst. In our patient, the course of the disease was unique as the patient presented with jaundice.</p
