Spin Chains with Periodic Array of Impurities
We investigate the spin chain model composed of periodic array of two kinds
of spins and , which allows us to study the spin chains with
impurities as well as the alternating spin chains in a unified fashion. By
using the Lieb-Shultz-Mattis theorem, we first study the model rigorously, and
then by mapping it to the non-linear sigma model, we extensively investigate
low-energy properties with particular emphasis on the competition between the
massive and massless phases.Comment: 5 pages, revtex, To appear in PR
Impact of workplace smoke-free policy on secondhand smoke exposure from cigarettes and exposure to secondhand heated tobacco product aerosol during COVID-19 pandemic in Japan: the JACSIS 2020 study
[Objectives] Promoting smoke-free policies is a key intervention for reducing secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure. During the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan, many indoor smoking spaces in workplaces were closed. This study aimed to reveal the association between a workplace smoke-free policy and SHS exposure among non-smoking employees, distinguishing between SHS exposure from cigarettes and exposure to secondhand heated tobacco product (HTP) aerosol, which have recently become popular in Japan. [Design and setting] We used data from the Japan COVID-19 and Society Internet Survey conducted in August–September 2020. [Participants] Among the 25 482 eligible respondents, 8196 non-smoking employees were analysed. [Primary outcome measure] Multivariable logistic regression models were used to examine the impact of smoke-free policies in the workplace. [Results] Compared with complete smoking bans, the ORs and 95% CIs for workplace SHS exposure at least once a week from cigarettes were 2.06 (95% CI: 1.60 to 2.65) for partial bans with no longer available smoking spaces, 1.92 (95% CI: 1.63 to 2.25) for partial smoking bans with still available smoking spaces and 5.33 (95% CI: 4.10 to 6.93) for no smoking bans. The corresponding ORs and 95% CIs for exposure to secondhand HTP aerosol were 4.15 (95% CI: 3.22 to 5.34), 2.24 (95% CI: 1.86 to 2.71) and 3.88 (95% CI: 2.86 to 5.26), respectively. [Conclusions] The effect of partial bans was limited, and temporary closure of smoking spaces might contribute to increased exposure to secondhand HTP aerosol. Complete smoking bans in the workplace were reaffirmed to be the best way to reduce SHS exposure from cigarettes and exposure to secondhand HTP aerosol

The patient was a 15-year 6-month female, and her chief complaint was severe nasomaxillary hypoplasia with anterior crossbite. After extraction of bilateral upper and lower third molars, the preoperative orthodontic treatment was initiated at 15-year and 7-month old. After 10-month orthodontic treatment, she received a surgery of intraoral LeFort II midfacial advancement using a piezoelectric braze. The naso-maxillary LeFort II segment was placed forward and downward by 8.0 mm using a Rigid External Distractor (RED) system, and internal rigid fixation was performed. For the mandible, the bilateral intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy was also performed, resulting in 6.0 mm mandibular setback. After 6-month of postoperative treatment, multi-bracket appliances were removed. At 7-month after surgery, the satisfactory facial profile and acceptable occlusion were obtained
Exact solution and spectral flow for twisted Haldane-Shastry model
The exact solution of the spin chain model with exchange is found for
twisted boundary conditions. The spectrum thus obtained can be reproduced by
the asymptotic Bethe ansatz. The spectral flow of each eigenstate is determined
exactly as a function of the twist angle. We find that the period for
the ground state nicely fits in with the notion of fractional exclusion
statistics.Comment: 4 pages, revtex, 1 figure available on request, to appear in PR
Split luciferase complementation assay to detect regulated protein-protein interactions in rice protoplasts in a large-scale format
© 2014 Fujikawa et al. Background: The rice interactome, in which a network of protein-protein interactions has been elucidated in rice, is a useful resource to identify functional modules of rice signal transduction pathways. Protein-protein interactions occur in cells in two ways, constitutive and regulative. While a yeast-based high-throughput method has been widely used to identify the constitutive interactions, a method to detect the regulated interactions is rarely developed for a large-scale analysis. Results: A split luciferase complementation assay was applied to detect the regulated interactions in rice. A transformation method of rice protoplasts in a 96-well plate was first established for a large-scale analysis. In addition, an antibody that specifically recognizes a carboxyl-terminal fragment of Renilla luciferase was newly developed. A pair of antibodies that recognize amino- and carboxyl- terminal fragments of Renilla luciferase, respectively, was then used to monitor quality and quantity of interacting recombinant-proteins accumulated in the cells. For a proof-of-concept, the method was applied to detect the gibberellin-dependent interaction between GIBBERELLIN INSENSITIVE DWARF1 and SLENDER RICE 1. Conclusions: A method to detect regulated protein-protein interactions was developed towards establishment of the rice interactome
Haldane's Fractional Exclusion Statistics for Multicomponent Systems
The idea of fractional exclusion statistics proposed by Haldane is applied to
systems with internal degrees of freedom, and its thermodynamics is examined.
In case of one dimension, various bulk quantities calculated show that the
critical behavior of such systems can be described by conformal field
theories and conformal weights are completely characterized by statistical
interactions. It is also found that statistical interactions have intimate
relationship with a topological order matrix in Chern-Simons theory for the
fractional quantum Hall effect.Comment: 12 pages, Revtex, preprint YITP/K-107
The prevalence of insomnia and restless legs syndrome among Japanese outpatients with rheumatic disease: A cross-sectional study
The prevalence of symptomatic insomnia and the prevalence of restless legs syndrome (RLS) are known to be higher among patients with rheumatic diseases compared to the general population. The prevalences of insomnia and RLS reported in a questionnaire by Japanese patients with rheumatic diseases at an outpatient clinic were analyzed herein. The association between the patients\u27 disease activity and their sleep quality was analyzed. Of 121 rheumatic disease patients, 70 were enrolled. The median (interquartile range) age at enrollment was 62.0 (47.8-68.0) years. There were 58 women (82.9%) and 12 men (17.1%), and 43 patients (61.4%) with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), nine (12.9%) with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and 18 (25.7%) with other rheumatic diseases. Twenty patients (28.6%) had one or more moderate-to-severe insomnia symptoms, and 10 (14.3%) were diagnosed with RLS. Among the patients with RA, the swollen joint count based on a 28-joint assessment (SJC28) was significantly higher in the insomnia group (n = 13) compared to the non-insomnia group (n = 30) (p = 0.006). A classification and regression tree (CART) analysis showed that the cut-off points of ?3 mg/day prednisolone (PSL) treatment and <16.54% as the transferrin saturation (TSAT) value would best predict RLS in rheumatic disease. Patients with rheumatic disease had a high prevalence of symptomatic insomnia and RLS. A higher dose of PSL and lower TSAT were associated with the occurrence of RLS. Copyright
