    Stable Invariant Models via Koopman Spectra

    Weight-tied models have attracted attention in the modern development of neural networks. The deep equilibrium model (DEQ) represents infinitely deep neural networks with weight-tying, and recent studies have shown the potential of this type of approach. DEQs are needed to iteratively solve root-finding problems in training and are built on the assumption that the underlying dynamics determined by the models converge to a fixed point. In this paper, we present the stable invariant model (SIM), a new class of deep models that in principle approximates DEQs under stability and extends the dynamics to more general ones converging to an invariant set (not restricted in a fixed point). The key ingredient in deriving SIMs is a representation of the dynamics with the spectra of the Koopman and Perron--Frobenius operators. This perspective approximately reveals stable dynamics with DEQs and then derives two variants of SIMs. We also propose an implementation of SIMs that can be learned in the same way as feedforward models. We illustrate the empirical performance of SIMs with experiments and demonstrate that SIMs achieve comparative or superior performance against DEQs in several learning tasks

    CHANGE OF DIRECTION MOTION DURING THE DEFENSIVE PHASE IN SOCCER PLAYERS

    The purpose of the this study was to the change of direction (COD) movement in the backward direction during the defensive phase. Thirteen male soccer players performed the reactive agility test (RAT) and sprint running. Analysis classified the players to two groups according to the RAT time. There was no significant difference in sprint times, but RAT of the fast group was significantly faster than that of the slow group. Before and after COD of RAT, the fast group had made a deceleration quickly by high-step frequency. In the COD movement, the fast group performed the movement with their body tilted backward while lowering their center of gravity with the hip of the COD foot bent before COD and smaller knee flexion displacement during COD support phase. These findings seem to be a basic knowledge for evaluation and training of COD in soccer

    Sodium temperature lidar based on injection seeded Nd:YAG pulse lasers using a sum-frequency generation technique

    We report on a sodium (Na) temperature lidar based on two injection seeded Nd:YAG pulse lasers using single-pass sum-frequency generation. The laser power at 589 nm is 400 mW (40 mJ per pulse at a repetition rate of 10 Hz) and the pulse width is 22 nsec FWHM. The narrowband laser tuned to the Doppler broadened Na D(2) spectrum enables us to measure the temperature of the mesopause region (80-115 km). This solid-state transportable system demonstrated high performance and capability at Syowa Station in Antarctica for 3 years and at Uji in Japan for an additional year without any major operational troubles.     Quantitative Evaluation of Osteocyte Morphology and Bone Anisotropic Extracellular Matrix in Rat Femur

    Osteocytes are believed to play a crucial role in mechanosensation and mechanotransduction which are important for maintenance of mechanical integrity of bone. Recent investigations have revealed that the preferential orientation of bone extracellular matrix (ECM) mainly composed of collagen fibers and apatite crystallites is one of the important determinants of bone mechanical integrity. However, the relationship between osteocytes and ECM orientation remains unclear. In this study, the association between ECM orientation and anisotropy in the osteocyte lacuno-canalicular system, which is thought to be optimized along with the mechanical stimuli, was investigated using male rat femur. The degree of ECM orientation along the femur longitudinal axis was significantly and positively correlated with the anisotropic features of the osteocyte lacunae and canaliculi. At the femur middiaphysis, there are the osteocytes with lacunae that highly aligned along the bone long axis (principal stress direction) and canaliculi that preferentially extended perpendicular to the bone long axis, and the highest degree of apatite c-axis orientation along the bone long axis was shown. Based on these data, we propose a model in which osteocytes can change their lacuno-canalicular architecture depending on the mechanical environment so that they can become more susceptible to mechanical stimuli via fluid flow in the canalicular channel.Ishimoto T., Kawahara K., Matsugaki A., et al.     A Case of Bilateral Adrenal and Pleural Metastases from Prostate Cancer

    Our case was 65 years old. At check-up, a high PSA level of 515 ng/ml was observed, the patient was diagnosed with having clinical stage D prostate cancer and a Maximum Androgen Blockade (MAB therapy) was started. In response to the exacerbated prostate cancer, we started a therapy involving the administration of 8 mg/kg body weight of dexamethasone and 55 mg/m2 of docetaxel every 3 weeks. After completing 8 courses, an enlargement of the bilateral adrenal tumor was observed, and after completing 12 courses, a pleural tumor was discovered and the PSA level was also increased. The patient was therefore diagnosed with having bilateral adrenal metastasis and pleural metastasis of prostate cancer through diagnostic imaging. So far, there have been no reports of multiple occurrences of prostate cancer in the adrenal glands and the pleura, thus making this case the first such case

The reduced masses of the carriers and the exciton binding energies obtained from these data are clearly influenced by polaron formation. We analyze the field-dependent polaronic and excitonic properties, and show that they can be quantitatively reproduced by the Fröhlich large polaron model

    Sodium temperature lidar observation at Syowa Station: Summary of three-year observations and unusually high temperature in 2002

    Total 223 nights (2002 hours) of temperature measurement in the mesopause region (80-105 km) was successfully done in wintertime at Syowa Station (69ºS, 39ºE) starting from 2000 through 2002. Monthly mean temperatures were calculated using nightly mean temperatures and year-to-year variation was examined. The monthly temperature of 2002 shows unusually higher (25 K and 20 K) in June and July compared with previous 2 years. Variations of individual nights showed the temperatures at 80 km, 85 km and 110 km are in good agreement among three years through the observation period. The temperature of 2002 began to increase from the middle of May and was back to normal around the end of July in the limited altitude range of 90-105 km

    First mesopause temperature measurements using sodium lidar observations in the Antarctic region

    The mesopause temperature structure was observed using a sodium temperature lidar system at Syowa Station (69°00\u27 S, 39°35\u27 E), beginning in February 2000. The laser transmitter was newly developed and included two injection-seeded Nd: YAG lasers. Regular observations were performed using the two-frequency technique as demonstrated by C.Y. She et al. (Geophys. Res. Lett., 17, 929, 1990), with a spatial resolution of about 1 km and a temporal resolution of 6 min. The temperature structures of the 85km to 105km region of the upper atmosphere were measured by Na D_2 Doppler profile-fitting as well as the two-frequency technique. Temperatures derived from the two techniques agreed well and were consistent with the MSIS 90 model temperature structure. Night-time temperature variations over a 15-hour period were measured in May 2000. A large temperature fluctuation with an interval of about 4 hours, and an amplitude of 60 K (probably caused by gravity waves) was observed. From the average night temperature profile, the mesopause was determined to be located at 102km, and have a temperature of 180K. These values are similar to winter values observed in the northern hemisphere
