    Role of cobalt, iron, lead, manganese, mercury, platinum, selenium, and titanium in carcinogenesis.

    The possible carcinogenicity of cobalt, iron, lead, manganese, mercury, platinum, selenium, and titanium is reviewed, taking into account epidemiological data, the results of animal experimental studies, data on mutagenic effects and on other in vitro test systems. Of the great variety of occupations where exposure to one of these metals may occur, only haematite mining has been clearly shown to involve an increased human cancer risk. While the possibility that haematite might in some way act as a carcinogen has to be taken into consideration it is more likely that other carcinogens are responsible. Certain platinum coordination complexes are used in cancer chemotherapy, are mutagenic, and likely to be carcinogenic. Cobalt, its oxide and sulfide, certain lead salts, one organomanganese, and one organotitanium compound have been shown to have a limited carcinogenic effect in experimental animal studies, and except for titanium appear to be mutagenic. Certain mercury compounds are mutagenic but none have been shown to be carcinogenic. The presently available data are inadequate to assess the possible carcinogenicity of selenium compounds, but a few observations suggest that selenium may suppress the effect of other carcinogens administered to experimental animals and may even be associated with lower cancer mortality rates in man. Epidemiological observations are essential for the assessment of a human cancer risk, but the difficulty in collecting past exposure data in occupational groups and the complexity of multiple occupational exposures with changes over time, limits the usefulness of retrospective epidemiological studies

    Natural and sail-displaced doubly-symmetric Lagrange point orbits for polar coverage

    This paper proposes the use of doubly-symmetric, eight-shaped orbits in the circular restricted three-body problem for continuous coverage of the high-latitude regions of the Earth. These orbits, for a range of amplitudes, spend a large fraction of their period above either pole of the Earth. It is shown that they complement Sun-synchronous polar and highly eccentric Molniya orbits, and present a possible alternative to low thrust pole-sitter orbits. Both natural and solar-sail displaced orbits are considered. Continuation methods are described and used to generate families of these orbits. Starting from ballistic orbits, other families are created either by increasing the sail lightness number, varying the period or changing the sail attitude. Some representative orbits are then chosen to demonstrate the visibility of high-latitude regions throughout the year. A stability analysis is also performed, revealing that the orbits are unstable: it is found that for particular orbits, a solar sail can reduce their instability. A preliminary design of a linear quadratic regulator is presented as a solution to stabilize the system by using the solar sail only. Finally, invariant manifolds are exploited to identify orbits that present the opportunity of a ballistic transfer directly from low Earth orbit

    On the self-pinning character of synchro-Shockley dislocations in a Laves phase during strain rate cyclical compressions

    Strain rate cyclical tests in compression, between 1350 and 1500 degrees C, have been employed to study the self-pinning character of thermally activated synchro-Shockley dislocations in the C15 Cr2Nb Laves phase. An average minimum effective (pinning) stress was calculated to be necessary for their propagation. The dislocation velocity cannot respond instantly to the strain rate changes and requires variations in the mobile dislocation density because the synchro-Shockleys can be pinned if the cooperating motion of their two Shockley components is hindered.     Mortality of cadmium-exposed workers. A five-year update

    A cohort mortality study of cadmium-exposed workers initially followed to the end of 1979 has been updated for a further five years. The update has confirmed the findings of the original study with a significant excess risk from bronchitis related to intensity of exposure, although over the five-year period the excess mortality was no longer significant, a finding suggesting that the risk from bronchitis may now be declining in this cohort. In contrast, there is now a stronger indication of a excess risk from lung cancer related to intensity of exposure, significant for both the total and the five-year periods. There was again no increased risk from prostatic cancer, and from this and other studies it appears unlikely that cadmium, in the concentrations encountered in this and other recent studies, acts as a prostatic carcinogen. As in the initial study, there was no significant excess risk from hypertensive disease, nor any suggestion of an increased risk from cerebrovascular or renal disease

    The mechanical properties and the deformation microstructures of the C15 Laves phase Cr2Nb at high temperatures

    Compression tests between 1250 and 1550 degrees C and 10(-5) and 5 x 10(-3) s(-1) and transmission electron microscopy have been employed to investigate the high temperature mechanical properties and the deformation mechanisms of the C15 Cr2Nb Laves phase. The stress-peaks in the compression curves during yielding were explained using a mechanism similar to strain aging combined with a low initial density of mobile dislocations. The primary deformation mechanism is slip by extended dislocations with Burgers vector 1/2 <110 >, whereas twinning is more frequent at 10(-4) s(-1). Schmid factor analysis indicated that twinning is more probable in grains oriented so as to have two co-planar twinning systems with high and comparable resolved shear stresses. Twinning produced very anisotropic microstructures. This may be due to synchroshear: a self-pinning mechanism which requires co-operative motion of zonal dislocations. (c) 2006 Acta Materialia Inc.
