    Carcinosarcoma of the Uterine Corpus with Alpha-Fetoprotein-Producing Hepatoid Adenocarcinoma: A Report of Two Cases

    We report two cases of uterine carcinosarcoma associated with alpha-fetoprotein (AFP)-producing hepatoid adenocarcinoma. Samples were obtained from two women aged 63 and 82 years. Serum AFP levels of the two samples were 10,131 and 401 ng/ml, respectively. Histologically, in both cases the tumor cells were composed of hepatoid adenocarcinoma component and sarcoma component including rhabdomyosarcoma. Immunohistochemical analyses revealed that AFP was expressed in the cytoplasm of the carcinomatous component. After surgery, the patients received six courses of carboplatin/paclitaxel chemotherapy, and the serum levels of AFP decreased to normal range. The first patient is alive and well at the 2-year follow-up, while the second patient died of disease 1 year after initial operative treatment. This is, to our knowledge, the second report of carcinosarcoma of the uterine corpus with AFP-producing hepatoid adenocarcinoma, as proven by immunohistochemical analyses

    Thoracic endovascular aneurysm repair in Japan: Experience with fenestrated stent grafts in the treatment of distal arch aneurysms

    ObjectivesIn the West, stent grafts for endovascular repair of thoracic aortic aneurysms have been commercially available for several years, whereas in Japan, a manufactured stent graft was not approved for this application until March 2008. Nevertheless, endovascular thoracic intervention began to be performed in Japan in the early 1990s, with homemade devices used in most cases. Many researchers have continued to develop homemade devices. We have participated in joint design and assessment efforts with a stent graft manufacturer, focusing primarily on fenestrated stent grafts used in repairs at the distal arch, a site especially prone to aneurysm.MethodsFrom 1995 to February 2008, we performed about 1100 endovascular procedures to treat thoracic aortic aneurysms and 682 cases were performed at Tokyo Medical University. In 435 out of 682 the aneurysm was located in the area from the distal arch to the proximal descending aorta. Fenestrated stent grafts were inserted in 288 cases. Computed tomography scans were performed at 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively and annually thereafter.ResultsThe initial success rate in the entire series was 95.2%. Complications included 26 cerebral infarctions (3.8%), six of which (0.9%) resulted in serious paralysis and changes in consciousness. Among patients who received fenestrated stent grafts, paraplegia occurred in 2.6%, aortic injury in 1.2%, and iliofemoral artery injury in 6.0%. No complications resulted from occlusion of aortic arch branches. At ≥2 years after intervention, aneurysm diameter was reduced in 62% of patients, 33% had no change, and 5% had a diameter enlargement. The stent graft complication rate during follow-up was 8.4%, the device fracture rate was 1.4%, and the device migration rate was 7%. The 5-year survival rate was 62.4%, with follow-up in 96.8% of the patients.ConclusionEndovascular repair has promising results in the descending thoracic aortic region, although some stent grafts and their delivery systems can still be improved. Additional commercial developments and available stent grafts designed for use in the distal arch are urgently needed

    Photopolymerization with high-order Bessel light beams

Self-trapping and self-focusing of propagation-invariant light beams in a photopolymer allow the fabrication of extended helical microfibers with a length scale of a centimeter, which is more than an order of magnitude larger than the propagation distance of the Bessel light beams. We show the evolution of microfibers rotating at a rate proportional to the incident optical power, while the periodicity of the helical structures remains constant, irrespective of the laser power. This suggests that optical momentum transfer plays a predominant role in the growth and rotation of such fiber structures.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Absence of Tc-Pinning Phenomenon Under High Pressure in High-Entropy REO0.5F0.5BiS2 Layered Superconductor

    Recently, robustness of superconductivity (transition temperature, Tc) under high pressures has been observed in high-entropy alloy (HEA), bcc-type Ti-Zr-Hf-Nb-Ta, and HEA-type compounds (Ag,In,Sn,Pb,Bi)Te with a NaCl-type structure. Since those materials have three-dimensional crystal structure, investigation on the pressure dependence of Tc of low-dimensional materials is needed to understand the phenomena. Here, we investigated the superconducting properties and the crystal structure of BiS2-based layered system REO0.5F0.5BiS2. Although the robustness of Tc was induced in MTe with increasing M-site configurational entropy, the increase in RE-site configurational entropy does not induce robustness of Tc under high pressures in REO0.5F0.5BiS2. The crystal structure of HEA-type REO0.5F0.5BiS2 was confirmed as monoclinic P21/m, which is the same space group as the zero-entropy counterpart LaO0.5F0.5BiS2. The results suggest that an increase in configurational entropy at blocking layers do not affect crystal structure and superconducting properties under high pressures in the BiS2-based layered system.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure

