金沢大学工学部This paper addresses a thermal gas-flow simulation in gas circuit-breaker (GCB) chambers, introducing SF6 gas constants up to a pressure of 10 MPa and to a temperature of 30 000 K. In the simulation, moving parts, such as nozzle, movable arcing contact, and operating rod, are moved with the opening motion of GCB to see if different results are produced from the conventional simulation method, in which fixed parts in the real GCB are moved. As a result, as far as the pressure profile in the puffer chamber is concerned, it is confirmed that this simulation method can produce better results than the conventional method for the hybrid-puffer-type chamber. © 2005 IEEE

Anisotropic Optical Conductivity Accompanied by a Small Energy Gap in One-Dimensional Thermoelectric Telluride Ta4SiTe4

We investigated the optical properties of single crystals of one-dimensional telluride Ta4SiTe4, which shows high thermoelectric performance below room temperature. Optical conductivity estimated from reflectivity spectra indicates the presence of a small energy gap of 0.1-0.15 eV at the Fermi energy. At the lowest energy, optical conductivity along the Ta4SiTe4 chain is an order of magnitude higher than that perpendicular to this direction, reflecting the anisotropic electron conduction in Ta4SiTe4. These results indicate that coexistence of a very small band gap and anisotropic electron conduction is a promising strategy to develop a high-performance thermoelectric material for low temperature applications.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

The purpose of our research is to seek the user oriented distribution system of hearing aids and discuss the effective supply systems in assistive technology. Several tasks for the existing system are suggested by this research. 1. Establishment of certification of hearing aids fitting specialists. 2. Establishment of accreditation of specialist shops. 3. Public regulation of production and distribution and self standards by the hearing aids industry. 4. Additional development and reformation of hearing aids. 5. Reformation of public supply systems. A non profit organization should be established, which deals with hearing impairments and hearing aids as its priority, collects and analyzes information on hearing aids, and proposes a strategy about hearing impairments. It should be independent from any stake holders and should coordinate relative matters in a cross-sectoral manner.

BACKGROUND: Using a knock-out mouse model, it was shown that NETO1 is a critical component of the NMDAR complex, and that loss of Neto1 leads to impaired hippocampal long term potentiation and hippocampal-dependent learning and memory. Moreover, hemizygosity of NETO1 was shown to be associated with autistic-like behavior in humans. PURPOSE OF THE RESEARCH: We examined the association between schizophrenia and the neuropilin and tolloid-like 1 gene (NETO1). First, we selected eight single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the NETO1 locus, based on the Japanese schizophrenia genome wide association study (JGWAS) results and previously conducted association studies. These SNPs were genotyped in the replication sample comprised of 963 schizophrenic patients and 919 healthy controls. We also examined the effect of associated SNPs on scores in the Continuous Performance Test and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test Keio version (schizophrenic patients 107, healthy controls 104). RESULTS: There were no significant allele-wise and haplotype-wise associations in the replication analysis after Bonferroni correction. However, in meta-analysis (JGWAS and replication dataset) three association signals were observed (rs17795324: p = 0.028, rs8098760: p = 0.017, rs17086492: p = 0.003). These SNPs were followed up but we could not detect the allele-specific effect on cognitive performance measured by the Continuous performance test (CPT) and Wisconsin Card Sorting test (WCST). MAJOR CONCLUSIONS: We did not detect evidence for the association of NETO1 with schizophrenia in the Japanese population. Common variants within the NETO1 locus may not increase the genetic risk for schizophrenia in the Japanese population. Additionally, common variants investigated in the current study did not affect cognitive performance, as measured by the CPT and WCST

A case of refractory cutaneous polyarteritis nodosa in a patient with hepatitis B carrier status successfully treated with tumor necrosis factor alpha blockade

We describe a patient with refractory cutaneous polyarteritis nodosa (CPAN) with hepatitis B virus (HBV) carrier status who was successfully treated with tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) blockade, using etanercept, and we review 5 similar cases. We administered etanercept because of the occurrence of repeated flares despite aggressive therapy. C-reactive protein normalization; prednisolone dose-sparing; and absence of any adverse events, including HBV reactivation with nucleotide analogue administration, or renal dysfunction, have been achieved for 8 months. TNF-α blockade should be considered for intractable CPAN. © 2012 Japan College of Rheumatology. In Press → 出版者照会後に全文を公開

