We show that if the action of a classical group GG on a set Ω\Omega of 11-spaces of its natural module is of genus at most two, then ∣Ω∣≤10,000|\Omega| \leq 10,000

    A Green's function preconditioner for the steady-state Navier-Stokes equations

    Get PDF
In this paper we present an efficient method for solving the sparse linear system of equations arising from the discretization of the linearised steady-state Navier-Stokes equations (also known as the Oseen equations). The solver is an iterative method of Krylov subspace type for which we devise a preconditioner based on Green's tensor for the Oseen operator. The preconditioner supersedes existing preconditioners for the Oseen problem in that it exhibits only a mild dependence on the viscosity (inverse Reynolds number) and, most importantly, improved performance with the size of the problem. This comes as no surprise, as preconditioners based on the continuous inverse are expected to perform better on discretizations which approximate well the continuous operator

"So, Tell Me What Users Want, What They Really, Really Want!"

Equating users' true needs and desires with behavioural measures of 'engagement' is problematic. However, good metrics of 'true preferences' are difficult to define, as cognitive biases make people's preferences change with context and exhibit inconsistencies over time. Yet, HCI research often glosses over the philosophical and theoretical depth of what it means to infer what users really want. In this paper, we present an alternative yet very real discussion of this issue, via a fictive dialogue between senior executives in a tech company aimed at helping people live the life they `really' want to live. How will the designers settle on a metric for their product to optimise

A preconditioner for the 3D Oseen equations

    Get PDF
We describe a preconditioner for the linearised incompressible Navier-Stokes equations (the Oseen equations) which requires as components only a preconditioner/solver for each of a discrete Laplacian and a discrete advection-diffusion operator. With this preconditioner, convergence of an iterative method such as GMRES is independent of the mesh size and depends only mildly on the viscosity parameter (the inverse Reynolds number). Thus when the component preconditioner/solvers are effective on their respective subproblems (as one expects with an appropriate multigrid cycle for instance) a fast Oseen solver results

Childrens Digital Practices: Case Studies Of Children Viewing And Representing With Digital Text

    Get PDF
This paper reports on case studies of four primary school children and their digital practices in Hong Kong. The study explored how the participating children view and represent through digital text in the context of their out-of-school technology use. Understanding how these practices extended into their English language classrooms was explicated based on emerging data. The study results identify six aspects of emerging skills acquired by the children. These skills were not extended into the childrens schoolwork a reflection on the emphasis on uni-modal language learning in the class setting. A detailed examination of the individual skills led to a set of recommendations for curriculum review, suitable pedagogical strategies and classroom learning resources that English Language Educators may utilize to facilitate development of viewing and representing skills through digital text

Benchmarking BIM Levels of Training and Education amongst Construction Management Practitioners

    Get PDF
UK Government created a strategic deadline of 2016 for the adoption and use of Level 2 BIM on all centrally procured projects. A shift from Computer Aided Design (CAD) to Building Information Modelling (BIM) has been driven by the need to improve the way that the industry delivers projects. It is believed that BIM better facilitates opportunities for collaboration and project enhancement than traditional project information management processes. It is also thought that by improving the quality of information, and adopting a more collaborative approach through a model- based design industry such advancements can be made. The originality of this research is in developing an understanding of the current-status of BIM training and education amongst construction management practitioners. The present research uses a quantitative survey approach to investigate the current-status of BIM awareness, understanding, use, and perceptions towards readiness for the 2016 mandate. Results highlight that approximately half of the sample have received some kind of education or training although there were higher levels of BIM awareness, use and understanding. Investigations also reveal that the majority of training and education received by practitioners is self-sourced, but amongst those respondents who have not received any education or training there are expectations that employers should provide these