    A new scanning system using a NaI(Tl) scintillation survey meter, copper slit and drive-unit has been developed for quality control of radioactive seeds. Radioactive seed implants, also called brachytherapy, are widely used modality in the treatment of early stage prostate cancers. Seeds containing the iodine-125 are most commonly used for permanent implant prostate brachytherapy. These seeds are commercially available and delivered in a sterile environment in the form of packaged cartridge. It is impractical to re-sterilize and re-load seeds after calibration. This paper describes a new method to calibrate all seeds in the seed cartridge in a sterile package

    Pressure-induced volumetric negative thermal expansion in CoZr2 superconductor

    We investigate the thermal expansion and superconducting properties of a CuAl2-type (tetragonal) superconductor CoZr2 under high pressures. We perform high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction in a pressure range of 2.9 GPa < P < 10.4 GPa and discover that CoZr2 exhibits volumetric negative thermal expansion under high pressures. Although the uniaxial positive thermal expansion (PTE) along the a-axis is observed under ambient pressure, that is suppressed by pressure, while the large uniaxial negative thermal expansion (NTE) along the c-axis is maintained under the pressure regime. As a result of a combination of the suppressed uniaxial PTE along the a-axis and uniaxial NTE along the c-axis, volumetric negative thermal expansion is achieved under high pressure in CoZr2. The mechanisms of volumetric NTE would be based on the flexible crystal structure caused by the soft Co-Co bond as seen in the iso-structural compound FeZr2, which exhibits uniaxial NTE along the c-axis. We also perform high-pressure electrical resistance measurements of CoZr2 to confirm the presence of superconductivity under the examined pressure regime in the range of 0.03 GPa < P < 41.9 GPa. We confirm the presence of superconductivity under all pressures and observe dome-like shape pressure dependence of superconducting transition temperature. Because of the coexistence of two phenomena, which are volumetric NTE and superconductivity, in CoZr2 under high pressure, the coexistence would be achievable under ambient pressure by tuning chemical compositions after our present observation.Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures, supporting informatio

    Hyper-luminous Dust Obscured Galaxies discovered by the Hyper Suprime-Cam on Subaru and WISE

    We present the photometric properties of a sample of infrared (IR) bright dust obscured galaxies (DOGs). Combining wide and deep optical images obtained with the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) on the Subaru Telescope and all-sky mid-IR (MIR) images taken with Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), we discovered 48 DOGs with iKs>1.2i - K_\mathrm{s} > 1.2 and i[22]>7.0i - [22] > 7.0, where ii, KsK_\mathrm{s}, and [22] represent AB magnitude in the ii-band, KsK_\mathrm{s}-band, and 22 μ\mum, respectively, in the GAMA 14hr field (\sim 9 deg2^2). Among these objects, 31 (\sim 65 %) show power-law spectral energy distributions (SEDs) in the near-IR (NIR) and MIR regime, while the remainder show a NIR bump in their SEDs. Assuming that the redshift distribution for our DOGs sample is Gaussian, with mean and sigma zz = 1.99 ±\pm 0.45, we calculated their total IR luminosity using an empirical relation between 22 μ\mum luminosity and total IR luminosity. The average value of the total IR luminosity is (3.5 ±\pm 1.1) ×\times 101310^{13} L_{\odot}, which classifies them as hyper-luminous infrared galaxies (HyLIRGs). We also derived the total IR luminosity function (LF) and IR luminosity density (LD) for a flux-limited subsample of 18 DOGs with 22 μ\mum flux greater than 3.0 mJy and with ii-band magnitude brighter than 24 AB magnitude. The derived space density for this subsample is log ϕ\phi = -6.59 ±\pm 0.11 [Mpc3^{-3}]. The IR LF for DOGs including data obtained from the literature is well fitted by a double-power law. The derived lower limit for the IR LD for our sample is ρIR\rho_{\mathrm{IR}} \sim 3.8 ×\times 107^7 [L_{\odot} Mpc3^{-3}] and its contributions to the total IR LD, IR LD of all ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs), and that of all DOGs are >> 3 %, >> 9 %, and >> 15 %, respectively.Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures, and 3 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ (Subaru special issue