It is necessary to make clear some points of view before I begin a series of lectures on assistive technology in April 2005. The purposes of this paper are as follows: First, in spite of the fact that there are many laws and systems on assistive technology, the definitions and contents that depend on these laws are vague and so is the common idea of assistive technology. I try to define what assistive technology is. Second, it is usual that lectures on assistive technology are on theories of techniques and the lecturers are engineers or co-medical therapists. I\u27d like to discuss the need to have the aspect of social work included when we deal with assistive technology. Assistive technology is useful for people with various kinds of disabilities at each stage of their rehabilitation. Both demand and supply of assistive technology are essential in the practice of human welfare and culture. Therefore, the assistive technology issue has been regarded as important in lectures on human welfare and culture since 1998. Human welfare and culture is often thought of as a subculture of life and culture. Also, assistive technology is often seen as a subculture of tools or instruments, which are part of life skills. The last purpose of the paper is to focus on the aspect of disability studies on the matter of assistive technology. We used to use the term "technical aids" for "fukushiyougu" in Japanese, but recently "technical aids" frequently refers to "assistive technology" in Western countries because it involves systems. I would rather use "assistive technology" than "technical aids" in this paper

成人T細胞白血病リンパ腫(ATL)におけるゲノム情報と臨床情報を統合したリスクモデルを確立 --ATLの個別化医療を推進--. 京都大学プレスリリース. 2023-04-10.The prognosis of aggressive adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) is poor, and allogeneic hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is a curative treatment. To identify favorable prognostic patients after intensive chemotherapy, and who therefore might not require upfront allo-HSCT, we aimed to improve risk stratification of aggressive ATL patients aged <70 years. The clinical risk factors and genetic mutations were incorporated into risk modeling for overall survival (OS). We generated the m7-ATLPI, a clinicogenetic risk model for OS, that included the ATL prognostic index (PI) (ATL-PI) risk category, and non-silent mutations in seven genes, namely TP53, IRF4, RHOA, PRKCB, CARD11, CCR7, and GATA3. In the training cohort of 99 patients, the m7-ATLPI identified a low-, intermediate-, and high-risk group with 2-year OS of 100%, 43%, and 19%, respectively (hazard ratio [HR] 5.46, p < 0.0001). The m7-ATLPI achieved superior risk stratification compared to the current ATL-PI (C-index 0.92 vs. 0.85, respectively). In the validation cohort of 84 patients, the m7-ATLPI defined low-, intermediate-, and high-risk groups with a 2-year OS of 81%, 30%, and 0%, respectively (HR 2.33, p = 0.0094), and the model again outperformed the ATL-PI (C-index 0.72 vs. 0.70, respectively). The simplified m7-ATLPI, which is easier to use in clinical practice, achieved superior risk stratification compared to the ATL-PI, as did the original m7-ATLPI; the simplified version was calculated by summing the following: high-risk ATL-PI category (+10), low-risk ATL-PI category (−4), and non-silent mutations in TP53 (+4), IRF4 (+3), RHOA (+1), PRKCB (+1), CARD11 (+0.5), CCR7 (−2), and GATA3 (−3)

The 2nd DBCLS BioHackathon: interoperable bioinformatics Web services for integrated applications

Abstract

Background

The interaction between biological researchers and the bioinformatics tools they use is still hampered by incomplete interoperability between such tools. To ensure interoperability initiatives are effectively deployed, end-user applications need to be aware of, and support, best practices and standards. Here, we report on an initiative in which software developers and genome biologists came together to explore and raise awareness of these issues: BioHackathon 2009.

Results

Developers in attendance came from diverse backgrounds, with experts in Web services, workflow tools, text mining and visualization. Genome biologists provided expertise and exemplar data from the domains of sequence and pathway analysis and glyco-informatics. One goal of the meeting was to evaluate the ability to address real world use cases in these domains using the tools that the developers represented. This resulted in i) a workflow to annotate 100,000 sequences from an invertebrate species; ii) an integrated system for analysis of the transcription factor binding sites (TFBSs) enriched based on differential gene expression data obtained from a microarray experiment; iii) a workflow to enumerate putative physical protein interactions among enzymes in a metabolic pathway using protein structure data; iv) a workflow to analyze glyco-gene-related diseases by searching for human homologs of glyco-genes in other species, such as fruit flies, and retrieving their phenotype-annotated SNPs.

Conclusions

Beyond deriving prototype solutions for each use-case, a second major purpose of the BioHackathon was to highlight areas of insufficiency. We discuss the issues raised by our exploration of the problem/solution space, concluding that there are still problems with the way Web services are modeled and annotated, including: i) the absence of several useful data or analysis functions in the Web service "space"; ii) the lack of documentation of methods; iii) lack of compliance with the SOAP/WSDL specification among and between various programming-language libraries; and iv) incompatibility between various bioinformatics data formats. Although it was still difficult to solve real world problems posed to the developers by the biological researchers in attendance because of these problems, we note the promise of addressing these issues within a semantic framework.</p
